Tried a multi, didn't like it

Tried some Gamma Revelation 16 at 62 lbs that came with my stringing machine. A joy to string with and seems like a decent string (though I never use anything more than 17g these days), but it just gave me too much power. I was drilling them long. Guess I'll go back to poly. Thinking of trying some Kevlar, I need strings that are dead, dead, deader than dead. :-?

I dunno about that. I have never really liked a multi. I have tolerated some though. My friend told me how x-1 biphase was an awesome string and how it would improve my prestige mid and everything.... BS!!!!! What a waste of money. I got no spin at all and all my strokes were going long. Had to change my strokes and flatten out my shots to get them in. I hated playing tennis so much that 1 week I almost smashed my racquet and would have blamed my friend for that utter BS he fed me. In truth we never actually ever liked the same string. I cut it out the x-1 and put in a full bed of poly. Never looked back.

To everybody their own. Wuppy prob knows his game and what he likes better then you. I just try things out myself now a days.

^You should try hitting with some topspin.

Agreed.

All strings, I don't care if they're polys or barbed wires will only give you marginal +/- spin. Hitting or missing shots is on you, not the equipment. Tired hearing people cry about "my shots don't go in with (x) strings".

Not liking a string is fine and we all have our preferences. But you don't make/miss shots because of equipment.

I agree. That's not to say I don't like one string any more than the other, it's just that I can hit the same shots with virtually any string, I just have a setup that feels the most well suited to my game. I do feel, however, that I could play well with almost any string, given that I could get the tension right.

Agree and disagree. I don't play the same with an 18x20 string pattern as a 16x19. Hence why I play with a Prestige Pro and not a Prestige MP. My ball trajectory off the strings is much higher with the Pro and I have to drastically change my stroke with the MP to get the same clearance over the net. Also, I hit the ball long with syn guts much more often than with poly. Again, I have to change my stroke. If I stayed with it for a long time, I would adjust eventually. But, the equipment does make some difference.

I play the same with a Prestige Classic 600 or a BLX90. I had to get used to the way the BLX90 feel during my swing, but it doesn't alter my own swing.

I play the same with a full bed of multi's, or a gut/multi hybrid, or a gut/poly hybrid. High tension, low tension, same swing.

I'll agree that because of preference, we instill confidence when using one type of equipment versus another.

But to say I missed a shot because I wasn't using my gut/poly hybrid, that's just me deflecting and being ridiculous. I missed a shot because I missed a shot. It's because I didn't move my feet. It's because I was indecisive. It's because the opponent hit a great shot and put me in an awkward spot.

The USA is prob the cheapest place on earth to try different strings, you should try more. Some people do like Gamma tho. I don't

You should learn to read. I hit with plenty of spin but x-1 is useless in that department. I got better results from syn gut in the prestige mid. Only way I could get the ball in with x-1 was to hit flat. But hey if u like x-1 more then poly, more power to you. I'm not trying to change any of your minds. I know what I like and what I'm looking for. Maybe multis work for you and I'm not going to try to change that. I like polys at 45 and I'm not going to push that on you. I'm just tired of how some people push what works for them on to everybody else and them claims its the player's fault because they have a different preference or game.

I had a friend start a whole despite with me on FB because he was looking at new racquets and told me he hated Head and he is going with another Wilson just because I use Head and hate Wilson. He always told me how Wilson was the shyt and I should change to his level of racquet (6.1 95). I never asked him about it and didn't care since it made a diff to me if he liked it or not but it was on my wall and I responded. Turns out he knew almost nothing about racquets and likes Wilson just because his teacher uses a Wilson and likes FED. He then explodes and goes WELL IT AIN"T ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT... ITS ALL ABOUT THE PLAYER (btw, just a reminder that he brought up racquets on my wall for no reason.) All this and he has yet to beat me in a singles match

I suppose the current world # 1 didn't get the memo, because x-1 is what he played with until recently. As you may or may not know, he hits with a boat load of spin, and certainly more than any of us here on the boards.

Good post. Glad you said it.

There are lower powered multis as well, such as MCS and RIP.
Multi is such a catch-all term that it describes strings as different from each other as Sensation and FXP.

But, with MCS and RIP being "useless" in the power department. These players must swing infinitely hard to even clear the net!

Trust me, I used RIP, and I had to swing really really really hard for the ball to go anywhere! Now that I'm using a gut/poly hybrid, all I'm doing is tapping the ball, and I'm getting outlandish power and spin!

Overnight, my average rpm per shot went from 50rpm to 2817.6rpm. With nearly identical exponential increase in power, average speed per shot went from 2mph to 82.4mph on my forehands.

I'm not basing what I use off other people. Also as you said he switched. Guess he found something better.

OP did say that the Gamma had "too much power".
I was just pointing out that power is not necessarily inherent in multis.

Point is, if you can't generate topspin with x-1, then you can't generate topspin with any string. Topspin comes from your angle of approach to the ball, not from string or racquets, or your cool shoes.

Tell that to Shaq! LOL.
Too bad there is no equivalent to the penalty shot in tennis. 8)

Well, I guess there is. The Chair just takes the point from you.
I can see Serena now. Famous tantrum.

drakulie, what tension do you recommend for Black Code 17 on Head Microgel Prestige Mid and Mid+ ?

Have you tried low tension??? like 45?? May take a bit getting use to, but you enjoy the comfort and added pop/spin you are able to generate because of the high trajectory the ball leaves the string plane.

One thing I loved about the Microgel Prestige Mid is that it played great with nearly any string I put in it. really great frame.

Yeah you probably miss free throws if you're not wearing the best basketball shoes.

Shaq used mesh shoes. He should have gone with shoes made with polyester insoles.

He bugged me enough I finally strung it up. Had it laying around for almost a yr before I actually put it in.

Also, I'm so sorry drakulie. Guess I was wrong and I am not allowed to have an opinion in tennis. Because Novak liked it so much I should change to x-1. I should also switch to head speeds even though I don't like the feel. Guess I should also get sum barricades because obviously buying all these will win me a grand slam. ... let me know when you win your string, which is the only thing people should be allowed to use now

I'm not saying that the string made me hit them long, I'm just saying there was a lot less room for error for me for some reason. When I hit them perfectly they stayed in, but I don't have to hit them perfectly with poly. More room for error with poly, and I can swing pretty much as hard as I can.

If any of these things help you get spin and keep the ball in the court, then go for it, because you obviously don't hit with any.

I asked my stringer to do 47 since I use 57 on my NRG2, thanks for confirming
Yes indeed, Microgel Prestige Mid is the next best thing to PC/PT600, for some reason I like Mid a lot more than Mid+
I could not say the same about previous or next versions of Prestige series

That's a common observation, but like you said before, poly goes dead and becomes useless. Head RIP Control might work for you because it is low powered and doesn't die quickly like poly. If that doesn't work, you might want to consider getting a lower powered racquet. I know it's going to cost some money, but stringing poly every few hours will be costly too.

Very true! For me, going back to an 18x20 Prestige allowed me to use 17g multis. Every racquet / string combination is unique and requires some experimentation until you get it right for you.

i know some of you guys are ripping the poster for saying he couldnt play well with a particular string. everyone's game is set up differently. a different string or different tension could be devastating for a particular player. i don't think pro players would be so particular about their equipment if they were of the camp that those little details didnt matter. to each his own. some players don't care and some are particular. i dont think its good to categorize a person and say because they don't play well with a particular string that they don't know how to play tennis period.

Men tennis players tend to feel the urge to push on others what they like, how they think, teach others how things are done,...etc. It's a pis sing contest.

It seems to me that they are reacting to the sweeping generalizations that multi's are all bad or that a string generates no topspin at all.

We all have preferences and like to convince ourselves that the details make a complete difference in the overall performance when the truth leans more towards the confidence we gain from perceived factors. The only way to be sure it was solely the string or type of string itself would be to remove all other factors in stroke production and hit the ball identically every time. Sure, finding a string and set up you're comfortable with will lead to more consistent play, but it's really about individual preference and the emotional reaction to that preference by removing doubt.

IIRC you were stringing your polys at 62#s so given that a multi is going to be more powerful than a poly, you should increase the tension by +2-4#s for the multi.

sorry but I never liked multi. Hit harder with it but could not generate as much topspin with it than say the tourna bhbr
