The winner of the French Open will be David Ferrer

Based on what? There's no way Ferrer wins the French. Be happy to eat my words, as no one works harder, but let's be realistic here.

He's undefeated on clay this year, has three titles already, and this is the one slam he will ever win, or have a chance to win. As I said...his time.

I'd love it if he did, but that combined H2H with Djokovic, Nadal and Federer is 33-9, and he'll surely have to beat two of them back to back to do it. Federer and/or Nadal have been in the last 7 finals, and now we have Djokovic who's more than capable of doing it too.

First let see Ferrer win a MS1000 Clay tournament or Barcelona with Nadal in the field.

Ferrer can't take out Nadal...Djokovic will be on the other side of the draw.

Even if Ferrer win his half....he will be bound to lost an impossible Nadal.

It'd be really nice to see Ferrer finally win a major, but like others have said, first he needs to beat the Big 3 in a Masters 1000.

In 9 appearances at Roland Garros he has only made it to the 2nd week of the tournament 3 times and has never been past the QFs. As much as I like Ferrer I do not see that changing...although we will have to see how the clay season plays out. He has 3 titles this year but he did not beat a top 10 player in any of them I believe. The biggest name he has beaten on clay so far is Almagro...who is not exactly a fiend. Ferrer is an insanely hard worker with a lot of tools but he usually only seems capable of winning 250s. He has not had a big win at a major since the Aussie in 2011 and the last time he looked amazing at a big event before that was the WTF in 2008 (was that the year he went undefeated in RR and made the final?). I like him...but I seriously do not see it happening.

I tend to agree although I'm always mindful of Del Potro who beat 2 of the Big 3 back to back to win the 2009 US Open without beating any of them in a Masters first (he still hasn't done so).

Delpo beat Nadal in Miami in 2009.

He has 14 titles which include 6 ATP500s and 8 ATP250s. He has made 3 Masters 1000 finals, 2010 Rome ( lost to Nadal), 2011 MC (lost to Nadal) and 2011 Shanghai ( lost to Murray).

Its difficult to see him getting past any of the Big 3. He's 4-13 v Nadal, 0-12 v Federer and 5-8 v Djokovic (losing both encounters this year).

You guys do remember that this was the guy who predicted Roddick would defeat Federer at Miami, right?

Anyways, sorry jakemcclain, I just don't see it happening this time. Unless you can enlighten me, I see no way/indication that Ferrer can win FO this year. Do you see him beating any of Novak, Rafa or Fed (even Murray) in the latter stages of a slam? He's going to probably have to go through two of them just to get to the final.

Op is kidding. Would be cool to see him bag a slam against his countryman Rafa. Not happening though. Ferrer knows his place in the pecking order.

Well I want Murray to win it so sure, lets say Ferrer, equally unlikely.

I prefered if both played a HC slam final against each other. Both would have equal chances to win....may be boring....at least it aint Fedalovic winning.

Jake is playing with house money after his Nostradamian experience in Miami. However, I do not think his longshot will come in this time. I give Issie a better shot than the Spanish Terrier.

Ok, here it is.

First off, since January 10th of 2011 to now, here are some of his tournament results.

Auckland - Won
Aussie Open - Semifinal
Acapulco - Won
Miami - Quarters
Monte Carlo - Finals
Barcelona - Finals
Madrid - Quarters
Nice - Quarters
Bastad - Finals
Tokyo - Semifinals
Shanghai - Finals
Valencia - Semifinals
Paris - Quarters
Auckland - Won
Aussie Open - Quarters
Buenos Aires - Won
Acapulco - Won

Since that time, he's 83-22 with 5 wins and 4 other finals in 17 tournaments. He's been in 9 finals in his last 25 tournaments, and semis in three more of those.

People talk about Federer turning 30 and being that good. Ferrer's playing that well when he turned 30 also, and he's a clay court specialist.

This is his time...I truly believe it.

Del Potro was unlucky to not win the 2009 Canadian Masters. He crushed Nadal, then won a tough 3 setter vs Roddick, and then outplayed Murray for the first 2 sets of the final but couldnt close out the 2nd set and then had no energy for the 3rd.

As overhyped as Del Potro is on this forum, Ferrer is no Del Potro. Del Potro does have the weapons to win big titles if things all come together. Ferrer does not have the sheer ability to ever win a slam, barring a major Johansson like fluke. He is a very good and solid player, gets the most out of himself, and I like him alot, but not slam material at all. It is surprising Del Potro hasnt won a Masters, in Ferrer's case it isnt surprising he hasnt managed even that. Too many guys with much more raw ability than him. The top 4 even have a better defensive game than him, especialy Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray, and that is his main strength. His offense is limited at best. Also while he is a great fighter, he doesnt really have a champions mentality either, which is different than just a warrior mentality.

You really should have quit while you were ahead with that brilliant Roddick over Federer prediction. If Ferrer does pull off a miracle, I'll never question anything you predict again. But it's just not happening.

Even with the most favourable draw conceivable, he's almost certainly going to need to outlast at least 2 (if not all 3) of Nadal, Djoker, and Murray. In addition to being superior players with more weapons, these guys all happen to be about 5 years younger than Ferrer. If he had the offensive ability of someone like Federer or Isner, there would be a slim chance he could overcome his age.
But not with his grinding style.

Related question: when was the last time (if ever) a man aged 30+ won the FO? I can't think of any off the top of my head. Agassi won his at 29, so you might need to go way back.

Djoker goes without saying, but my point is that Ferrer's record is among the elite the past 16 months.

No way do I think Ferrer wins a slam on any other surface, but clay is his favorite surface, and best one, and it's his shot.

Andres Gomez was 30 when he beat Agassi in the 1990 French Open Final, and before that it was Andrés Gimeno in 1972 at the age of 34 (oldest French Open winner in the Open Era).

Then there was Rod Laver in his Grand Slam year of 1969, winning the French at 30 years of age.

Then there was Ken Rosewall who won it at the age of 33 in 1968.

Those are the Open Era guys as far as I know :)

Have you seen the French Open Champions in the past? Before Federer and Nadal, there were some great clay court players who won nothing else, or very little else, on other surfaces.

You telling me Yevgeny Kafelnikov is a better player, at his time, than David Ferrer now? Gaston Gaudio?

Yes, I think Ferrer's better than those guys, but I'm not saying he's going to win Wimbledon. I'm saying he's winning his favorite surface.

Kalfenikov was very underrated........He was way better than Davydenko with a similar game.

Better than Ferrer in my opinion everywhere except Clay.

Ferrer is better than Gaudio for sure.

But unless the Big 4 suddenly get hit by a bus in the next 6 weeks, what happened in the pre-Fedal era is completely irrelvant for assessing Ferrer's chances of winning today. Perhaps Ferrer could and would have won the FO if he was playing in the 90s, but that provides absolutely no support for your prediction of what will happen in 2012.

If you're so confident of this, I seriously suggest you put big money on it. Most bookies have him listed at around 30/1. Put a few hundred on him and you could wind up with $10K.

Thanks, that's interesting. So it has happened, but only once in the last 40 years. Even though it's remote, Federer may have a better shot of joining that list this year than anyone else in recent memory.
