It Is Time For Maria To Retake Her Rightful Seat On The Throne Of The WTA

Maria Sharapova was almost completely swept out of women's tennis after a shoulder surgery that NO OTHER TENNIS PLAYER HAS EVER RECOVERED FROM TO WIN A GRAND SLAM EVENT. She was 21, winner of three grand slam events and the best of her generation.

However, she came back, with at times horrible results and stuck it out. She once again proclaimed her love for the sport of tennis after upsetting Petra Kvitova. She's 24, and once again in the finals of another Australian Open.

Let's get this straight right now. Maria Sharapova is the premier player of her generation, in spite of a near career-ending injury and is poised to win her fourth grand slam title and regain her number one ranking. She's defeated Justine Henin and Serena Williams in grand slam finals of Generation Suck.

Like her or not, she long ago had millions and could have retired, but she stuck it out because she wanted to compete again. That's the type of champion tennis fans want. A champion who loves the sport.

Rise Maria. Rise again. Restore order in the WTA for the first time since Stefanie Graf. Rise.

Remarkable come back from major surgery by Maria. She is playing some great tennis. And her dedication and desire is very admirable.

Unfortunately though, I can't stand to watch her what with all the horrible noises she makes.

Admirable but who exactly is she beating? I don't exactly see her going through the women's version of Roga and Rafa!
The WTA is a complete mess.

The WTA is a complete mess.
The AO women's semifinals were the best matchups in years on the WTA. Three former GS champions.

Once Serena and Kim retire, there will no longer be lower-ranked messes in the draw. Harsh, but true. Their dozens of comebacks are quite old and no longer hold credibility with fans. Its time they retire into the sunset.

The only two comeback stories that really mattered were Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles. All the others were just fake, filler material for television drama.

Yeah, she said it.

The WTA is a complete mess.

It is not a complete mess. There are 5 or 6 players right now who are all contending for the top spots. So one or two women are not dominating like in the Evert/Navratilova days. Who says that that is the standard for women's tennis? Isn't it more interesting when there are many women competing for the top spot instead of just one or two?

Maria certainly deserves the mindless scream Queen ball basher throne.

The same ball bashing that won her millions of dollars in prize money and earned her the highest paid female athlete label? I wouldn't mind ball bashing if I were her.

Maria has never occupied the WTA throne. Never ended a year ranked #1, never defended a slam title, never won more than 1 slam in a year, 2 or 3 years between her slam wins. Even if she does win the final she will be far removed from the dominant player you wish to make her out to be. Pray tell when was Maria's peak exactly:

2004- won Wimbledon and WTA Championships, but only 1 time past the 3rd round of 3 of the 4 slams, a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal loss to Paola Saurez at the French Open

2005- lost in semis of 3 of 4 slams, quarters in other.

2006- lost in semis of Australian Open, Wimbledon, WTA Championships, 4th round of French. Won U.S Open but overall overshadowed by Henin and Mauresmo. Still probably best year ever.

2007- lost Australian Open and WTA Championships final. Year dominated by Henin, and to lesser degree Williams.

2008- won Australian Open, then was invisible or injured rest of year.

Where pray tell is this dominance that one is to believe ever existed.

As for the future Maria had to play her best to beat a poor Kvitova in 3 sets in the semis, and Kvitova still had chances to win. Not to mention Kvitova is better on all of grass, clay, and indoors than on outdoor hard courts. Kvitova most times would beat Maria today, and Kvitova is much younger with much improvement left. We will see what happens in the final with Azarenka, but they are roughly equal in ability right now, and Azarenka too is younger with more improvement left. Not to mention the future players to come, and the strong veterans who usually beat Maria when they face off who are still playing like Serena.

As for best player of her generation:

Serena- 13 slams
Venus- 7 slams
Henin- 7 slams
Clijsters- 4 slams
Sharapova- 4 slams (if she wins, which is far from certain)

All of this..thank you for debunking this nonsense from Majorly Mental.

Sharapova once again owned by players in finals with better games.

Petra- good serve, shotmaking ability, more power, variety , and can volley

Vika- good serve, solid return, better movement, good transition and net game, power, shotmaking ability.

Hell, she even got schooled by old Li Na..who has power and shotmaking ability and is a better movement.

Serena was always the prototype for the kind of player that could beat sharapova. someone who matches or exceeds her power , with superior movement.

Sharapova is a one trick pony who has to face some thoroughbreds now.

All true, and it cannot be ignored. I wanted her to win this final, but framed it with the fact the hypothetical win still would not make her a legend of her generation or on any all-time list. Her skills were never going to elevate her to the elite level of player, hence the large gaps between her majors titles.

2004- won Wimbledon and WTA Championships, but only 1 time past the 3rd round of 3 of the 4 slams, a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal loss to Paola Saurez at the French Open

It never existed, and could not with her limited skills. As Maria ages (she IS a veteran, and firmy part of the Williams/Henin/Kim generation), I know she realizes her opportunities for majors are fading with every passing year, so she would probably be happy to win one or two before calling it quits. That would place her in the range of a Sanchez-Vicario in terms of generational accomplishment, and for her abilities, that's an acceptable record to retire on.

As for best player of her generation:

Serena- 13 slams
Venus- 7 slams
Henin- 7 slams
Clijsters- 4 slams
Sharapova- 4 slams (if she wins, which is far from certain)

...and with her failure to win major #4, she must see the handwriting on the wall. She will never be a tennis legend, but she can earn a somewhat acceptable mention in the story of her generation.

True; this idea of "Restore order in the WTA for the first time since..." is a wholly false premise, since a player with only three majors (years between them), never dominated the greatest (by far) of her generation cannot restore something she never had the ability to experience or shape.

I'll be impressed if she plays until she's 30. I think once she figures out that she has to hit more than a few powerful shots to win she'll either learn to play different as the match dictates or she will get out. Martina said it best when she was saying the other night how Maria only knows one speed. I think the same thing is happening to Serena. You got girls that can match their power and keep the ball in the court. Azarenka did pretty much what I thought she would do in their finals match. I was surprised that Maria didn't pull up off the gas at some point. It played right into Azarenka's hands. I think women like Kavitiva(sp) and Lusiki(sp) will also give her problems the next couple of years if she hands around that long.

Yes, she got to two finals... and got thoroughly embarrassed in both of them.

"Retake" her throne? This is laughable. In her career, she had the No. 1 ranking for shorts stints. Adding them together you get a total of 17 weeks.

That's less than Jankovic, Wozniacki, Clijsters and Safina.

How anyone can claim it's her "rightful throne" is beyond me.

When was the last time she won a major? Mm-hm. No matter how hard she's fought over the last year, someone else is always superior. As of the recent AO, that still holds true--flying in the face of her fans who swore she as strong and on her way to winning a few of the majors she entered last year.

Number one means nothing if she's not winning majors. Wozniacki's run as a majors-free #1 should have served as a grim reminder of that fact.

I think you guys extremely and completely sick enough to admit Maria's born with a super huge talent. I think it's the passion she has for that talent that makes her successful all these while. Also, talent are a gift from God and she has practice hard since young in order to bring that talent alive to it's FULL potential. She has won 3 grand slams thus far. Hard to deny and she is hunger for success. That's her goal. Thus, please stay tuned for her success.

No serious tennis mind places her on the "best of" anything, which speaks volumes about the reason a thread like this was launched. At best, Sharapova is on Sanchez-Vicario level of success/importance within Maria's generation--which Sharapova should be happy about, as her abilities were not good enough to win more.

More to the point, she's not great at anything.

Others were always superior in too many ways to list, and now, members of another generation have made their mark to pass her by. This does not mean she cannot win another major as her career twilight years approaches, but she's one of the weakest majors winners of hers or any generation.

Maria's "never die fighting spirit" is a phrase that I hear over and over and over about her. I don't doubt that that she has the fire to want to win but how is that different from any other highly ranked player. In my opinion it's one of those stories that gets attached to a player that never seems to leave her (example- Ana Ivanovic playing tennis in a swimming pool). If Maria truly has a never say die fighting spirit wouldn't she realize that just blasting balls at the lines is not a long term strategy for winning. Her game has not adapted or changed in the 10-11 years she has been a professional player. When she is ON she can be lethal. But in a day where most of the top women can blast the ball right back at her, even when she is on the new generation can handle it.

exactly, and she ran into someone who can absorb her pace and doesn't suffer from that "omg! pova's on the other side of the net!" syndrome that has been discovered on the wta tour. vika didn't start well but she was able to right her game enough to pull out a W and a slam title. good for her.

pova's fate is uncertain. i think with the current state of the wta she should be there still late into the slams (unless her game really goes off in the first week) but she'll she need her game to really be there to take another slam. if i remember what i saw at wimbledon, she hit some good shots but kvitova seemed like she had more game that day.

Until Maria learns to proerly construct a point, she will always have issues.

She was going for outrageous winners in the final, even by her blasting standards, when not in a position to do so. No defensive ability at all.

Vika is actually one of the worst matchups Pova can play on the tour.

1. Best current returner in WTA.
2. Takes the ball early, robbing Maria of time.
3. Can generate angles of both wings to move Maria off court.
4. Can handle Maria's pace of shot.
5. Is not intimidated by her at all.
6. Waits for the right ball before injecting pace.

In fact, Azarenka used the Serena model to beat Maria.

I agree, but Maria is nowhere near Sanchez-Vicario.
Sanchez was super consistent all of her career, and IMO much more relevant to her generation than Maria.

Im not trying to disrespect Maria but I think Sanchez sometimes doesn't get the props she desrves.

Exactly, Sanchez was for a while the 2nd best player on the tour behind steffi Graf. If Graf hadn't been in her way she probably would have twice as many majors as she does now and would get a lot more respect then she currently does. All those finals at majors she lost to Steffi..Maria wouldn't have come close to that against Graf. Even at her best she would have been to streaky and flightly to be a true threat in the 90's. If anything, Maria is the Mary Pierce of this generation, not the Arantxa.

I agree Maria is the Mary Pierce of her generation. In historical relevance she falls to about the same rank within her era as Pierce in hers too. Pierce is seen as overall inferior to Graf, Seles, Sanchez, Hingis, Venus, Davenport, Capriati, and to some Sabatini and Novotna in her era. Sharapova is seen as overall vastly inferior to Serena, Venus, Henin, Hingis, Clijsters, Davenport, and likely in the future Kvitova and Azarenka in her era.

Again, players with power, great movement, shotmaking ability, good serves and good/decent returns have always been able to handle her...which is why she was severly overrated in the davenport, henin,WS, mauresmo and clijsters era.

Interesting how you gleefully call for Kim and Serena's retirement...

...mayhaps to ease the way for more majors for Maria...who would struggle to beat them with her lack of movement and woeful serve, perhaps? Too bad she'd still have to deal with Na, Kvitova, Azarenka and a possible Lisicki.

Rofl..Majorly Mental at it again.

In her 3 GS final losses, Maria has:

Won a total of 13 games.
Lost all 3 in straights.
Won more than 3 games in a set only ONCE
Received a bagel and a breadstick in those losses.

And people claim she is best of generation, with such heavy losses and just 3 slams? WTF????

Someone'e been on the sauce again, yep you betcha!

Man..talk about someone who is all or nothing...she is either redlining and too hot to handle or goes down in flames like the damn Hindenburg.
