Rule Question on a Let Call

And the math works out the same, so why does anyone give a ****?

That pretty much says it all. Calling ad in for 40-30 happens all the time. I never noticed it before I started this thread, but it is EXTREMELY common. It happened a couple of times this morning during a friendly doubles match (not by me, I've learned my lesson, even though I'm a "moron" and an "idiot"). I play regularly with a USPTA teaching pro as my partner and he didn't blink an eye when the server on the opposing team called ad in for 40-30 so I guess he's a moron and an idiot, along with the server of course.

like I said, its bein different 4 the sake o bein different

what tangible benefit does it serve?

none

U may as well call games 1, 2, 3, game as well. I mean it means the same thing so what's the problem rite?

People are clearly getting bent out of shape about this.

In my next league match, if the opponent is annoying me at all and calls 40-30 as "ad in," I'll stop him during his service motion to ask him when we ever had a deuce. ;)

From now on, any time anybody calls 40-30 as "Ad-in" I'm going to correct him and then act confused when he says they're the same. Every. Time. He. Does. It. ;)

Here's a question, what's the average age of guys calling it the "equivalent" score vs those who call it the actual score.

The only guy I ever heard who called 40-30 "ad-in" was 70 years old.

I play against people that use all sorts of weird nicknames for point. One lady will call 30-love 3-love. I tend to clarify that one in case she's using no-ad scoring, in which case the 3 means 40, not 30.

I've also played against people in no-ad round robins that call 40-30 ad in. Which really annoys the organizers, that think that court is playing ad games.

Coming up with weird scoring is a great way to get that extra half a second on a serve while the opponent is attempting to decipher what exactly you mean. While your opponent is figuring out how we got to add in after they won the last two points you can blaze a serve past them. That's why in an official match it's not kosher.

I've certainly never heard this type of score-calling at a professional match, and I've never heard it used at a competitive match in a league or tournament.

Maybe it's an east coast thing? I've lived and played up and down the west coast, never heard it here. Only personally acquainted with it because my grandparents used to call scores that way when I was a kid.

Good lord.

I played a seniors match last week, and one lady calls the score during games with numbers. Like, she would step up to serve and say "One Three." Geez-o-flip, that was confusing. She was forcing me to do something dangerously close to *actual math* in the middle of a match. "What did she say? One Three. OK, the one is 15, that's easy. What's the three? Um . . . One is 15 and two is 30 and three is 40, so she must be calling the score as 15-40."

It was so bothersome that I started announcing the score before she stepped up to serve.

I wonder if a roving umpire would address this if a player called for an official to make an opponent stop calling the game score as "Three Zero."

HAHA nice one

Is there anyone out there that actually doesn't know that duece means "two"?

Yea, it's an old French word. But, seriously who in modern English speaking countries doesn't know?

I've heard enough folks claim to be heading to "drop a duece" to know that they aren't just taking a leak.

Well "deux" is French for "two."

Deuce is an anglicism based on an older form of the French word for two, "deus."

It's "Deuce," by the way. "Duece" doesn't mean anything.

You may now resume calling other people stupid.

Had an old guy do this to me once. Really threw me off. I'm mean, I was literally thinking about it while I was swinging my racquet!

Good point. Henceforth, I will use math to call out the score. I can hear it now:

"OK, set score is square root of nine all."

"Good shot. That's five times six to twenty times two."

"In lieu of a third set, we'll be playing a 98 minus negative two divided by ten tiebreak."

You really think that compares to whether there is a difference between 30-all and 40-all?

Points for smarty pantness though. If you do this, please post a video. Would be interesting to see if they ask for a let. Possibly just to see where you are placing parentheses.

I majored in smarty pantness.
