Hmm. May try one of these gut-poly combos. Hitting with Mad Dog tomorrow night; will try his 85 with gut-poly. Thinking of maybe throwing it into my 7G.

Meags,

Any gut recommendations from this side of the pond? Looking for performance and price here.

Rossy, baseliner, moonballer, doesnt like to venture too close to the evil, nasty net..............has now decided to try gut hmmmmm

I used it a fair bit in my kps88, I crossed it with alu rough like a loon as it only ever lasted a short time, spent a fair few bob too. I perservered with it cos of the wonderful serve I was producing. There is something about the power and movement that is unmatched but its a close call and definately not worth the £30 a set. As I said earlier I used it recently and had major problems, just like the previous time with the 88 groundstrokes I had to reign in, I had to change my natural game. PP is right you need to give it some time to get the balance right and having a stringing machine would of helped at the time too. If you do give it a shot and you should, just use a decent, cheap smooth poly cross.

On a personal level I always liked Pacific Prime gut, I found it crisper than VS but a lot find it the other way round and probably to do with what cross you have in. The Pacific classic gut is about 20 notes so its a good deal. There's some cheap stuff on the bay for £9 maybe worth a pop, tried Global gut from India but it was so uneven that it was real tough to string and I didnt find it gave me much of anything.

The one great advantage is you can string real tight (mid 60's) and have lovely feel from the elasticity and 'give' it has and the control of a tight stringbed. When you drop tension and being used to poly you can find that it is lively with the ball popping everywhere......hmmmm, bugger, it may suit the Melbourne, I think I have never strung it tight enough (bit scared tbh)........bugger bugger pi$$ flaps!!!!

I use gut(m)/alu rough(x) at 50/45 lbs on my kps88. I love the easy power from loose arms and easy swing (exhale and say hmmmmmmm as you swing!!).

First paragraph is correct, R we all need to see some evidence of you serve and volleying if you use gut!

Meags, that last paragraph sums up the "aholicness" in us all perfectly!

I'm really thinking of taking the Gut leap. I tried it in my last demo and wow. Like warm apple pie lol. I had gut mains and alu crosses just like the pros. Are you using poly mains and gut crosses?

BigM

No, I use gut mains and poly crosses, and that is really the way to go. I find Cofocus crosses to play a lot better than ALU crosses and I have tried both.

Gads,

PP,

I've hardly hit with gut/poly hybrid before, but in my 'stringaholic' inner demon would definitely like me to do so! A few stumbling blocks for me would be price of gut. Plus also I know virtually nothing about what to look at - what's really decent - the differences between playing characteristics of various guts, etc. Looks as if I need to do some searching in the strings section etc.

I'd second the Pacific classic to try out. I have some coming. I'm currently using VSTouch, and it is amazing gut, but don't think I need to spend that much.

I would suggest MSV cofocus as your cross. It is very slippery which helps the gut last, inexpensive and you can get it in multiple colors. It pockets the ball very well also so you will like that. Most importantly you will be hitting with some bigtime spin. It is an amazing setup from the baseline and after a brief break in period you will be in heaven.

Definitely keep the tension around 58/53..adjust from there, but if you go too low the setup becomes a trampoline (basically a pure drive). When you have the tension set in just right, this is the best setup you will ever use.

Depends on the stick. Loved it in the YTPP but did not like it in either Tec 320 or APD.

Same here, typhoon is very stick dependent, seems to work well in lower powered smaller racquets, but when put in a more powerful racquet (Tec 320, etc) it just has too much inherent power. I use it in a Prince Diablo mid at 56 lbs, full bed, also lasts quite a long time.

Just played with the Prestige and the Xi 98. Xi is removed from further play. It's a solid average stick, but doesn't really do anything overwhelmingly good or bad. Right down the middle. No 'wow' factor in any department. It is, to its credit, extremely controlled and I like the feel of it -- again, right down the middle.

I felt that way about the Yonny RDS001 Mid - I never really fought with it the way I have with other frames, but it just never really shined in any one area. It was a B student all around - equally adept at spin and power, but not a standout in either area.

The demo urge went away as soon as I dialed in the gut/poly tension. It feels and plays so freaking good man. Now and then I have a string honeymoon, but I usually know within 2 hours if I got the right string and tension and the next stage is how long it lasts me.

If you get a little wild and crazy, you should seriously try the Genesis Hexonic in 1.27 in the Tfight. It does not last that long, but the feel is going to really fire you up.

I liked that setup but Hex 1.27mm felt too thick and didn't have the pinpoint control in the Tec that TB does.

RHs one and all,

Played with the BLX today and I really noticed the speed of this thing in getting to the ball and the general sweet swingability (very important aspect to me right now - and could be the clincher in the few frames I'm looking at ATM.) Also noted that trademark 6.1 zippy big pop (you know, the kind that sometimes just takes you by surprise?) All in all - and despite a sudden hankering to relook at my PresPro, plus a general preference for a bigger head-size - BLX 95 ticks so many boxes for me, I think this has to be reinstalled as my no. 1 contender... BTW, also pleased to see the Iontech play a lot nicer for me on the second outing.

Hoping to hear some good news about scoring some n6.1 18x20s today.

Ross,

Good stuff man. Let's see how the new release is, and if it swings even faster. I will give a detailed comparison to try and help out as well.

For now, I will say that all your boxes will be not only be "ticked" but eradicated if you try it with the gutpoly setup. Ill keep you posted on that as well, but besides the feel, power, spin, control..etc..the tension maintenance is awesome. Full poly is just so labor intensive. You have to restring every week pretty much if you value your arm, while the gut just keeps playing until it breaks.

I may put full multi in my 3rd stick when I get a new one...basically as my emergency backup..but to be honest, I'd rather slap some full gut in that one and just use it now and then. Multi almost feels cheap now after gut.

The secret in the Wilson is to string it tight enough to where it is about to be boardy, but is not. It then settles in, and you are now experiencing a perfect pocket. It seems like this is happening right at 58#s.

808

Professional
A softer racquet like the EXO would not really need the gut poly, but wilsons and babs are prime candidates.

I always thought Kim Clijsters had the sick Bab setup..a Pure Drive with full gut. A lot of people think they will go through it really quickly, but look at Rogi, Djoker, Clijsters..etc..They are not breaking strings all the time during matches and are dealing with the heaviest balls in the world. I dont know, there is just something about it. I figure 2 sticks can last me 2-3 weeks and that is all I need..if I'm wrong and it starts breaking fast..so be it..but gut has this way of hanging on by a strand sometimes for a while.

I realize you two live at opposite ends of the state but was looking for any feedback on LA.

My son got accepted at USC last week and is up for a full ride. They're flying him out there in a few weeks and wanted to know the pros and cons of the California lifestyle :)

PROS:
1. Tennis weather year-round.
2. Hot women everywhere. And USC is the absolute, mind-boggling Holy Grail. I will join your son for lunch and wear a backpack just to visit this enchanted place.
3. Conceivable to actually snowboard and surf in the same day.
4. USC is centrally located, close to Hollywood, Downtown, cool artsy area of Los Feliz, and 30-40 minutes from the beautiful beaches.
5. Great football team. Epic tailgating.
6. The USC Song Girls (actually this maybe needs to be No. 1).
7. The Clippers.

CONS:
1. Year-round tennis leads to year-round racquetholism.
2. These hot women are usually kind of dumb. And they wear sunglasses that are far too big for their faces.
3. Nobody ever actually snowboards and surfs in the same day, it's just what people say they can do.
4. USC is also kind of located in the middle of the hood. The campus itself, though, is gorgeous. Also, your son might never want to visit those Hollywood or Los Feliz areas because getting in your car and traveling here makes you want to shoot yourself.
5. That great football team will put your son at risk of becoming one of the many annoying dudes here who wear sweaty USC ball caps and talk your ear off about how good the team is this year, and about how amazing the incoming recruiting class is. It never ends.
6. There really is no 'con' to go with the Song Girls item from above.
7. The Lakers.

Best of luck to your son. A full ride at USC is quite a handsome and expensive proposition, so he must be quite talented in some area I assume. All the best to him. Any other questions about the move here or if I can help in any way, you or your son can feel free to email me.

Yeah, it won't compare to your 6.1. Decent frame, but just average. ... If there's any Yonnie to try (besides maybe that Wozzy/TW Brittany stick), the 200 is very, very nice in terms of a pillow feel and a beautiful balance. Wish my demo had a poly in it, as the multi is moving around too much for a fair assessment, but I can tell it's a dynamite stick.

Thanks, it's the rude people that would bother me the most :)

Oh yeah, forgot to add this part in my Cons. Many people are somewhat soulless, here. I mean, it's not as bad as the stigma that gets attached, but there are more stuck-up people around here than in most places. The big problem is it's hard to connect and maintain friendships very well, because the city is so darn big and you grow tired of traveling great distances in the traffic. (that's main thing I miss about my beloved New York: hop on the subway, be anywhere in 20 or 30 minutes, don't worry about having any cocktails and driving, etc.) ... BUT, college life is much different. It's all right there for him in abundance... People who grow up or go to college here tend to love it; transplants sometimes grow to hate it because it can be a solitary place if you don't know too many people.

JGads is my new personal hero. He scored me 2 darn near perfect n6.1 18x20s for a beyond ridiculously good price. My tennis life is saved and revived!

Yes yes, the racquetholic eagle god touched Ry today. I happened upon two pristine N 6.1s and snatched them up for our boy, who'd been lamenting having sold his in the past. (see? it pays to be and to know fellow 'holics) ... Will hit with one of them tonight just to get a feel of these lauded NCodes before shipping them off tomorrow. They're basically brand new, have been sitting in a dude's closet for years.

Think I covered it in my add-on post above. I grew up in Houston and have also lived in New York; both of those places have much nicer inhabitants and it just seemed so easy and natural to make friends, everything's accessible. In New York you can't feel your nose sometimes but you feel very much alive and a part of things. Here you sometimes live too much in your own place or in your car and there's just a greater distance between you and everything else. BUT... again, this is me moving here as an adult; the college experience, from what I can tell here, is epic, and you make all of your friends/connections that can completely make LA an amazing place to be.

I love LA and NYC, but gads nailed it.

Id still pick la because of the weather. But nyc has that amazing energy going on. Personally my dream is to live in multiple places throughout the year.

I always forget..dont play tennis when you are really tired. It is like my feet just do not move. But i hit around and then just did serve return practice with our club stud player. Serves started dropping for me and he could not return them..he got some, but we were both pretty tired and did not have a lot of focus.

Anyway, the setup is still alive..slowly adding string savers. Besides the killer feel of the string setup, i have to say the spin is vicious. It is easily as good if not better than any full poly setup i have used. The main thing to watch is tension loss. The poly drops tension a little but it is still very controllable. Plan for about 7 pounds of tension loss and that will do it. I am starting to really get my feel for lobs and drop shots a lot more dialed than i ever could with poly. Also slices are just incredible. It is easier to effortlessly drive slices now. I think gut and the 6.1 just gives me so much ball feel that it really helps me out.

hitting with the heavier sw blx and the lighter..it is so tough to pick a favorite one. The heavier sw just crushes the ball so hard. Its not like the lighter is much different, but you can just feel a little more of that ball crushing sensation.

All,

Have a mate who is so tight he doesn't like to string more than twice a year! Here's the thing though, the last two times I've hit with him his groundies are just continually going long due to the dead string (think he had a poly/multi hybrid), and it's driving me bonkers! He doesn't play more than about once a week. He's a pretty decent rec player. What do you advise me to tell him to go for string-wise? Poly/multi hybrid again? A syn. gut job (I know zero about these)? Something else? He'll obviously be wanting something long-lasting but decent quality with good performance. It's annoying because I used to enjoy hitting with him but now he's just blasting it over the b-line 24/7.

Man oh man am I feeling you there. MD and I hit tonight and I was dead. Awful. Also didn't help that it was cold and windy, which can be the end of you. We got it going a little bit towards the end but we've had better days out there. ... AND... I've got a league match scheduled for tomorrow night. That could be trouble. I'll carbo load or something, see if I can find any basalt bars.

Hit with one of Ry's incoming N6.1s. Pretty sweet. Drives the ball like a 6.1 and swung nicely.

Demo frame wise, man, I wish the RDIS 200 had some decent string in there, not a multi that's old and moving around a lot. That frame moves through the air SO well and easily, has a lot of power, nice big spin, and feels so nice on the arm. The softness of it would be conducive to a good crisp poly like TB, which is a kind of mix I like and I feel like the performance could be stellar... I'll put this on my 'trade requests' for future frames I'm selling and maybe pick one up for super cheap if I can. I'm telling you, it's a nice little sleeper, one of the best Yonnies I've hit.

Wouldn't a full synthetic gut or multi be better than gut? If you guys are in England - and I believe it rains there occasionally - the gut could be dangerous in those damp conditions and get ruined, couldn't it?

MD noticed a difference in the feel of his gut hybrid tonight just coming over from his dryer side of LA to my heavier, beachside air.

Interesting. I wonder how the frame serves.. Really hard to gauge with this wayward multi in it, but I will try some serves tomorrow before my match starts up. I could attempt to play my match with it but if I start losing then I'll be questioning the string so much. But that may be the plan, start with that to check things out, then go to the Prestige if I don't feel right. (Mad Dog has my PKs for restringing) ... And hope my legs and right arm don't fall off... the crux of demoing is you want to go out there every day to hit with sticks while you have them, but tonight I was feeling it.

Yes yes, but did you SEE Sean Hemmer hammer (trademark Sean Hemmer) that forehand down the line? It was disgusting. Believe he had a nice backhand in there, too. Granted, he's Sean Hammer Hemmer. But I remember thinking that the boys actually looked like they were hitting some pretty good balls, Chris included. For me, the frame lacks no power whatsoever. If anything it could be tamed a bit, but again, I'm hitting it with loose multi.

Been bagless for months now. Rollin to the courts with a trader joes bag and a ps85...just a drifter with beatdown vapors and 2004 nike throwbacks

Please don't ever change this. That is the goatiest thing I've ever heard.

Pure. Gangsta.

Just looked at specs: I didn't even realize the 200 was a 16/20! Bed is pretty darn open, though.

I have the new Vapors. Was happy at first -- the only Nikes I've ever been able to wear -- but it's been maybe three weeks and the rubber is starting to evaporate. Will be looking elsewhere for my next pair of kicks.

EDIT: nevermind. it mistakenly says 16/20 at the bottom of the TW review, but it actually is a 16/19.
