Come on pp the wilson grip is not the best grip its just the one you like, I can't stand wilson grips, they are too round, the bevels all the same, they hurt my wrist with my fw grips. The rectangular grip, imo is more manipulative, the longer side bevels more important for the V between finger and thumb and the flat of your fingers on the other side.

There's no best grip, there's only what makes you feel happiest.

Yeah I know man, I was being tongue in cheek, but for me the Wilson is my favorite grip shape.

Quote for truth. You are like me and use Western off both sides so this makes the rectangular Head shape more comfortable.

I find an SW grip works better for me on the rounder grip shapes like Bab or Wilson but the Head shape is great for full Western.

Ross, point take re the BLX :) I just didn't want you to think that the BLX was life changing over the N. If anything, I prefer the N.

Interesting. For me, my fave 2 are Bab and Wilson - and I always imagined I got a more natural and effortless strong SW/Western grip with these 2 - and especially with an actual smaller grip size... I know I'm not alone in preferring a smaller grip than is in fact natural.

Thanks ^^^... point taken re Japanese 6.1. So, yes, provided I can get 1 that specs-wise is on the money, it does look like my next bout of 'racketaholic behaviour' will see me checking out the BLX 95... I'm just such a lover of the N95, I'm too curious now about the BLX - especially after other diary posters experiences. Indeed it may well not be quite for me ultimately, but, what the heck?... Another reason i like the wilson is for on serve. It is easy to get the web between my thumb and index finger right towards the bottom in a conti grip. It just feels very natural. Also my forehand grip changes from sw to western and in between depending on the shot and the wilson seems to really make it easy for me to feel it in a split second.

On serve i have been fixing my pronation just to really help my wrist, and i noticed that if i add topspin to every serve, it just seems to be effortless to snap through the ball and add pace and a heavy kick off the bounce. Not sure how you guys like to serve, but adding that wiping motion and hitting up on the ball and just snapping through results in a very nasty serve with this racquet.

^ Well put.

I too prefer wilson grips just for this reason. Feels natural, from east to west.

---------

On a side note... what's up with PolyStar Energy?... this string is terrible. I strung it up at 58.... it is unplayable now after 2 sets. Feels way under 50. Gotta cut it out. Unplayable in the 6.1, too much pop... not enough top.

The TB (@54) feels great in n95 though.. superb actually. Compliments the softer flex and really adds the right amount of power.

On the 2nd BLX, I've got savage at 52... and it's almost perfect. Savage really does have great tension maintenance and is much softer than any other from lux.. except ace and M2.

Want try that turbotwist from weisscannon 6 Star and silverstring. Seem very interesting.

Tour bite is scary in the blx. I love when you hit out and dime it..it almost feels like the ball is not there on contact for a split second. That feeling is a sure sign you just crushed a winner. Only stick where i feel like i can attack higher level players by turning up the spin. Now and then a pure western grip just matches the rhythm of the ball coming at you and it still hits so big even with all that spin behind it.

Interesting thread in the pro equipment section on Rafa adding more weight to his apd. I'll be interested to see the specs after the AO. Said he wanted to do it after the USO last year but his schedule was too tight. Wonder if he went over the magic 340g mark. He wants more power which is understandable given the club that Nole is using.

He must have seen our posts earlier this year about adding the fishing weights under the buttcap.....lol

Klem, you're right about Polystar; that stuff is horrible....at any tension.

^ There is also another article on tennis.com , Rafa says he wanted more power on serve.. but still hasn't dialed in the forehand.

I think it's a good move for Nadal, maybe it will prolong his career and health as well. More put away power and a bigger serve = shorter points and less running around... maybe he'll even incorporate ... some... (dare I say it?) ... S..T..R..A..T..E..G..Y..????~!!!??

I had succumbed to a scrum with a fellow TT'r who believed that the APD was more powerful than the 6.1tour90.

I always believed that this was subjective... if one can swing the 90 at the same speed as the apd.. then the 90 is much... much ...more powerful.

I could never groove with the apd... felt like a toy. The PD on the other hand... I was finding way more power and spin with that one.

Nadal could flatten out his strokes a little more too. He does do that every once in a while - it would be interesting to see him play with a little less top and a little more pop.

BROKEN GROMMET BIT QUESTION...

Am considering buying a frame (a Bab) off a contact. However, was just told and have just seen 1 part of the grommet is missing/broken (bit which pokes through upper hoop and the string slots through.) Q. Is this potentially a big issue or not such a big deal and won't effect performance (and/or a new grommet strip cold easily resolve)? Any advice gratefully sought. TIA

Well the TB just continues to stand out in terms of spin production. I will probably stick with the 1.20 as it seems to last a long time and is easy to string.

The SS is in my other racquet. I am going to try out the Iontec and if that is as good as SS, I will probably get a reel of that and TB. SS is really nice..allows me to do any shot I want, but the TB just blows my mind with how much spin I'm getting. This really is apparent on serve.

Yeah, it's a bit of an overload that's now upon us 'holics. But...

Speak more of your 85 triumphs. Curious. Mad Dog just strung mine up with the Iontec, eager to see how it plays now.

My resolution for 2012: learn to hit through the ball a lot more than I do. The pro in palm springs reiterated that I need to learn to hit through it more than brush it, which I can manage well enough with many sticks but that's part of my match-play downfall with the 85, for sure. There just isn't the real-estate or weight freedom to do so.

Side racquet note: same pro in Palm Springs, who plays with a BLX Blade 98, was curious about my Ace Mid, then hit with my spare and loved it. Said he'd never heard of the stick but was interested.

OK guys I had another hit with the Bio 400 Tour and although this does not fit our usual fair( i.e player sticks around 12 ounces, 320 swing weight or higher). I really think this frame may get over looked. Anyone who has played a Aeropro Drive, Pure Drive, Organix 8 etc and did not find a match you owe it to yourself to give this a go. Racquet is really impressive. Power, spin, are in abundance as one would expect based on the specs but the control and comfort this stick has is somewhat surprising . This racquet is what I wished the Organix 8 315 played like. It has all the same attributes, but IMO has much better control. The only drawback I could see was at net, if you are more of an all court player you will want to add a touch of lead to the head to aid in some stability.

Fed,

Agree about the attractive racket options looming. Among others, the new Pres Pro is interesting me now (I'm wondering if it hits a bit heavier than the last iteration.) In theory, the new Rad Pro should be a good fit for me. The upcoming PD definitely captures my attention what with comparisons to the Swirlie versions being made. There's all those Wilsons to consider of course (this could actually be a racketaholic side-project all of its own.) Then I'm also still catching up on a fair few rackets certainly you in the States have been checking out for ages (BLX 95, for example)... so, doesn't look like my racketaholicism is going to be cured any time soon.:)

JG,

Murray,

Although I've never been a Dunlop kind of a guy, you make some very noteworthy comments re the Bio 400 Tour, and not least how it's the rack you wished the Org 8 315 was (I've been really keen to hit with this for months.) Keep the praise coming and I may have to sit up and take proper notice. BTW, what's the story with you and the Exo though? Given it the chop? How does it compare to the Bio 400 T?

I am curious about the new pres pro. The last one was close to perfect.
Wilson right now is a continent unto itself. I already hit the new tour 90, its awesome.
The new rad pro is not for me. Too spongy.
Hard to resist a black pd...have to remember that cortex destroys families.

To top it off, I love my new iontec 85. Pure bliss. Might lay low for awhile with the 85 and wait for the classifieds.

Right on. Iontec in Mad Dog's 85 always felt so perfect to me so excited that mine is now laced up with the stuff. Have yet to try it out.

Have to admit, the frames I would love to throw in a demo box right now would be the new Prestige Mid (12.3 with a 317 swingweight and a 63 flex, and a supposedly plusher, more forgiving frame than the YT Mid (my old frame)); Prestige MP or Pro (those testers are salivating whilst ripping some serious shots); and the Yonex XI 98 (just love the specs).

I like Fed's idea: 85ing it whilst lurking for the initial sell offs once these frames hit. My kind of 'holic.

Gads remeber when you tried the gosen polymaster in the bc20 and i think i recall you said it was good, did you test it further?

I would like to try a few other polys in my Melbourne, dont get me wrong the TB works fine but you do lose some of the pocketing that I get from my volkl mids. Problem is I love the feel and grip of TB and havent found anything with the same stability and control. But with the Melly you have to string it lower as it strings up tight and Im hitting slightly long. The best string i tested other than TB was the Gosen as i could string it tight and it still felt plush and pocketed well. It might just be (like my bc20) that I have to restring more often.

Ross
I know, I was after a Becker legend as I believe that and the Melbourne are the same racket with a slightly different layup. Like the pb10mid it was a great seller cos they made an easier to use dnx10mid, the same imo is with the Melbourne, its an easier to use Legend and as I mod up in weight it should be fine for me. The reviews state that this stick can be strung tighter than the Melbourne which should bring my Tour Bite into play at the tension Im used to.

The blx95 ( 18x20 ) comes in the deal....and after all the reviews I will give it a good go. I really liked the n95 but i felt it lacked in manouverability, the k95 I loved but my arm didnt like it, manouverable with del potro pop! So it will be interesting to see how it compares to the Beckers.

Looking forward to the year ahead with all the new wilsons, heads etc coming out, also looking forward to getting some mild weather so I can get out and get some continuous play time in so I can fine tune.

I can see myself buying a new BLX 95..2 new ones purchased throughout this year and 2 older PJs would make for a nice racquet bag.

Head Prestige Pro -sounds nice, but also like the BLX 95..except less power and doesn't have the Wilson grip..soo, I am not sure if I need to check it out.

Rad Pro - think I moved on from Head this year..not so into the new stuff.

In all honesty, I am not really looking at any sticks right now thanks to ol Willy here. Maybe Prince will drop some nastiness, but as a home stringer, I truly appreciate Wilson a lot.

I am sure the new pure drive will get a TW mega rating and we will all consider cortex at some point. Just not sure how it can beat the BLx..can anything? I ask because I lose that precision control with Babs, and the Willy hits just as big.

I do have some iontec coming ,and am pretty stoked to see how it hits in the BLX. sounds like a perfect string for the cooler weather as well.

6.1 Diary dudes,

As I haven't really experimented much with the N95 strings and tension-wise (TB @ 52 has been my go to set up), and as it seems I shall be getting a BLX 95 in the near future, what's your verdict or general thoughts on full polys (your faves for this rack) and best tensions re the 6.1? Also, how about hybrids here? (PP, I did like that Beast/Bab Nvy in my Exo.) Full multi's? I don't know...

The 6.1 love fest continues :) ...

I do so agree with you matie, the control and huge oomph of the 6.1s firmly puts it in GROAT contention... unfortunately though the Pres Pro, TGK, and a a fair few older Head MPs like the PT630, i. Pres, Rad Tours, etc (and the Pres mid come to that) just swings so beautifully for me and have so many attributes including build quality, balance and weighting, etc, well, despite the insurmountable evidence of some years that suggests these frames are a touch too demanding for me, I'm pretty sure I'll be checking out the new Pres Pro eventually.

Ross, I keep the BLX under 55 with full poly..52#s on silver string, 50#s on TB.

A hybrid I would probably do at 50/54.

TB plays incredibly well in this racquet..massive spin and pace. As Gads noted, the feel is not amazing, but it is still rather nice if you keep it around 50. I actually thought it had a nice plushness to it for being such a tournament string. What I do is have 2 BLXs..one that I will throw TB in for matches, and the other as a backup with a softer, more durable string that I can leave in as long as I need, and still use reliably in a match situation. I am hoping the Iontec fits the bill here

Holics,

What is the best co poly that still remains inherently stiff but has a soft feel?

No twist strings, I don't like them, I consider the likes of ppp and ss as not been inherently stiff.

I liked b5e but it felt thin, maybe a thicker gauge, hmmm....something like that.....??

Meaghan

b5e is similar to ss in feel, and they are both softer, so im not sure what you are looking for.

Yeah I agree but the edges imo create a stiffer feeling string bed. Also I can only get it in 1.24 mm and that felt thin. Just want to try a softer poly which has some of those qualities of control I like with a stiffer string, hard to describe but gosen poly master had it.

I have to say I've had more than a few twinges and achey wrists etc over the years with the 6.1 (various versions), so I might be tread with a certain caution perhaps when it comes to set ups. A hybrid maybe? Hmm, we'll see. Also I'm not quite so into TB in the N95 as I've been into other frames strung with it. Cheers though - I'll definitely keep your comments in mind.

When it comes to treading with caution, I would suggest Weiscannon Silverstring at 52#s and Babo NV at 56. I believe that little setup could do you very very nicely.

And Silverstring feels like b5e? That wasn't my recollection, but I wonder if I'm getting SS mixed up in my mind with Big Hitter Silver. I thought SS had a crisper feel while b5e to me was just too dead/mushy feeling.

Could be the coating. MD and I were talking about how we've never felt 100 percent comfortable with any black string before. The softness the oily black coating brings to the table may lose just enough raw feel of the ball for me. Don't know if that's the case at all but it's my best guess as to why I've never loved any black string.

Ross,

It is with heavy heart to report that I have given up on the EXO. Although I love it's uniqueness, bottom line I just seemed to be working a lot harder to get wins. As far as the Bio 400 Tour goes- this is the first time in a long time that I felt dialed in from the first hit. It has that magical combination of forgiveness, pop, spin, control and comfort that I have yet to find. I like how it plays stock but could also be a great platform stick due to it's weight and head light balance.
neverstopplaying has started a nice review thread about this stick and I agree with many of the comments eluding to this stick as a " players tweener"

I have been on a bit of a stick frenzy of late including a new Melbourne, and a 2012 Tfight 320 and as brilliant as these sticks may be, neither have me wanting to put down the 400 Tour. So any racquetaholics out there searching for a used Melbourne or a Tfight 320 for a good price should keep a look out in the For Sale section as I want to stock up on a couple of these 400 Tours so I can test different strings, tensions and maybe see how it plays with lead.

Murray, I TOTALLY know what you mean re the Exo and having to work too hard for the win. I'm actually very close to selling mine, however, I had a new string job lately and want to see if there's an improvement before, well, bowing to the inevitable. I actually really like the Exo and it ticks a lot of boxes, but I had a few too many somewhat painful losses last year - losses I'm fairly sure I would have narrowly reversed and won if I'd had my APD, as well as N95 too I reckon. From the get go I've had a strong feeling that the lack of put away oomph and serve pop was making like very difficult for me. Where I used to win against certain players by a narrow margin consistently, I now lost to by a narrow margin consistently. Anyhow, it's great you're having such a love in with the 400 Tour. Keep us updated on your progress. Maybe 1 day I'll give a Dunlop a go (the 500 maybe or indeed the 400)... btw, yes, I posted on never's excellent thread.

I had the same problem with the beautiful ozone pro tour, I had to add a serious amount of weight at 12 to overcome the problem. This worked a treat however it had an adverse affect on serve and could never marry the two.

Looking forward to hitting with the blx95 hopefully its a mix between the two previous models.
The melbourne its still going strong, still tinkering but I'm close, played two sets of doubles the other day and don't think I lost a point on serve, seriously good on serve for me.
There's a small issue with the pitch that comes off the string bed, trying to slightly deaden it, two dampeners works but that's illegal and looks stupid! It doesn't really bother me in play just one of those ocd things that we all seem to have. Working on a bit of lead on the bridge at the mo instead of doing some proper work. Watching dolgo v stepanek too, glad there's no spy cameras, or is there, the wife can be devious!

I actually have a pair (currently for sale on string forum dot net) and they weigh 302 and 303 grams unstrung. I don't know the swingweight. I played with it for two hours in a row, but I had no problems with the swingweight. I just could not get my one-handed backhand, my primary weapon, dialed in, which is a deal breaker for me. I suppose the Plus length is better suited for players with a two-handed backhand. Other than that, it's a nice frame, great on groundies and serves, and not too bad on volleys either. I just like standard length and thinner-beamed rackets better, I guess.

Ross, have you tried the RDS001 mid? I've heard great things and loved my few hittings with it, but they were quite short. Can you compare it to the C10 Pro? Arm comfort as well?

I have been on a bit of a stick frenzy of late including a new Melbourne, and a 2012 Tfight 320 and as brilliant as these sticks may be, neither have me wanting to put down the 400 Tour.

How is the power level of the Melbourne compared to the 320?

Hello there Mansewerz, afraid I've never hit with a RDS001 mid... can any RHs here help are friend with his query?... From your signature I see you're still hitting with your C10s. Well done on such loyalty. I recall when you switched to them. FWIW, I'd recommend the Exo Tour 100 to anyone who likes the C10 Pro. There are a few similarities there IMO - which for me are both negative and positive.

In seriousness, these frames are pretty fantastic. I've just been feeling an itch, and with my birthday money, thinking of getting an RDS001 to spin around. The biggest thing that bothers me about the C10 pro is grip size. Sometimes it feels great, but as i'm trying to hold a true semiwestern, it's feeling like the bevel is too small. Maybe I'm better off spending my money on sending em into racquet max for some attiva pallets.
