Rafa and Roger set for huge exho in July

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that as part of Real Madrid's 110th anniversary, Rafa would fulfill a dream this summer to play a game of tennis on the lawn of the Santiago Bernabeu. The event will be sponsored by the Rafa Nadal Foundation with proceeds going to both his foundation and Real Madrid Foundation.

Today, Roger Federer was named as his opponent. It will be a three set match and will take place on July 14 between Wimbledon which ends July 8 and the Olympic Games which begin July 27. The stadium holds over 80,000 people and additional seating will be set up on the field around the court. They expect to set a new Guinness record for attendance at a tennis match.

This is going to be a huge event and I'm getting excited about it already. :)

I hate these stupid exhos, but if it raises money then w/e.

It'll raise big money I'm sure, and all for a good cause. I imagine there will be a lot of tv money too. Rafa and Roger's exhibitions a couple of Christmases ago was carried around the world on various tv networks.

He did a promo in 2007 with Casillas on that stadium.

Id love to see another 50/50 exo on a custom court that is half dirt and half grass. Since exos are for fun and dont really count, may as well make them as interesting as possible. What better way to promote the wonderful tennis on non-hard courts. Anybody else agree ?

You don't expect them to throw clay into a soccer stadium, right?

Till Clarky21 says something about Nadal being stupid and managing his schedule badly before going right back to starring at topless pictures of Nadal.

LOL So true. Well, I don't know about the topless pictures part but for sure the schedule management. :)

I'd like to see it, but not here. This has special meaning to play it on the grass in this particular stadium, for Rafa anyway. But the clay/grass thing would be pretty fun if the two of them wanted to do an exho another time.

Well why not? Their regular matches on tour have long been exhibitions with no genuine interest or drama regarding the outcome.

Until it's confirmed I can't see Federer doing it. The guy won't even go skiing with his family in case he injures himself, I doubt he'd play an exhibition with Nadal that soon to the Olympic Games.

Hope this is not true. The last thing Federer needs is to start now with bad scheduling like Nadal.

Federer's agent denied the info. The opponent will be someone else.

Good. Federer needs to be in peak form during the summer.

Where did you hear that CMM? Do you understand Spanish? This was in one of the articles "Nadal es madridista y en cuanto le contó el proyecto a Federer, éste se prestó para jugar de inmediato." which was translated to "Nadal and Real Madrid in the project told Federer, he was ready to play immediately." but maybe the translation is wrong.

It's in dozens of articles on Google but they all could just be picking up the same story that went out on the wire. Even the Washington Post printed it.

Federer refused because he needs to prepare for the Olympics.

The other option is Ferrer? Really?

Good thing that Roger is skipping this exho. Wimbledon and Olympics are the priority.

They should try to bring Pete Sampras, he's as big of a name and I always wondered how they would matchup in a grass match.

Fed/Nadal on grass? I dig it :)

It will happen in the Halle final, MAYBE at Wimbledon semis and Olympics. Totally the wrong time for Federer to get 3 shots at Nadal on grass in one year  you have to laugh, 3 meetings in 5 ish years and now maybe as many in about a month.

Now Nadal has only made the queens final once, but knowing Federer is there waiting to lose to him again will spur him on to reach the final. Wimbledon I don't see Federer reaching the final of, so if they meet it will be a semi, same with the olympics.

An exhibition would be nice only if it was some fast grass. Not cos Federer would win, cos he probably wouldn't, but at least it would be nice to see fast grass.

It would be interesting if they matched up on fast grass, like the one in Sydney during Davis Cup. I wonder is it would make any difference to the match up.
