What are your thoughts of developing a onehander on a junior girl

Why would you want to do that? Does she just naturally gravitate towards one hand?

Probably. Doesn't mean it is wrong. Depends on the kid, her natural abilities, and her desires. Does she want a one-hander? Is she naturally better at it? How competitive is she?

It can be done...but it will take a longer time to learn as opposed to the 2hbh. My daughter's doubles partner is a one hander on that wing and is pretty solid for a 12 year old...has a national ranking and is already a 3 star on TRN. In the long term (and if this is your goal) my personal thought on it, is that a 1 hbh will have more variety than a two hander.
I think it depends on her goals.If she wants to be a professional I would say stick with two hands.The speed of the womens game is forcing them to have to hit open stance on many balls to the backhand side.I dont see any girls really able to hit with one hand on an open stance backhand.

Are you from San Diego, because there is a top ranked Chinese girl with a one hander. She has been top ranked in the 12's in Socal.

Ha, I know, I have one! I'd just not deliberately teach a junior to use a 1hbh - my 14yo son loves trying them but his 2 hander is so much more stable, accurate and powerful. When we play dubs matches together he always plays on the bh side.

Just like the two handed BH, if taught correctly then there is nothing wrong with it. I would say a female player with a nice one handed backhand would have an advantage over other players. Most players, especially girls, are use to playing against two handed BH players. One handed backhand does give you a little more variety and would probably make her a more versatile player.

One of my junior girls wanted to try a one handed backhand just for fun, so I taught it to her, she liked it, got use to it, and now she is a one handed BH player. She is a nationally ranked junior also.
I will actually state that Roger Federer has a one-handed backhand!

I know the thread is for girls, but I can tell you that watching the boys,
a one handed backhand is beautiful to watch.
The kids who do it seem really good at it,
and seem to have a comfort level that I don't always see with the kids who have a 2 handed bh.

Why would you discourage you kid from a one hander? Our two greatest players of all time have one handers.
Funny you mention doubles, best played with a one hander.
Unless she has an issue with her non-dominant hand I would never teach a girl a OHBH. 2HBH topspin is more reliable shot (quoting Navratilova here) and combined with real OHBH slice, volley and dropshot is the most versatile combination. Many girls and pros have 2hbh drive as their money shot. Even those who have good aggressive forehand still often make less mistakes on the backhand side. The improved ability to return serves, to hit aggressively when stretched wide and to change shot direction at the last moment outweght the complications to teach ohbh slice and volley to a two-hander.

Quite simply because I have seen juniors with 1hbh and there is neither the consistency or the power of their peers with 2hbh. This is the modern game we speak of, and it's just a safer bet to teach the 2hbh (even though I am a purist and love the 1hbh).

We all know you need a 1hbh slice backhand in addition to the normal flat/topspin 2hbh. So make her 1hbh slice be as good as possible. Some Graf's in the world used it to OK effect. Start with only slices, then as she wants, you can change it more towards flat/topspin, if she needs it.
Remember, she also hits her 2hbh topspin at the time.

Go the 2 hander. This is coming from a guy with one of the better 1 hbh around. You don't have the control on the stretch and it is easier to hit all the shots ( cc, dtl and lob) with the 2 hander when out of position. When the ball is being hit harder you don't always have the time to take a full swing if you are up on the baseline.
