ProKennex 7G nat gut setup

Hi Guys,

I am getting a prokennex 7G rackuet and I have decided that besides this arm friendly rackuet to have a friendly strings setup as well.

I love the nat gut/poly setup but I think I do need to go to even a most friendly setup ( 55 years old ....) as I do have permanet ( chronic) pain in my arms.

I hate to be less competitive ( as I think the nat gut/poly or full poly setup are the best) but just to extend my years of playing tennis I must to do it trying to be competitive as well.

My Q's:

1)What will be the best setup for 7G with full poly/
2) what will be the best string to try before the setup with full gut ( I hate to cut a 42+taxes gut just for testing strings setup). I rather prefer to try/cut cheap strings before going to nat gut setup.

Thank you guys.

If you insist in soft setup, Technifibre XR1 (multi) or Pacific Classic Gut ("cheap" and good quality gut). Also you can combine Classic gut mains and XR1 crosses.

I bought one for my wife with wilson nat gut at 57(M) and 55(X) with 5-10% prestrech for my wife one week back. She seems to be happy about it.

If you want to try full poly, then try an 18g string around 52 range or so.

try nat gut in mains and a cheap soft string in the crosses..half the price and twice as nice

I am just wonder if someone has an experience with 7G with full nat gut or nylon.

Thanks, Vergica

I carry three PK 7Gs in my bag. Just after Xmas, I strung Wilson natural gut 16g in the PKs. To compare it with all the multifilaments (see link below) I've tried, I tested it at 60 pounds on my lockout machine to match the multifilament testing tension. The reviews below with an "A" after the number were tested in the PK 7Gs.

60 pounds on the natural gut was almost perfect for cooler winter conditions. If I had to play with it again, I might up the tension to 62 or 63 pounds if it was not winter.

My favorite setup for 7G was VS in the main at 71 lbs and M2 Pro in the cross at 67 lbs. But that's just me.

Thank you for all replies.

Just as a curiosity why 59/61 with Klip nat gut 17 as opose to a 60/60 setup.
I do have a set of Babolat VS 17 I was thinking of a 60/60 setup. At this high tension is nat gut still arm friendly?

The theory behind the 2lbs rise in tension on the crosses is for string movement. Yes, this setup is great. I have had 3 labrum tear repairs on my right shoulder and can play three times a week with no pain.

Gut at 60 is very soft.

I have the 7g customed to 360g and strung with Klip gut 16g and Gosen Micro Sheep 17g @ 56 / 58 lbs, so far so good, for 2 months still going good but starts to move a little bit.

If someone use Rip Control 17 for 7g and in which tension setup. Also any other soft hybrid setup for 7G ( w/o poly)?

I've been using PK7g + full bed of Rip 17 @62 for a few years now. I have occassional elbow problems and find the setup to be fairly comfy. I hit a flatter ball than my pals and am not a string breaker but you can try the 16 gauge if that's a concern, I recall it being comfy as well.

Still liking my PK7g after many years and demos. But I wonder if the extended length loads my elbow too much on late balls. When the new 27" Qtour with Kinetic comes out in March, will be giving it a try.

I am having a bout of TE with the PK 7G but I think it had more to do with wet balls at our club (overwatered clay). Also getting a little GE which makes me think it is not due to the slight extra length but the heavy balls.

From the reviews of Rip 17 I could see it is not that great in providing power ( and at 62...) and I am thinking of having a hybrid with Nat Gut 17 ( BAB VS or Klip ) in mains with RIP 17 in crosses.

A setup nat gut/RIP at 56/60 ( as RP will lose tension ) make ay sense?

I played 5 sets of dubs last week in 50-degree weather with my PK7g, zero problems. Afterwards, picked up a friend's AG200 (95 sq in, full poly) for fun ... hit a forehand where the ball seemed to catch the *bottom* of the hoop ... electric pain up the top of the forearm near the elbow! I was probably tired from hitting lots of OHBH's but I won't go near that deathstick again :)

Yes, RIP is lower powered, so if you want more power / higher throw angle, lowering the tension makes sense. That said, while the PK7g isn't a Pure Drive or Prince Black, I get some nice pop off it.

Not a gut user (yet) so hope someone else will comment on the hybrid setup. Let us know what you end up doing.

I tried a hybrid with a Black Mamba poly and the first 5 hits all jarred my elbow. Put the racket back in the bag and it got the scissors that night.

What are the symptoms? I think I hurt my arm lifting weights and throwing a ball around that was way too light last week.

at my elbow the end area of my forearm muscle is sore and feels like I threw out my arm. I have been icing and it is getting better. On groundstrokes I do not really feel any pain, but now and then I do..nonthng major. Just curious. I am taking a week or 2 off from lifting.
