Hurt my back while serving

I was playing tennis yesterday and I had to stop because I hurt my back while serving. It hurts during the follow through, it's kind of in the middle right side of my back. This is the first time I've ever hurt it playing tennis, has anyone ever experienced this? I'm a right hander and basically I'm following through on my serve I feel discomfort in a muscle on my back. It's strange because this is the first time I've ever experienced this kind of back pain while serving; the back pain I've experienced before was lower back pain right in the middle of the back.

I'm sorry to hear your back is bothering you.

Hopefully this is something that will feel better fairly quickly with rest.

Do you do off court conditioning?

That sounds more of an issue with the shoulder/upper back than the lower back? Are you pulling excessively hard on your swing?

That might be the case, I mean when I follow through on my swing it's fairly hard and fast. It could be that I'm throwing the ball too far back and trying to hit my serves with more kick, doing that may have aggravated it. I haven't played in 3 days and I'm suppose to play tonight so I'll see how it goes. It does feel better though, it's just that it's strange because this is the first time I've ever experienced this kind of pain. I've experienced back pain before while serving but that was in my lower back while this is more in the middle right.

Yeah it feels better. I played USTA 4.5 singles last night and I felt it a little in the first 4-5 games than afterwards it kind of went away. The problem is I was cramping really bad in my entire abdominal area. It was a 2.5-3 hour long match with very long baseline rallies and once we went into the first set tiebreaker I started to cramp to the point where I almost forfeited the match in the second set, it was that bad. That was physically the toughest match I ever played, luckily the back pain went away after a while.

Sounds like you originally had a minor pull, then you compensated during the tough match and cramped you frontside.
Maybe the cure is to employ a different playing stategy. When you're injured, you end the point within 4 shots. That way, your injury barely shows.

I hurt my lower right back several times, all started as I had to quickly lift my 70lb Siberian Husky off the ground as she was going to eat a loose ****zu! Then a long car ride to Canada etc etc...last time I hurt it playing tennis was hurling my right side to a shot I could not get too, first time was while serving, was lighting strike and I fell as I could not put weight on my right leg...so I went to physical therapy where they focus on healing ICE/HEAT meds and exercises specific to the lower back...google that and u will find the schematics on them. basically this is goign to happen no matter what you do..forever. You can only ytry to prevent by stretching and warming up a lot prior to playing.
