We tried for Diaz before we hired Jackson and he said no then. Hope we ask again.

Well, go ahead and ask. I am not a Georgia fan and don't care. But it seems that you guys are really full of yourselves to think that you have your pick of almost any coach in the nation. If that were true, where are all the national titles in the history of the Florida men's program? Finalists? Indoor titles? Anything?

I don't mean to sound full of myself but we are known for our outstanding athletics at Florida and as you pointed out, our men's team is sorely lacking in titles compared to our other sports programs. I think that when you consider our resources, top recruits from within the state, and the year round nice training weather, it's a dream job for any top coach. I mentioned Diaz because he is known for his player development and that's what we really need right now for our current team and to bring in top recruits. Sorry if the rumors about Boland talking to us made you grumpy.

The posters claiming we are about to hire boland or other big names are not gator fans. Personally, I can't see why Boland would leave for anything other than a huge paycheck. He is clearly on the verge of the 2013 national championship at UVA. Why go to a rebuild project? Money is the only reason that would make sense...and I think it would take a lot of money.

I'm still convinced that we are going to hire a mid major HC or big time AC for the mens program. That is Jeremy Foley's style. The coaches at Florida pretty much all have that background.

The only thing I'm surprised about so far is that we haven't announced a hire yet. We have the flexibility to move very quickly since the UAA is separate from the University and doesn't have to deal with the state hiring policies. That is how we hired a head football coach in 2 days when Urban Meyer resigned.

I fail to see why a big name coach (Boland or Diaz) would even consider going to Florida. They've both taken their schools to the top of the game. Why would they want to restart somewhere else? Seems like their best bet is to get a coach that's proven he can win, but just needs the talent to take a team to the next level (which Florida should be able to provide).

100% agree

Florida does have their pick of any coach in the nation, sorry to break this to you but it's going to be top 10 head coach going there, my guess is Boland with Steinberg and Roddick close behind

I like the Roddick idea. Not only the name, but he played in the SEC and did a stint at FSU and UGA as an assistant. I imagine he could get into the living room of any family in Florida and get recruits to sign on his credentials alone. If he could bring Bo Hodge with him...bonus. Bring his brother to Gainesville in a couple of years...mega bonus.

i don't know, other than Isner, who has Diaz coached and developed?
have they made a living playing pro?

Not necessarily making guys into future pros. But taking guys who were probably bottom of the lineup players and getting them to max out their potential and become very good college tennis players.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we do really well at the bottom of the lineup?

Isn't what we need top guys to commit & stay for 3-4 years? To not transfer and not go pro too early for their own good?

I think we did okay at the bottom of the line up. There is room for huge improvements at all positions with a good coach in place. Yes, recruiting and keeping our top people needs to be a priority.

Jackson was fired. Folley was nice enough to give him an out so he could save face and still be hired somewhere. Most of the top 5 head coaches would be a stretch, though 500 G's may do the trick. I like the idea of
John Roddick or possibly Ramsey Smith from Duke, both are young guns and would be excellent for our Gators! We need a guy that has head coaching experience, UF alone gets the talent, we just need a guy that knows what he's doing, can keeps the good players, make them better and knows something about team chemistry.

I think they can pull whoever they want (outside of maybe Peter Smith), Florida is maybe the best job in college tennis, I just don't see an assistant getting that job

So, that must mean that Florida has always had its pick of any coach in the nation, because the factors that you list in Florida's favor are not recent phenomena, such as weather, junior tennis strength, etc.

That means that Florida had its choice of all the coaches in the nation a few years back, and chose Andy Jackson. Does anyone really believe that?

No way ramsey smith leaves duke. That's his alma mater and he seems dedicated to making that into a big time program.

You really think a tennis program would ever pay a coach 500k a year? Manny Diaz, in salary makes 177k a year (this number could be higher from other sources, but this is salary from the school. Info found from open.ga.gov). I have to imagine he's one of the top 3 or 4 highest paid coaches. I know it wouldn't be anything for a big school like Florida to toss around money like that, but I find it hard to believe they care about tennis nearly enough to do so. They'll get a good coach. But even if big money could lure a way a big time coach, I don't know that they'd go that far.

I'd say there is a difference between leaving Weber St and a powerhouse athletic program like Duke.

well said

lol, just got caught up on this thread, i love all these florida folks thinking they have enough pull to grab boland or smith

it seems the uva fans are about as scared as i am - and by scared i mean laughing

ramsey is building duke back into one of the best programs in the nation after a slight slip towards the end of the lapidus era - 1) he's not going to leave duke for a chance to coach even freaking djokovic the year his team finally has a real title shot - 2) he's not going to leave an athletic and academic powerhouse like duke for a purely athletic powerhouse like UF...if you guys haven't noticed he's not exactly struggling with recruiting people to durham, he doesn't need the florida location to bring in the best guys in the nation (and world)

keep dreaming

let me know what scrub you end up with, as i assure you i won't be following this story

i like the roddick idea, however

i would think they might be able to steal him, and that would be an impact hire for sure

I know it is is a long shot but I can see UF possibly offering the spot to University of IL associate head coach Marcos Asse. Marcos and his wife were both former Gators and he is from Gainesville.

I'd certainly want Roddick before Marcos, but yes...I could see him jumping at the opportunity to come home. His brother lives in town still and runs a nice gym here.

There are definitely other sources for Diaz and every college coach. Use that website and look up Mark Richt and it likely also shows just his base. There are bonuses. Plus, coaches get decent revenue from their summer camps, depending on how much they want to put into it.
It can be a big deal at a smaller D1 school. Those coaches (who also have considerably smaller bases) can double their income if they do enough weeks.

Are you kidding with Marcos, nice guy but he couldn't get the Cornell job, not sure he's ready to take the reins of the Gators....telling you, only a big time head coach, Steinberg, Boland, Tucker, maybe Roddick or R. Smith.....UF is sick of losing in men's tennis, time to win some titles

Going back to the biginning of the year, the rumor was that Jackson will be gone and Mark Merklein to be named the new head coach. So far 50% is correct, just waiting for the next ........

Tucker isn't leaving OSU for any reason for a few years. His daughter is in high school and she means everything to him and he is very protective of her.

Why would Boland want to leave UVA and go to a team that has much less talent and much less of a chance to win the NCAA? Money? It would have to be considerably more and tennis just doesn't drive those kinds of salaries. I would be willing to bet that UVA would come up with a match if it was about the money.

Ramsey and his wife bleed Blue. The only way he leaves Duke is if he is forced out, which isn't going to happen any time soon. Money isn't an issue with them so money wouldn't make it happen.

I'm not saying that Marcos is the most popular choice, but he has ties to UF and is a great assistant coach. I don't know how much he really wanted the Cornell job. Cornell has a beautiful campus but the academic standards that the school demands makes it hard to grab many of the top players, both foreign and domestic.

If Bresky wouldn't have jumped to WF last year I would say that he would have been the hands on favorite.

I could see Merklein leaving U of M for the spot. After spending a Winter in MI, I'm sure FL is looking pretty good again.

Steinberg is a great coach and it would probably be the perfect fit, but I can't imagine leaving Malibu for Gainesville. That being said, if he left for the same money it would be like getting a 60% raise right off the bat, and we all know that he would be getting a huge raise.
http://www.bestplaces.net/col/?salary=100000&city1=50645246&city2=51225175

And think of the bargain he could get on real estate:

Malibu, 90265...Avg List Price 4,915,330, Median Sale 932,500
http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/90265-Malibu/

Gainesville, 32608...Avg List Price 237,561, Median Sale 143,000
http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/32608-Gainesville/

I would assume that a home for $300-400k in Gainesville would be about the same layout as one for $2.5-3 million in Malibu. But likely newer.

Steinberg to UF that is the word on the street

I've watched the Waves play over the last two years and like the way they play. Steinberg gets alot of mileage out of not much talent. I think he would be great for UF. I know we would start winning the doubles point everytime if he was coaching. I also think he would have no use for the Frenchies that are total baseliners, that come to the net only to shake hands. I hope we get him!

Yes, he's more of a baseliner. However, for what it's worth,
In the Team semis versus UVa, Fanselow came forward when the opportunity was there. He played much more aggressively than Jenkins.

Steinberg got a lot out of his team this year at the NCAAs. Had them playing with a lot of confidence. He can be more demonstrative after points than most coaches, but all in a positive way for his players. He seemed to do a good job encouraging his guys whether they won or lost the point.

.

yeah I was more responded to the "Frenchies" comment. Which is really nonsense, because the French style in general has a good amount of net play.

Just thought I'd point out that a HC just left his alma mater that he had turned into a big time program. It wasn't Duke, but it was a program with a team and individual championship during the coach's tenure.

For those that think people are loyal just because of a degree, don't fool yourself. There are always better gigs out there. When given the choice, people tend to take the better choice based on money, freedom, support, and resources.

No program is bullet proof...even ours at UF. Ie- if Texas threw a ton of cash at Roland he'd probably be a Longhorn.
