Davis Cup: Canada vs France

So were Pete's ...and look what happened with him
Oh, I wouldn't mind at all if Milos ended up having even half the success of Pete but don't forget they ended up changing the courts and the balls just trying to put a little excitement into the game after the era of Pete and the other big servers.

I'm a Rafa fan, and I became a fan way back when he arrived on the scene with his vamos's and fist pumps and changed the game in his own way. As a Canadian I'm pulling for Milos 100% and hope he accomplishes big things for us to cheer for, but while I'm patriotically rooting for him, I wish he'd let loose with more than his big serve. :p

You know, if they're going to have Betthauer commentate on Canada's matches in Davis Cup ties, you'd think he might learn how to pronounce the star of the Canadian team's name. It's not Ray-oh-nich you twonk.

Of course the serve has been key for Raonic..that's his weapon you silly commentators.

In Montreal I asked Bob Benetaur where the washrooms were not knowing who he was. He told me. I wish he learned to pronounce MR's name correctly though.

No respect for a Can commentator who can't pronounce player's name;s properly!

Raonic is playing this match like a top 5 player would...which I expect him to be by next year, if not in 2012.

Combination of atheticism and brainpower, He's got it all, and that's what makes a champion.

GO Mil0s.

YESS!!! He is playing doubles! Go Canada.

Let's not get carried away. Those guys at the top that he'd have to displace are not too shabby and I don't think Milos is quite there yet. If he could get into the mid-teens next year I'd consider that pretty good. Wonder what number Galo put into his envelope for this year.

Blanco is in Vancouver watching the tie. Just showed him on TV

I think it is BS that Blanco had 31 in the envelope....too many factors for that to come out right. Milos has a half season free to work his way into top fifteen!

good match
but I'd've liked to have seen him doing some S-V-ing, he will need that to keep Tsonga to be all over the net

This whole number in the envelope story is an old one. They've been talking about it since last summer and they both revealed their numbers were in the top 50 which was pretty brash considering where he was ranked a year earlier. Galo always hinted that he expected good results from Milos so I'm not surprised he had 31.

Well, he's got results to defend now which puts more pressure on him to keep his ranking up. On the other hand, because of his injury and surgery, he has none from hard court season so he should be able to rack up quite a few there. I think they'd be pretty happy if he could get to top 15. Top 10 might be a stretch but not out of the realm of possibility. IMO.

That was a good match. Milos played well against a very capable opponent. What amazed me was that Milos hardly worked up a sweat. His hair was still dry! Tomorrow's doubles should be a real doozy and Canada absolutely has to win that to have even a sniff at winning this tie.

You'd think that two guys whining about how Robert Bettauer pronounces Raonic's name would at least know how to spell his name correctly. :)

Not really. Bettauer is a nobody so I really don't care how his name is spelled. If a reporter was writing his name wrong in a newspaper I might think you have a point as it would call the reporter's professionalism into question. Bettauer calling a star's name incorrectly in audio media when he's supposed to be a professional is pretty mickey mouse.

Pospisil is going to get beatdown by Tsonga, but Raonic can definitely beat Benneteau.

If this happens, regardless of who wins the doubles match Saturday between Nestor/Pospisil and Llodra/Benneteau, the first Sunday match should be an awesome one, featuring Raonic vs Tsonga.
I didn't really go out on a limb, but just as I called it!

Raonic vs Tsonga on Sunday will be fantastic! Going to watch that one live too...

I would like to see Raonic play doubles with Nestor Pospisil's game seemed very weak yesterday.

Raonic is a very good doubles player and his serve would be a huge factor in a doubles win. Then i win on Sunday. Bingo!

Pospisil's game was very weak yesterday & I would like to see Raonic /Neator play doubles. Raonic's serve would be a huge factor toward a win, and he is a good doubles player and a huge (literally) at net. If they win Sunday will require only 1 win. Then bingo.

Playing doubles is not tiring like playing a singles game is.

I'm inclined to agree, as long as Milos is up for it and doesn't think it will hurt him for Sunday. Suppose Canada wins doubles, which do you think is the more likely reverse singles "upset"? Raonic over Tsonga or Pospisil over Benneateau? Before yesterday I was a bit unsure, but now I'm definitely thinking Raonic over Tsonga, especially if Tsonga starts feeling the pressure of an elimination match.

So they were doing the interviews after the US victory over France, and there were a couple of interesting things. First, when they asked Fish about the Canada/France tie and told him it was 1-1, he yelled out "Go Canada!" He quickly backtracked a bit and tried justifying his comment as because of wanting a shorter flight from Miami. Then, after interviewing Courier (who reinforced the American image by refusing a question in French), he walked away by saying "see you in Paris!". I didn't realize France was guaranteed this tie already.

Also, I don't know if the US could be so certain of beating Canada. Milos is capable of getting 2 singles wins against any current American, so it would probably come down to the doubles. With Nestor and no Bob for the Americans, that might be close. If Canada can somehow get by France, these interviews would be good motivation.

the right move for Canada and now they have a great shot of winning in my opinion. Llodra and nestor are the 2 specialist doubles players, benneteau is also an excellent doubles player, especially with llodra, but raonic is an imposing figure at the net and will be exceptionally tough to break. llodra isn't a good returner, benneteau couldn't break him last night, and plus he has the greatest doubles player ever backing him up at the net!

I was about to say that if I slumber (you'll notice if I don't post) give me a phone call, but then I realized that it's not that great an idea to give out my phone number...

this means R will be more tired tomorrow and next week ...

also, not sure how much experience they have together ... Pospisil has played in DC with Nestor

anyway, let's hope for the best

at least Pospisil will be less tired

Weird decision, both Pospisil and Dancevic are better doubles players than Milos. Not to mention that Nestor has never played with Milos.I guess the rationale is that they feel "power doubles" can win this. I'm not convinced...

Take heart. Raonic/Pospisil beat Nadal/Djokovic much to the delight of the Montreal fans,
