ACC tennis

NC State at Wake Forest today 3 pm.

I think Wake has a shot at this. NC State needs to win this to ctop their slide and stay on track for the NCAA's. I will say 4-3 to State. Wake takes doubles, #2 and #3.

NC State beat Wake today 5-2. Wake won at 3 and 4.
Wake is decent at 1-4. They will be very good next year as all the new guys come in and move the current top players down to the bottom of the line-up. Not to mention Renier Moolman will be eligible.

Big one tomorrow. UNC and Duke. Picks?

Big one tomorrow. UNC and Duke. Picks?

Duke 5-2 or 6-1 if they win dubs
Duke 4-3 if they lose dubs

UNC always capable of some big performances at 1,2 if they play their best (like Brennan did vs Carleton this time last year), but I like Duke at both those spots today and too much depth for UNC I would hope

I think Duke wins by a minimum of 5-2. A 4-3 win would surprise me. I don't see anywhere that UNC should win, but 7-0 predictions are always risky because there is always a surprise at one position in college tennis.

not the most inspiring doubles performance by duke

time to have a little more pride in singles if this upset is going to be avoided

UNc runs away with doubles point. They rout Duke 8-1 at #1 doubles. Certainly makes singles more interesting now.

the interesting thing is that was the last dubs match to finish - so i guess some long games - but i still want to smack those two guys for that kind of dubs performance

3-2 Duke but UNC seems to have all the momentum. UNC up 5-3 in the 3rd at 6 and just took the 2nd set at 2 to force a 3rd set.

Unfortunate that Cunha has failed to get it done in both big ACC matches this year

Hopefully Mengel or Tahir get it done, this would be a rough loss after all the first sets

Great comeback from UNC. Dropping the first set on all courts. Away from home too. Epic win. This should put them in position to host in the NCAA tournament.

Very surprising result. I was beginning to think that Oystein Steiro (#6) was better than William Parker, and then they move Parker to #4 where he gets creamed. Burkhardt lost at #5, so it was not a particularly important lineup switch.

When you have to win four singles matches, and you take all six first sets, and then win three matches decisively in straight sets, it is hard to believe you cannot win one of the other three. But stuff happens in college tennis.

The Duke-UNC rematch in the ACC tournament will be interesting to see. Gotta think Duke will be psyched for that one.

Oystein Steiro vs Tahir must have been a reall battle. two very good #6 players. Tahir hits the ball hard and flat while Steiro hits a heavier ball and is more of a grinder player despite his size. In the end I imagine that tahir made more errors and lost it.

The more I look at it the more I think the ACC will be mighty strong next season. Virginia will be at the top again. And Duke will be even better, probably a national title contendor with the senior season of Cunha plus the addition of Redlicki,Levine and Semenzato(who could be as high as 3 on the team as a freshman). wake Forest will immediately go from bottom to toward the top. Their best 3 players return and Moolman becomes eligible, plus the addition of a stellar 6 player class, headlined by Ho. UNC will lose Hernandez and Boyajian but adds a pretty decent class of recruits. Brett Clark will be a player immediately. FSU should remain about the same, probably get a little better. Clemson will lose nobody in the top 6 and ass Austin Ansari, will be better. The only team that will get noticeably worse is Virginia tech who will likely be the bottom feader next year(not counting BC). I potentially see 7-8 top 40 teams next year.

UNC will lose Hernandez and Boyajian but adds a pretty decent class of recruits.

Jose is a junior this year. Unless you know something, he should be back next year.

Brennan, Cameron Ahari, and Joey Burkhart are the three seniors with significant playing time that will have used their eligibility after this season.

Congrats to the Heels on a tremendous come from behind victory today!

Friday ACC action:

Duke at Maryland - Duke 7-0
Miami at Virginia Tech - VT 4-3
FSU at Virginia - 6-1 Virginia
Georgia Tech at NC State - NC State 4-3. GT can likely pull the upset but I feel like NC State will put in an extra effort to secure a tournament birth as they are right on the bubble.
Clemson at Wake Forest - Clemson 5-2.

Clemson def Wake 4-3. Rigsby was down 5-7 1-3 and would only lose one more game to clinch

NC State def GT 4-3. Great win from Hodgson vs Spir. Staved off some match points.

VT def Miami 6-1.

Virginia def FSU 4-3. FSU won at 4-6, without Bucaro in the line-up. Not good news for UVA. They are starting to look vulnerable at the bottom. Courtney is having a hard time coming back to his form.

Duke def Maryland 5-2. Vlad Stefan routined Mengel somehow.

Last day of regular season today, lots of positioning to be determined.

standings:

Virginia 10-0
North Carolina 9-1
Duke 8-2
Florida State 7-3
Virginia Tech 6-4
Clemson 5-5
NC State 4-6
Georgia Tech 4-6
Maryland 3-7
Wake Forest 2-8
Boston College 1-9
Miami 1-9

matches today(and picks):

Clemson at NC State - Clemson 4-3, Need doubles for sure.
GT at Wake - GT 4-3, will be a very close one
UNC at Maryland - UNC 6-1
Duke at BC - Duke 7-0
Miami at Virginia - Virginia 7-0
VT at FSU - FSU 5-2. Somen will win and one more for VT

Amazing day of ACC tennis. I see no posts about it but that dosen't make it any less of a day.

Wake Forest def Georgia Tech 4-3
Wake sneaked the doubles point with two 9-8 breakers. Big efforts from Lee and Prabakar clinched it for the Deacons. Hopkins also with a strong 7-5 7-5 win over Spir at 1/

Maryland def North Carolina 5-2
Biggest upset of the ACC season thus far. The Terps decided they would refuse to lose thier last ever home match. Dominate doubles performance started it off. Then Vlad Stefan capped of a stellar weekend after beating Mengel Friday he knocked down Boyajian Sunday. Perhaps a bit of hubris from the Heels after their big time win over rival Duke.

Virginia Tech def Florida State 4-3
Another upset. Somen battled past Kelly-Houston and Antun put in his best performance of the season. This win likely gets Vt into the NCAA tournament.

NC State def Clemson 4-3
From a neutral perspective this is what college tennis is all about. Two seniors(Sullivan and Pulgar) rallying to clicnh the win on senior day at home. Very very tight match. Doubles was won in an 8-6 tiebreak at 8-8. Clemson led 3-1 and looked for all the world to have it in the bag.

Virginia def Miami 6-1
Struggles at 6 continue

Duke def BC 7-0

for some reason only Jenkins winning appears in the UVA vs FSU match on the ITA site. So it was not in their personal records.

Thanks Clemson Tennis - good work!
Are you coming to Cary this week?

Yes I am. I hope to get my flip video working again so I can take some videos. I want to see more than just the Clemson matches. of course I will have to leave when they get eliminated. Which hopefully won't be until after we upset UNC :)

The depth of FSU becomes evident when you look at the individual records and the top strength of Virginia.

Im glad to see Zac Rigsby had the best #6 record of anyone(excpet Lock but he only played 5 there). Would not have guessed that would happen after his bad start to the season.

Fred Saba at 10-1 is impressive. And the only one he lost was the first one of the season.

ACC tourney starts tomorrow.

The ACC has been topsy turvy this year. But for some reason I am expecting a return to form for the tournament.

Tomorrow:

Georgia Tech vs Maryland - Terps in 4-2. Maryland has been playing with a renewed fire recently. Horny retired in their last match but should be ok.

FSU vs Miami - FSU 4-1. I expect a tough fight from Miami, but in the end not enough.

Clemson vs Wake Forest - Rematch of the match just 5 days ago. Exact same line-ups too. The must anticipated rematch of Dom Maden vs Adam Lee will be happening. I wonder how much of the bad blood will still be there. I pick 4-2 Clemson.

NC State vs BC - 4-0 the State

The Maryland guys are going to fight hard. You have to remember this is like an interview for many of them because they are going to be going to other teams next year.

By the way Adam Lee surges to the top of the bad sports list in the ACC. Always looking to start something. But he is also one of the conferences biggest fighters. Gives nothing away, very athletic and just gets it done. The kind of grit he showed is exactly what Clemson lacks. Like Fred Saba, not a great sport but who cares? He's 10-1 in the conference. You gotta be relentless out there with such small margains of difference, Clemson just isn't relentless enough. There is no killer instinct on the team, the closest thing you will find to it is Zac Rigsby but he can't carry the team alone. Meza can sometimes have it but today he did not. Wibowo certainly dosen't, in fact he may be the softest player in the ACC.

Vlad Stefan will definelty be a big pick up for any team. Their coach Spencer will also certainly get a job. He turned that program around quick.

I'm actually going to toss Maden at the top of the unsportsmanlike list (just behind Boyajin). He whines about everything and someone told me last week he took an injury time out vs Lee down a set 5-4 and 40 love, tough to beat that for bad sportsmanship.

I guess you mean Dom Maden? He actually does not whine about much. Everything he does is in response to what his opponent does. He never starts anything. He did take a medical time-out down triple match point vs LEE in their first encounter, but that was out of anger to what Lee had been doing all match. But regardless that was pretty bush-league of Maden. Other than that he did not have much the whole year in terms of sportsmanship and gamesmanship with his opponent.

I'll take your word for it, first time I've seen him play, just thought from the little I watched that Lee seemed injured but unless he was faking than he really was pretty clean and Maden could have just run him more and won the match without whining about so many minor things

I agree. I think D Maden has become too defensive, he plays so far behind the baseline. He is super flexible and fit but dosent use it right.

I think Lee was hurting but was milking it a bit. He was fine once the point started. And running Lee was not working because he has outstanding defense. I wish he would have tried some more attack oriented tennis though.
