Spadea versus Federer
Who wins? The InVINCEable Spade or the (FedEx) Swiss Maestro?

Let's assume they're playing with graphite, on clay and both having a "good day" on the court. I personally think Federer wins routinely.

I know the H2H is 1-2 in favor of Federer. But that is not very revealing, because Fed was SO YOUNG. (Personally, I think Fed is twice as good as VS, as the numbers indicate.)

There is no doubt Federer wins most of the time unless the prospect of facing the InVINCEsible one scares Roger. I know I would be scared.

Watching the Vincester play the Bryan Brothers in doubles at the French a few years back, looks like it was 2007 upon further review, my wife and I still talk about his high level strategy we had the fortune of overhearing. Bare in mind that his showing up 15 minutes late to the court was a great way to get in the heads of the #1 doubles team as well. This guy is a consummate professional.

Vince and his pal were getting routinely worked when Vince proposed to his partner before serving to Mike: "I don't know what else to do, should I just ace him?"

You can guess what happened on that next serve and find the results of the match as well. Fed may well be in trouble as the playa spadea rolls out and aces ya.

So we now know for a fact that the InVINCEsible one can ace players at will. Forget about Goran. Forget about Sampras. Forget about Pancho Gonzalez. Forget about Roddick. Forget about Karlovic. It's Aces Spadea. The greatest server of all time.

I'm scared. We saw the GOAT in Spadea and didn't know it. How could we miss it??

I'm fairly certain the Spadea return puts Agassi to shame. Can someone find some evidence for me?

As for all that forget stuff, sorry, I can't make out what you wrote. I don't understand French.

About the OP's question, this is how I see a Spadea/Federer matchup.

We know for a fact that Spadea got the best of Rod Laver in the 1960s -- including a few previously unknown wins over Laver in the great '69 year! (This was all discovered right here on this board, by those who are really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really interested in finding out these types of facts.)

And you can't do better than slaying The Rocket.

So, I've got to go with Vince on this one.

Spadea over Federer in four.

(Sorry, Rog. I can back you up against Pete, but not against this guy.)

What, no poll?

Polls are useless Chopin. There is no need for a poll when we know the InVINCEsible one is the GOAT. It's like having a poll to find out if one plus one equals two. We already know it. Clearly THE GREAT VINCE is the GOAT.

OK, time to handicap Vince: He has to play both Fed and Laver (2006 and 1967 versions) alone.

The Spade gets only a wooden racquet with crummy nylon strings. FedEx and the Rocket get graphite and poly-gut hybrids. They get to hit into the doubles alleys of a fast grass court, he has to hit into a singles clay court. They get two serves, he gets one (now that we know he can ace at will).

They get spotted 3 games per set.

. . . maybe this will even the odds and keep it close, but The InVINCEable One still wins, mais bien sur.

Spadea: I've got Fernando Verdasco.

Spadea: Nahhh, Verdasco Tabasco...

I believe the ATP has his AWESOMENESS as being born in 1974 but there are rumors he played in the 1920's. Vince may have been disguised as Henri Cochet starting in the third set at 5-1 down against Bill Tilden in the 1927 Wimbledon. He took over for Henri when Henri was being destroyed by Tilden. Of course with Spadea (as Henri Cochet) playing, Cochet aka Spadea won 17 consecutive points to win the set and toyed with Tilden in the next two sets, embarrassing Tilden. Of course Spadea won the 1927 Wimbledon in dramatic fashion over Jean Borotra.

Another rumor is that Spadea was disguised as Ellsworth Vines when he served that legendary serve that Austin claimed he could not see to win Wimbledon in the early 1930's.

You can't handicap the InVINCEsible one. He could beat Laver and Federer holding the racquet with his feet and blindfolded. He has mysterious powers of racquet and ball control. It may be supernatural. I believe he may be the first Jedi of Tennis.

Its talk about a Spadea movie, with Vince van Patten playing the lead role.

It's a sort after role. Brad Pitt is going for it but he's too ugly compared to the InVINCEsible one.

Van Patten has the inside track because he plays tennis and has the name Vince. Of course Spadea may just play himself. That would my choice of course.

I believe so but Vince stopped teaching Yoda because he didn't like the way Yoda spoke. Bad grammar according to Vince.

Look at that, Federer had no reply for that. Vince made him look foolish.

This thread is a great tribute to Club Chopin and a great deal of fun to read. The only thing missing is a poll, but I'd award this thread an A- regardless. In fact, I'd like to make hoodjem Chopin's Gold Star Poster of the Week.

The H2H sample is too small to draw meaningful conclusions. Federer has a slightly better forehand, but much weaker backhand. Small edge to Federer on serve and maybe dinky volleys, but Spadea has a much better court sense and overhead. It's about even.

NO, NO, NO!!! Just the intimidation factor of THE VINCE would make Federer collapse. Nadal has made Federer cry so what would the InVINCEcible one do to Federer. How dare you call it even? And you forget of the rapping genius of the Spadea.

Excellent thread. Let's not forget that Spadea is an ATP champion. Now, looking at the draw--it's clear to me that this is a harder draw than many of Laver's Australian "slams." Does anyone see Laver getting past a big server like Roddick on a hardcourt? I don't. Can you imagine that match-up even: Rod Laver against a guy serving bombs and ripping his forehand? I can't imagine Laver being able to do much. But guess who did do something? The Italian Gladiator: Spadea.

R32 Thomas Johansson (SWE) 231 W 6-4, 6-4 Stats

What do you mean as Laver´s Australian slams? he won 2 , in 62 and 69.In 69 beat Fraser,Stolle.Roche and Gimeno...and any of those are far ahead of Roddick in my big champions list...so, Laver beat Roddick x 8 in just one GS event (AO)

Fed's first victory over Spadea was also in 1999--so I guess we cannot count that one either.

When do we get to call him "Grandpa Fed" (so we don't have to really count those, also?

Federer had 20% of his capacity at 17? I guess we can't count the French Open Borg won at 17 or Michael Chang at 17. Therefore Borg has only 10 majors and Michael Chang none. How about the Grand Slam of Connolly? That doesn't count either.

In all seriousness of course we should count the head to head between Federer at 17 and Spadea but we all know that Federer was not the player he would be at 17 so we take that into account.

With his kevlar strings, Laver would move in on Roddick's serve and take it in the air as a volley.

The serve would be 142 mph; the volley would be 152 mph.

(The last time Roddick actually "ripped" a forehand was at the US Open in 2003.)

Hey, Roddick almost lost to 50 year old John McEnroe in WTT a few years ago. How Johnny Mac, this awful old timer could hang with the awesome modern game of Roddick is beyond me? Incidentally can someone explain how Roddick's game with a serve and forehand is modern?

But forget about that pathetic no talent John McEnroe, he is nothing compared to Spadea. I understand Spadea is now going to play tennis by sitting down on the side and just using the force to control the racquet and ball. You can't lob him because the force will lift the racquet high enough to always put away the overhead.

No, because if Vince was a Sith he would use a light saber instead of a racquet. Its too graphic to describe what Vince would do to his opponents with a light saber.

Okay since you are hopefully being serious. Laver faced some players of the level of Roddick on serve (and I think Roddick has an all time great serve) like Pancho Gonzalez, Lew Hoad, Roscoe Tanner, Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith and John Newcombe so I think he could be somewhat effective returning serve against Roddick. Since Roddick's serve is so great I would generally expect in most matches that Roddick to win the clear majority of points (amd that would be the case against any player that lived I believe except maybe on slow clay at times) that he serves but I believe Laver would break Roddick more often than Roddick would break him.

It's a tough question since Roddick is a fabulous serve but I do believe Laver would be far more effective than an average player in returning Roddick's serve. If Laver was "on" his game, it would be very interesting to see what he would do.

Roddick has arguably the best serve of the 2000's. Roddick has in my opinion less skills than for example Federer but he holds serve more often.

With Vince it's easy. Roddick wins zero points on serve against the almighty Vince.:)

Vince would employ the FORCE to stop Roddick's serve in mid-air just after it bounces off the court. The InVINCEable One would then simply walk up to it swat it into the open court behind Roddick.

Roddick would be lucky to get a glimpse of the ball bouncing on his side of the court just inside the baseline stripe, out of the corner of his eye as his finishes his service motion. The ball would hit the back fence before Roddick could even take a step.

Yeah, but Roddick has beaten Pong. And any man who can do that, well, you'd have to say that he would figure out a way to make a decent showing against a Jedi.

Now, I know that might sound strange coming from a Vincetard like myself. But hear me out. I am not saying that Roddick would actually beat Spadea. Heck I'm not even saying Pong would beat Spadea. I'm just saying.

Well I'll write this. Roddick may on occasion be able to get his racquet on some of Vince's shots at times. He won't win the point but he would get his racquet on the ball on occasion. Unless Vince decides to use the Jedi Mind Trick on Roddick. "These are not the tennis balls you seek to hit."
