Mikeler's Multis

Many thanks to Fortun8son for sending me three Pro's Pro strings today. I could smell gluey goodness before I ripped open the package. Think I'll try the Hitech Multifibre last since it looks the least durable and with taxes still to do, I want to minimize stringing time. It does look exactly like MCS. The Gut Power looks the most substantial so I'll try that first and then Gutex Ultra. Will string those up after Klip Venom and Wilson NXT. Still have Boris Becker Pulse and Kirschbaum Multifibre (nka "Crispy Chicken") in my other 2 rackets currently.

Yes, it should be interesting.
The Gutex Ultra 17 probably won't hold up. I bought it to use as a racquetball string, but I thought I'd throw in a set anyway.

my hitec multifibre was a slightly different shade than the mcs, but they still do play very similar - i'm pretty sure you'll like it. can't yet say regarding durability, but i do not expect more than with mcs.

looking forward to your review of gutex, which you will surely get to play before me - i've got some shaped/structured mains to test and enough mcs at hand to cross them.:)

the gut power i can only get as single set in 1.40, and i feel that would be too thick for my liking. i basically rather take 1.25 on the crosses, if they don't stretch like the mcs, which strung is surely around 1.25.

MCS is EXACTLY the same color and smell as Hitech Multifibre. They both look more like 17g too. That being said, there were a few other MCS wannabes that I thought were the same but felt different in battle.

Has anyone tried Pro's Pro Claycourt Plus? I noticed it was missing from the list but sounds like an interesting one to me.

That was the Pro's Pro multi I was planning to buy before my new best friend sent me the 3 other Pro's Pro playtest samples to try. :) If I'm impressed with their brand in general, then I can promise you I will test that one since I play almost exclusively on a clay court so the name got my attention. On the other hand, if I'm not impressed with my free string, I still have some more ideas for testing. Viva la thread!

The Gut Power 1.30 is only in reel form and I do believe that the Claycourt Plus was the one that Big T recommended for mikeler. I did not buy any, alas.
The HiTec Multifibre also has the same limp, al dente feel as MCS. Price here is close too. Definitely worth a shot if MCS is unavailable or backordered.

to make it clear for the start, i'm talking nuances here! i felt the hitec multifibre is somewhat softer than mcs, which is giving the stringbed a somewhat softer touch, due to slightlylonger dwelltime i suppose. again i remind you that i'm talking nuances.

surprisingly i got less spin, slightly less spin and not so surprisingly also slightly less control. as opposed to the blackout / black code testing that i have done and where i said i could not tell them apart, these ones can be told apart, but i find that their performance is so close to each other, that most probably they would score the same marks in my evaluation.

For the 2nd straight outing, I had to play a "mercy" 3rd set just to play for a full 2 hours. My last 6 set scores have been 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4. I'm playing lights out with the Micronite now. So that probably means it will break soon. :(

Wow! It looks like this round of testing is coming up with some great strings. You might have to redo your rankings if this keeps up!

Mikeler- What tension would you recommend in a Prestige IG Pro, I believe the head size is smaller than the frame your using? Do you get much string movement with Micronite? And, are you planning on using it in a hybird w/B5E anytime soon? Thanks for your reviews...............

Put up a video of you playing

I can't compete with PVAudio's special effects. Perhaps one day I'll post a video.

Use your normal multi tension. Not sure when I'll use B5E again.

Is it the guy with the Wilson n6.1s? If so he is really cool and has nice strokes.

Lefty.

hey Mikeler just wanted to see you play you sound like a great play. I don't know why people have to comment on a simple post. If you were offended they way I asked I am sorry but up and comer needs to stay out of it

You're obviously the one taking this entirely too seriously. I just said that the way you asked sounded more like a command.

I don't appreciate the insults either.

Forgot to answer two of your questions. I may try Micronite as a cross if I go back to B5E mains. Have not really thought about polys much lately to be honest. As for string movement of Micronite, it is probably less than average for a multi.

Congrats on GOAT status, Mike!

It clearly confirms I spend way too much time on da boards! :)

Mikeler, I read the micronite is similar to gut . is that the case? Sounds like a great setup if someone has arm issues.

I have not found a multi that is truly similar to gut. Nothing has that controlled power and there is no better setup for serving than gut. Where Micronite is shining for me is just being aggressive. I have so much confidence with it. The other night playing dubs, I tried to blast a forehand down the line. I missed it into the net, but my partner said "I see you are channeling your inner James Blake these days".

Tell that to the other clowns I ask him to post a video and they felt the need to attack me. It's over on my end

I have a lot of respect for Power Player and have hit with him several times and we converse over e-mail. I also e-mail PVAudio and when Up & Comer becomes an adult, he will probably be on my e-mail list as well. So please let's end the name calling.

As for a video, I'm probably a strong 4.5. I've got an all court game and can hit every shot in the book. Since I had private lessons when I started playing, I think my form is fairly good when I'm not injured (which does not seem to happen much these days).

Micronite = MONEY!

OK, here is my review in the TW format of the Signum Pro Micronite 16. After I wrote this review, I tried out Discho Microfibre 16. Since I cannot tell a difference between the 2 strings, I'm combining the reviews for these 2 strings.

Strung up Signum Pro Micronite 16 awhile back. Stringing is very easy.

Tension it is strung: 60 pounds on a lockout machine full bed
Your regular string set up: Weiss Cannon Black 5 Edge 17 Mains(52#)/Genesis Thunder Blast 16 Crosses(56#)
Racket: Pro Kennex 7G (this is different than the others tested in the Babolat PST+)
String pattern of your racquet: 16 x 20
Power (or lack there of): Medium powered multi
Feel: Good
Tension maintenance: It drops a fair amount of tension usually up to 18% but it does not seem to affect how it plays.
Price: $12.50/set, $139.90/reel. Decent reel price.
Overall comments and feedback: See below

General: My first outing with this was lackluster. Conditions were heavy and did the string no justice. I did win that match 3 and 2, so it was not like I thought it was bad. After that, I played some incredible matches. The last 2 times out I felt like I was in the zone. Can't remember that ever happening 2 outings in a row for me. Results don't lie.

Serve/Return of Serve: First serve has some decent pop when my shoulder permitted. Kick serves were really jumping off the court when my shoulder permitted. Returns were mostly good, I had 1 match where I was missing a few too many.

Strokes: Good spin on both wings. Depth control is the best of any multi I've used to date. My forehand just became a monster with this string. There is nothing better than taking full cuts at a ball and hardly missing. Was also hitting great on the backhand wing on both topspin and slices. This string is better on defense than PPA I think.

Volleys: Another string that is very solid feeling at net. Was also good on drop volleys.

Touch shots: Good but not the best at first. They seemed to get better the longer I played with this setup and by the end I'd call touch shots great, but not excellent.

Softness: The string feels quite soft. Probably a top 10 multi for arm comfort. Considering this string is a true multi with no solid core, this is what I would expect.

Tension: Perfect for my game.

Durability: The strings are starting to get hairy, like Babolat Xcel. So far I have 12 sets of singles and 3 sets of doubles on it. This is misleading though because I'm playing so well with this setup, I've had many short sets. Will update this after breakage because this one isn't getting cut out anytime soon! Final tally was 14 sets of singles and 6 sets of doubles before I cut it out. WOW! See the pic below for what it looked like right before it got the scissors.

Movement: String movement was very little especially for a multi. KCraig would approve.

Conclusion: This string is so close to Xcel and PPA for one of the best multis. If I had to pick a winner between the three, court results matter most so it would be Micronite. Still think PPA is the best value multi there, but Micronite may be the best premium ($10 or more) multi I've tested to date. For my game, this string performs like X1 but over the entire life of the string.

^^ Stop! I don't need more motivation to test out multis. I though PPA would be it.

Haha. I can't help it. Funny that the most recent spate of playtests really produced nothing special except SuperCable Pro which is no longer being made then along come 2 in a row. Still have the Kirschbaum Multifibre on deck which seems to get a lot of love on the boards too. Don't think the Boris Becker Pulse will be at the top, but still have to playtest it so who knows. Maybe Klip Venom will be the next multi slayer or even a Pro's Pro offering...stay tuned.

I'm going to wait for a while until you finish this round and try out your favorite of the bunch.

Probably a good idea. I should mention that historically speaking, my best tennis seems to appear in the spring time. Warm and dry weather is just made for my game.

I would have a hard time stringing up anything else with results like you are getting with Micronite. Do you plan to keep at least one stick strung up with it?

These are all friendly matches so I'll probably finish my playtests and then go back to Micronite or B5E hybrids.

Some very awesome playtests. I stocked up a bit on PPA and will probably try it head to head against your top value multi and top premium multi, after this testing round is complete. And congrats from me too on the G.O.A.T. status!

I have lately used multis like Babolat XCel and Tecnifibre Multifeel on 25kg (~55lbs). What would be your preferred tension for B5E/Thunderblast hybrid to get about the same "softness"?

I will definitely put Micronite and PPA on my Futures list.
PPA appears to be the best price/performance value.
I am rather glutted with string at the moment, alas!

edit: Strung up another bed of Gut Power. Cheap racquet. Happy customer.
It's an odd string. It feels both stiff and limp. The outer shell is hard. No ghosting, but it will kink.
The 1.30 feels thick for the gauge. You may have trouble getting the 1.40 to go through the tie offs. At least it doesn't crush at the tip.

I have strange feeling that Micronite is overrated in your review. Its on market for couple of years already and this string is mostly unknown. I will get one set to try out.

From my experience so far the best multi is Premier LT - it doesnt move in 18x20 Rebel and plays simply wonderfully. I do not recommend si high tension as you string it. 23-24 kg is optimal. I had feeling as it played better when tension dropped after notching, just before it snapped (cross string in sweetspot snapped).

I use my multis at 60 pounds. In my Babolat PSTs, I was using B5E/Thunder Blast at 48/52 and in my current PK 7Gs, I was using it at 52/56. It's not quite as soft as the multis at 60 but 48/52 in my PK 7Gs had too much power for my liking.

Overrated for you, possibly. My results speak for themselves. When I'm beating guys at my level and they are only getting 1 or 2 games, that says something.

If you like Premier LT, PPA is a must try. They are very similar strings and PPA is a much better value. Keep in mind as you read my reviews that a multi at 52 pounds like your LT is going to play quite a bit different from the same string at 60 pounds.

These tests are even better because I'll be doing all gut or all multi for a while. I'm just too scared after my shoulder pains of a month+ ago...

Signum Pro does not have the marketing power and distribution channels that larger companies like Wilson and Prince have. It doesn't surprise me that a very good string from them would be a well-kept secret. PPA, on the other hand, will not be a secret for long.

If you like Premier LT, that's fine. We all have our own preferences. I tried Premier LT recently. I liked it, but I preferred PPA. They play very similarly but PPA is softer and livelier. I liked the way Premier LT played in the beginning, but it stiffened up too much after a while. PPA stiffens up also, but since it starts out softer in the first place, I don't mind it as much. It helps that PPA is much cheaper. I hope it stays that way.

I think the fact that Micronite is not currently being stocked by the larger US online retailers does not help it get much distribution here. Your LT versus PPA comparison is dead on.
