Interesting. Pate was a friend of mine before he went to Notre Dame as an assistant. Good guy and a very good coach. I think he played at Mississippi State University. Coached against him while he was an NJCAA coach. He's the real deal.
I would imagine that recruiting players to Tuscaloosa Alabama might not be the easiest thing to do given all the other great division 1 choices. Has Alabama ever won a national championship?
No, they never have. The list of school's who've won a national championship in the last 40ish years is pretty small (only 8 different schools).
Alabama really is at a disadvantage. Georgia is next door, and Tennessee and Florida are solid programs competing for the same talent. Both Mississippi schools are also very good. Plus, Alabama as a state doesn't produce that much talent. The occasional blue chip or 5 star, but nothing like Georgia or Florida.
As a life long Crimson Tide fan, I am thrilled Pate is gone. Most Bama fans expected him to be fired. His teams have consistently under achieved. His recruiting has also been inconsistent at best. I would love to have Hodge. He's a Georgia guy and that carries alot of weight with top recruits in the South. John Roddick would also be a good fit here. Dark horse candidate - John Browning from Emory.
If Ole Miss and MSU can be top 10 so could Alabama. Probably need to go the international route but could be a top 25 program. Bama needs someone that can recruit and use the SEC as a draw. It would take work but it can be done.
Yeah, Auburn was able to be a solid top 20 this year and they are in the state of Alabama.
^^^ now the question is :how did they fit a whole team plus a bench guy on 4.5 scholarships ..

You are talking about athletic scholarship money. There are other types of aid such as academic and need-based aid available, which frees up athletic aid for more players. Also, there is an assumption that people are only going to play on a full ride. Not necessarily true.
I really can't believe Florida hired shelton if they could have had Steinbeck or roddick. He's great on the woman's side but coaching and recruiting men, especially from a scholarship standpoint is very different. Huge risk, hope it pans out.
I agree. Women's tennis is not the same as men's tennis. I'm sure he still wtahces men's tennis and aunderstands it but too many tennis people think of the women's game and the men's game asthe same. Like ESPN where they combine players from each tour into one power ranking.
I think Steinberg would only (possibly) leave for Florida. He's shown that you can win a National Title at Pepperdine, coaches in a great location and he's already been the coach at Alabama.
As already mentioned, you would think Oregon would make a push. Most college teams already wear Nike. Guess it's hard to find guys on the West Coast who will play indoors much of the year. Ohio St./Illinois etc, can at least pull some local guys.
Clemson has so many former players in high profile spots, it's hard to believe they didn't ask any of them to coach after Kriese. Just to name a few, Jay Berger, who heads the USTA Player Development, Frank Salazar, who set up JTCC in College Park, MD (Kudla, Frank, etc) and the place where Kriese is now. Craig Boynton coaches Isner. There are probably 3-4 more former Clemson guys who (if named coach) could do a good job and be able to recruit some name players

Did Kyle Spencer end up anywhere?
Haha, you guys are funny. Bryan played and was a 4 time AA at GT and then went on tour for almost a decade. Then he coached pro players like MaliVai Washington and became a USTA national coach.
The only thing I will see as a challenge is keeping players egos in check dealing with 4.5 divided schollys vs a full 8. I'm totally confident that he can do that.
He is an assistant coach at Duke now.
My guess is that there will be quite a few.who is going to get canned after this season?
My guess is that there will be quite a few.
like who?
If I was the AD at these schools I would fire the coach for mens tennis:
Texas
Iowa
Arizona
Stanford
Oregon
Arkansas
Boston College
Georgia Tech
so you would fire a coach who has his team Top 20 in the nation.
Wow, just wow
like who?
Different schools have different expectations. You don't understand that?
Yea I hear ya. If your not first your last. Fire 'em all.
My guess is that Whitlinger (Stanford) and Paul (UNC) are in the hot seat. I don't see Center (Texas) being in any trouble at all.
OK, so put yourself in the AD spot. Do you keep Paul on for another year or two and let some other school take Tripp as their coach or do you hand the reigns over to the next generation? There is no doubt they will be much better next year, but every AD has to look at the future of their program. I guarantee you that Tripp will be offered quite a few head coaching spots at the end of the season and he has been very patient the past 6 years.I cannot see Sam Paul being in the hot seat because of one off year. They upset Duke one year ago, and have a good recruiting class coming in next year, including the #1 ranked recruit in Ronnie Schneider, with only one starter graduating, so they will definitely be better next year.
I'm sorry but their freshman and sophomores are not the top freshman and sophomores in the country right now so they are not going to stand up to any top 15 team for years to come. At very best they are #4 in the Pac 12. That may cut it at some schools but not Stanford.Likewise, Stanford is quite young and their best players are all freshmen and sophomores. I would imagine an A.D. would watch and wait to see how they do next year before worrying too much about this year.
