Federer VS. Hass VS. Wawrinka

I know it is hard to do without comparing all of their games overall, but who do you think has the best backhand? Assume that everyone is in their prime. Fed at number 1, Hass at number 2, and Stan at number 9.

Overall bh? Federer has a way better slice than both imo. But I think Wawrinka's topspin bh is one of the best in the game. I don't really think Haas' topspin bh is all that much better than Federer's. Pretty close there. Maybe I am just thinking that from watching a few of Haas' more recent matches which weren't as pretty as they were a few years ago.

If your talking about comparing their backhands at there best Fed's is number 1 for sure, just watch the match against Blake at the TMC 06' final, best one handed bh display ever, then im not sure between Wawrinka and Haas, i think Wawrinka might just take it because he has the ability more to hit a winner of that side unlike haas where its not quite as powerful.

On low bouncing surfaces such as London indoors and grass, Federer's BH is more versatile and his slice is just NASTY!

On hardcourt and clay where the bounces are higher, Wawrinka for sure. His topspin 1HBH has to be the GOAT. The guy can hit winners from everywhere on the court with his topspin 1HBH.

Back in 02-03 Haas had the best 1hBH in the game. Andrei Pavel was a close second, but because of his ranking, did not get as much notice. Watch haas against safin in the 02 Aussie open. his BH was deadly. His slice was good as well.

That's quite funny, just recently I was watching the match you mentioned as well as a few other Haas matches from that period. His bh dtl in particular was just such an excellent shot. He would hit it so accurately and with a ton of pace, not much that could be done against that shot.

At the end of the day, deciding who has the best 1HBH among Fed, Waw, Haas, Gasq, Almag, Guga, Henin, etc. is like choosing which is the best exotic car...Ferrari, Lambo, Aston, Bentley, RR, etc. I'd take ANY of them over mine. :(

And no-one has yet mentioned the backhand return, a department where Federer smokes both of these other guys.

I thought more people would go with stan. When he goes down the line it is so nice. Most people just go with fed though because of his overall GOATness. Fed's bh gets picked on with high topspin shots, while stan just rips it.

Stan's has more snap like a Roddick serve, Tommy's form arguably looks the best if not also somewhat mechanical, Roger's--if you include his slice--is probably the most versatile.

Just backhand only? Both Haas and Wawrinka has great backhands. Fed's backhand is weaker compared to these two. Forehand? Federer is far far better than both. Backhand only? Fed isn't even top 10. Ask any pro and they'll say the same. No pundits or pros ever say Federer's backhand is a strength of his game. It's his combination of Forehand, Movement, and decent serve that really make up his game. Wawrinka, on the other hand, has the backhand as his strength. If Federer has Wawrinka backhand, he would have owned Nadal easily since Nadal will never be able to pick on his relatively weaker backhand.

even bh overall is hard to say

i still think haas has the best and most beautiful DTL. but his CC is not all that special. his slice is pretty good too

stan probably has the most powerful 1hander and is very consistent with the topspin shot. his slice is not all that good tho same with variety, defensive capabilities, yada yada. his only real plus is the pace i guess.

gasquets is pretty good in all departments but not the best in any of them either. in every possible subdepartment you could think of there is at least 1 among the others who tops him. its the paladin among the bhs

federers is probably the least consistent out of the 4. the topspin bh is quite prone to error and he cant match stans overall pace or haas DTL precision most of the time.
but its obviously the most versatile by far. the slice is fantastic, defensive capabilities are amazing too (if the ball isnt too high) and the angles are ridiculous. and when he does get to rip it it can hit almost as hard as stans. the major drawback for fed is really just the high balls, that all 1handers struggle with but fed a bit more than stan or gasquet.

id say fed wins overall tho. variety weighs heavy

Blake had no problem humiliating Nadal's top spin. Federer's backhand is just not solid enough to deal with Nadal's cross court top spin. There is no way a player with weak backhand can be considered having the best backhand. Just because Federer is among the GOAT candidate doesn't make his backhand the GOAT candidate as well, or even close to it.

Topspin - I would pick either Stan's or Fed's.

Power - Gasquet or Stan's.

Slice - Federer.

Variety - Federer. Fed has probably the best variation on that wing ranging from low skidding slices to high topspin kickers.

But I probably enjoy the most Wawrinka's backhand... :)

the fact that the bh is most likely federers weakest shot is more due to the other shots being so ridiculously amazing rather than the bh being god-awful.

hardly anyone else on tour would consider their backhand a weakness if it worked like federers. we are talking about all parts of the bh here not just the aggressive topspin shots

Sorry, I don't see a Ferrer, a Murray, or a Djokovic going anywhere with Federer's backhand. Many other pros have superior backhand to Federer's, and they WILL consider their backhand a weakness if they have a shanky backhand like Federer's...

I don't think I've ever seen anything like Gasquet's 1 handed backhand
in my following of professional tennis for last 25 years.

Federer's backhand has more varieties but he often seems to get somewhat
defensive with his backhand.

Gasquet hardly takes defensive stance or slices it. He likes to push the limit of
one handed backhand.

Definite fun to watch his backhands but sometime wonder whether Gasquet
really wants to win a match or just wanna have fun with his backhand. ha ha ha

would you guys think that this generation of listed players' bhs would kill pete s. bh?

Pete wouldn't let anyone attack his backhand. You couldn't - even if you returned his 135mph serve he'd be at the net, from the baseline he'd mask that weaker 1H BH by trying to dictate with the FH.

Guga's was better than any one hander today but from your list Stan gets the nod... He lacks other things like Fed's court coverage, variety, serving etc.. but if Fed could hit with Stan's style topspin BH grip Nadal's x-court would no longer be an issue. (it does take a bit more prep though so there is a problem if you don't have a good slice too)

PS since I hit this kind of extreme eastern BH I can attest ripping scary 1HBH's like Stan's is a ton of fun.... can be good for returns too.
