I cannot believe the Australian Open starts in two weeks!

Well, two weeks and a couple days. TV coverage starts on January 15 where I live.

With the general rush of the holidays and the fact that by the end of the tennis season, I am fully prepared and willing to step away from intensly following the sport for a while, the beginning of the season always sneaks up on me. And, I always forget that there's no long lead up to the AO, as there is with the entire clay season leading up to the French Open. Just a couple of events and then, BOOM!, Slam time. Am, I ready for this? Lol.

This my be my last Slam with Tennis Channel. Need to get those cable costs down. I know TTC won some lawsuit with cable providers to not be treated differently than the Golf Channel and other similar channels, but I wonder if those providers will actually move TTC to a more general (and cheaper) cable package anytime soon.

It's been looong enough for me. Can't wait. In fact, I'm already seriously pumped for Doha, Chennai and Brisbane

I've got the finals weekend booked off work so I shall be sitting in bed watching that.

Good bye decent sleep pattern... again!

Totally agree. Staying up late (12 a.m, 1 a.m) to finish a match is no big deal since I have a very short commute and can still get a decent amount of sleep before work.

But, those 7:30 p.m. night matches at the AO (which are regularly great matches) start at 2:30 a.m. where I live. Sometimes I'll record the match, but, there's just no substitute to watching it live. I figure it's only two weeks of craziness, so I'll be okay.

'Sleep is for the weak'

Bring on waking up at 4am for matches and hitting the BBC red button every day.
I thought you didn't sleep because it's for the weak? ;)

I'm wondering if some Europeans agree with me that this is the best Slam as a student/schoolkid/unemployed etc. Me being a student, I like this one the best, because I love it to wake up early, when the whole world seems a sleep and drift off to the other side of the world, where everyone is lively, feeling like the only tennis nut in the whole city. The big difference with USO is that you watch it into the day. When the US Open matches last, you get tired and need some sleep etc. and you go to bed after the match, while if a AO match lasts, you just watch it into the morning and you kind of get fitter as the match goes on and on, and it's the story of your day basically.

This is the first year I have a proper job during AO, boo hoo. I'll have to miss a lot of this year because of y'know, sleep :( The past few years of slams have been good fun as a student, writing lab reports from midnight to midday with the AO on in the background haha.

Get a DVR, the first few rounds suck anyways so no one is missing out. They're just warm up for the top pros, would be more difficult for them if they did not receive that kind of a warm up.

OP sounds like he wants it postponed ;). Luckily AO (and FO) are the only ones I can watch at decent hours.

I think WO has started having night or late matches too :(

US matches are the worst, afternoon session at 2:30 am my time. Come on, AO !!! Can't wait 4 U.

Woot!

Any sports fan should have Tivo or a DVR for recording matches when working/sleeping. Great for tennis or World Cup matches which are always on at indecent hours.

I am not that well versed with US geography,Can u explain me how the time zones works in US??

There are four time zones in the continental United States (i.e., the 48 contiguous states, not including Alaska and Hawaii or other outlying holdings or territories), with time becoming earlier as you move east to west, or later as you move west to east.

So, as an example of the four time zones:

Eastern (example, New York City) 12:00 p.m.

Central (Chicago) 11:00 a.m.

Mountain (Denver) 10:00 a.m.

Pacific (Los Angeles) 9:00 a.m.

Eastern time zone (technically called Eastern Standard Time or E.S.T.) is 5 hours behind London. So, 12 p.m. in New York, is 5 p.m. in London, the same day.

Further, New York is 16 hours behind Melbourne, and Los Angeles is 19 hours behind Melbourne

So, for example, an AO night match starting at 7:30 p.m. on a Friday in Melbourne, will start at 3:30 a.m. on Friday in New York, 2:30 a.m. Friday where I live in Illinois, 1:30 a.m. Friday in Denver, and 12:30 a.m. Firday in Los Angeles.

A match starting in Melbourne at 12 p.m on Friday will start at 8 p.m. on Thursday in New York, 7 p.m on Thursday in Chicago, 6 p.m Thursday in Denver, and 5 p.m. Thursday in Los Angeles.

I am west coast USA, which is -8 hrs from GMT. There are 9 different time zones here but for the most part we use either Eastern or Western or Central. The difference between east and west is 3 hours. We are 3 hours behind East.

Let me show u a cool map, you can find your own time zone and determine how many hours you are ahead, or behind, Melbourne australia.

For example, according to this map, San Francisco, which is the same time zone that I am in, is -8 hours from UCT or the international Time (GMT) and Melbourne is +11 from GMT therefore Melbourne is 8+11=19 hours Ahead of me.

Damn, that's a lots of time zones..I know US is in itself a very diverse country??Like we have in india, when we move from one state to another the language changes, food preferences changes and apparence of people changes.I live in a state named Uttar Pradesh(UP) which has a huge population of nearly 200 million..Do you guys have states in which where there are more black people or people from other countries just for example as the differenciation pattern may vary??

Yeah... bookmark the home page ... there is search box there on the middle left, just put any city name and it gives you all the info you need. Weather, wind, time..etc

www.timeanddate.com

Google is also pretty cool - if you type in 'time' then the place name, it will immediately display the time there e.g. time brisbane will show the time in brisbane right now

The AO is my least favorite slam and has been for years. The winner has won it already before it even begins so that just makes it suck even worse when already sucked enough before.

Not sure I'd go as far as that. But it does lend itself to some stinker finalists.

I like AO, maybe even more than USO. If you look past few years the event goes on very smoothly, specially if you compare it with USO.

Then I like RG, even tho there is no night matches. I like the longer rallies.

I've always felt AO is the most special GS to watch because of the early morning matches. It's even more special to watch as I took up the game back in August so not only am I watching the matches to see how the players get on but also for their technique and analyse everything they do on court and see how I would apply it to my own game.

Can't wait for it to start.

I hope Murray makes it 3rd time lucky in Australia.

You're lucky mate. Coverage starts at midnight each day in the UK.

They almost always start with a women's match, and in the second half of the tournament, I think it starts a little later as well. But of course, you are unlucky, being even 1 more hour away (which I forgot about when I started typing). For me, it's 1 am, than I calculate 2 more hours and wake up at 3 or 3.30 to watch the men's match.
