Stanford Men

I am very dissapointed with the Pepperdine match scores yesterday. I did not see the match but the scores were very shocking to me. I have seen a couple of home matches this year with the loss to Fresno being the last. I don't want to over react but it seems like the coaches are not pushing the right buttons to motivate this group. I know that the Stanford standard has dropped a little on the men's side but the lopsided scores from yesterday are a little dissapointing. I am not saying that the coaches should be let go but it seems something or someone needs to revitalize the program. Hopefully we can get our groove back soon.

People have an overexaggerated view of Stanford. This loss is not uncommon for Stanford. Losing to Pepperdine may be uncommon but losing to a top ten team for them is not. In recent NCAA tournament history, Stanford has only placed between Rd of 32 and Quarterfinals. Placing third or fourth in the Pac-12 this year would be considered perfectly normal for this team. Something to think about.

If you think the standard has dropped for Stanford, just wait till next year! Because Klahn and Thacher will be gone. Some good freshmen coming in, but that will be a young team with no elite-level guys available for #1 doubles and top two singles.

those new recruits you mentioned will be less effective than the team they have now..

Time to start recruiting foreigners!

How does #31 Santa Clara a week later lose to #7 Pepperdine by the same score of 6-1 that Stanford losses by, but wins more total games than #8Stanford. This is an interesting stat to look at:

SCU- Doubles won 18 games and won 7-5 at #1 doubles
Singles won 36 games and won 7-5, 6-3 at #5 singles

Stanford- Doubles won 16 games and won 8-7 at #1 doubles
Singles won 32 games and won 6-3, 6-4 at #4 singles

Santa Clara is #31 and should probably be in the 40's and Stanford is top 10. I agree Stanford is no longer one of the top programs in the country but this is a pathetic effort. Not to mention they barely beat Utah this past weekend 4-3. Not a happy Stanford Cardinal right now.

Stanford tennis is kind of like Notre Dame football. So good, for so long, but the game has moved on, the game is deeper, there are many more top players available (many of whom don't want to or simply cannot, for academic reasons, attend Stanford), there are many more great programs.

Yes, Stanford still remains a blue blood program, an elite program, with great tradition and a lot of resournes. I assume they will eventually win more NCAA titles. But, the days of winning as much as they used to have passed. The landscape is much different.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think SCU should be in the 40's?

I have seen them play twice this year and I would agree they have come a long way in a short time but I think they are a little over ranked right now. Just my opinion. It will be interesting to see if they make the NCAA Tournament.

But with the exception of one bad loss to Arkansas, they have beaten everyone they should beat. The issue that they are having is that Maxime Armengaud is out for the year with a broken wrist/hand. If he was in the lineup at 3 where he should be, and Vinel was playing 4, followed by Pham at 5 and Osintsev at 6, they would be in a better condition, but after wins against BYU and Boise St., I think they are definitely a top 40 team.

Also, despite the 6-1 scoreline, they played Stanford pretty tough at the KOW (even though the level of play doesn't factor into their ranking).

Woodrow, you make some good points. I was at the Stanford/Santa Clara match and was impressed with Santa Clara's scrappy play. Since they are missing their #3 I didn't think they were deep enough to be where they are at currently. It seems like you know the Santa Clara team better than I do. I will say that they have improved every year since the new coach came in and I have enjoyed watching them play over the past couple of years. Although I only catch about 2 maybe 3 matches a year.

I don't know if they will make the NCAA tournament though. If they can beat USD, then for sure I think. If they lose to USD, then they would have to win every other match, and have a good run at the WCC tournament. Pepperdine is the runaway favorite to win the WCC though, so SCU has to have a great finish to the regular season.

why do you say that? They are in good position in the rankings.

I'm just saying they can't have any major slips at the end of the year. They are not goin to get the WCC automatic bid, and with all the conference automatic bids, they are flirting with that area of bubble teams, especially if they have a bad loss or two near the end of the season.

After seeing today's rankings I can't see Santa Clara making the Tournament unless they beat Cal Poly and USD with no other losses going into the WCC Tournament. I don't see them doing this.

Stanford at #11 is a gift, I am so down on my team right now.

Reputation doesn't have anything to do with it anymore. The computer doesn't take that into account.

Stanford blew out the bottom of the Pac 12 this weekend. I am shoked how far UW has fallen this year. They are way over ranked along with Oregon. It looks like Santa Clara had a nice win against Cal Poly. Go Nor Cal South Bay:)

The Card go down to So Cal and get demolished in 2 straight matches. Come out of the weekend losing all but 1 match and a lot of scores very lopsided. It is starting to get ugly in Palo Alto and this is not fun.

They will beat UOP this week, then it could be a tight match with Cal.

I guess when they beat Texas in NCAA's that kind of answered that question.. You should show more respect to the mid-major programs...

I feel like I have always given Santa Clara respect if you follow my posts. I thought at the time they were over ranked but they proved at the end of the year they were deserving of a top 25 ranking. I was at the Stanford match in the Rd of 32 when Santa Clara played Stanford very close. At one point in the match I actually thought they were going to pull off the upset and get to the sweet 16.

On another note, I hope Stanford can stay in the top 25 next year. I think the lack of talent will really show next year. D Lin has to step up in his senior year or we could Fall out of the top 25 which would be a disgrace.

For what its worth, you have always been supportive of all the norcal schools. I just looked at SCU roster, there are 5 players listed, they lost a few there this year, anyone on the horizon for them? And the challenge ahead for Stanford is apparent, they have a bunch of bottom/bench players and huge holes at the top half of the lineup that aren't gonna be strong with current roster.

tball, I have no idea if there is anyone on the horizon for SCU. I checked out tennis recruiting and they don't have anyone listed as signed to join the team. Maybe they are going the international route for the new players. I agree that Stanford will have a tough time replacing Klhan and Thatcher. They have 4 recruits listed on TRN but it seems like they are just solid guys with no top of the lineup studs. It is crucial Lin and Stineman bounce back and have great years.

they're bringing in 2 transfers who played #1 for their schools this year

didn't really care enough to ask. can find out if you really NEED to know :p

Why did you make up the story of the transfers. Thats not cool, you now have no credibility. I emailed the coach, I met him several times and he said that he only has 1 transfer coming in and he definately didn't play #1 at his school. Glad I got the record straight

One of my buds knows the assistant there and that's what he was told...by the assistant. Maybe it fell through. Glad I got the record straight, was almost a part of a life-changing situation there. Precious forum credibility in question

Both teams took big hits from their senior lineups moving on and don't seem to have incoming power or potential at near the level they have outgoing. On paper Stanford recruited stronger, but I don't see any contribution from them this year. Freshman at top 10 teams don't typically contribute that much till second year & beyond, when they move solidly into the lineup or onto the bench, and this won't be any different. They are certainly not as strong at 1-3 compared to the last several years. They have a lot of players in the end range it seems, incoming and existing. So I expect them to struggle a lot this year without significant change. Cal lost some top dogs too and I think some of their guys can step it up while another or two seems the growth has leveled off, so I am not sure what to expect of them. (I'm not a fan of identifying players cause I think they are just kids working their a$$es off and I totally respect that effort). I have to think there is a foreign player hiding around the corner on one or both of these teams, don't you? Someone we don't see on the radar that will show up in January? They both need experience, not newbs, so we shall see!

I agree, Cal usually does try and bring in an international in January to help. I don't think Stanford can, but I see Stanford staying around the 25-30 mark because the guys at the top of the lineup will get killed. Cal should have a solid team depending on the new international recruits. Cal didn't get any real good american kids although I did here they were trying to get a couple of transfers. It should be fun:)

Former Cardinal Bradley Klahn lit up the 175th ranked player today in the Winnetka Challenger beating Israel's Amir Weintraub 6-0 6-4. Not a bad start to his pro career.

Have fallen hard. The new freshman are young but they still don't compare to the Freshman that UVA or others are getting and Stanford should be getting guys like Frank and Syslinger rather than guys like Paige and Strobel.
