My Take on Yonex Poly tour spin string

syke

has anyone played with the yonex poly tour pro?, as that on stringsforum recieved really good reviews aswell.

would like to buy these 2 strings, but got strings which last me for 2nhalf yrs

I prefer the PTS, feel and spin is better. Some say it plays like a poor man's Black Code.
I hope those 2.5 yr old strings are nat gut.

Cheers for the reply

We all want durability and if at that tension it's still arm friendly that will do me:)
And with 10hrs play so far who,s going to complain lol

Thanks Garry

do you think this string poly tour spin has more power than RPM blast ? What do you think ?

sorry mate ive never used RPM blast so i cant comment!!!!

ive just finished stringing a full bed of PTS in my 2012 PD and what a pain in the butt that was lol,
was my 1st attempt with poly and jesus it was like wrestling a bear with slippery skin and doing the crosses was absolute hell lol,
i just hope ive met the worst string to deal with as i dont want to be restringing that anytime soon.

right guys i played with YPTS fullbed in my 2012 PD

had a good hour and a half hitting with this in doubles/singles

i strung this at 52/50 and for the first few hits it seemed very underpowered but loads and loads of spin,i even added 4grams @12 of bluetack to help with a bit more power to hit the baseline as my shots were dropping well short and ended up being sitting ducks!!!!!

after an hour i started to hit better and better with this string, power was a lot lot better so i removed the bluetack and the power was just how i liked it,not to much and not one shot flew long as the spin i added dropped them in like dive bombers lol

1st serve was ok but lacked power, but the second serve (kick serve) was very good so am happy enough.

FH/BH topspin were great and as said they dropped into the court like dive bombers.

volleys/drop shots-now this is where this setup blew my mind,so much control on the volleys and the drop shots were killers, ive never played so well at the net and killed a point so quick.

comfort-well for a full poly what can i say,i suffer from TE/GE and wear a strap and not once did i feel any after effects,i no the strap helps but i felt nothing and again for a full bed of poly it was great.

im back on court (weather pending) thursday for a 2 hour hitting practice so i will add to my post if there,s any major issues,im very impressed so far so fingers crossed.

another little update on YPTSS full bed @52/50

ive put 6 hours on this string so far and its playing better each time!!!!
there is no notching and the strings are still snapping back as im still getting loads of topsin.

i can only assume tension loss has occured as power levels are up but this string is low powered from the off so when i restring i will drop to mid 40,s.

the power level really suits me at the moment and i havent lost any control
ive just played 2 hours of doubles and im still killing points at the net better than any string ive ever played with so im well happy.

my 1st serve,s power is up but i put that down to tension loss and my 2nd serve has plenty of pop on it.

comfort is still very very good as ive just recovered from TE and a sore shoulder and im keeping a very close eye on this string.

im defo liking this string alot and it suits my game (doubles) but if i was to be playing more single,s i would either lower the tension or hybrid it with a more a powerful main as its hard work producing enough power for those winners!!!!

Good review Gary. Looking for a new set up for my PD as the gut hybrid I had in there broke to quick for my liking. Have a syngut/poly hybrid in there right now which is ok but thinking full poly might be the way forward at mid 40's tension. The YPTSS sounds right up my street as doubles is my main game and I like spinny, firm strings. Where are you getting yours from if you dont mind me asking?

I have the PD set up as follows and now loving it. 5" of lead tape from 3/9 up to about 2/10 which is 5g total and 5g wrapped round the top of the handle to balance. Weight with 1 over grip is 338g which is just about right. Not measured the balance but similar to stock is my feeling. Plays beautifully with just 10g added. Had a match last night and no elbow soreness, having played 4 times this week. I was starting to worry as before the mod I was feeling a few twinges.

hi jim

thought i would update this thread as im seriously loving this string:)
and mid to low 40,s is defo what im going to go with when i have to restring the PD again and 6 hours isnt bad!!!!!,its firm but not stiff as a board and i think you might like it:)

i got the string from http://www.stringersworld.com/section/1646/1/poly_tour_spin...

sounds like youve done some serious playing with the PD lol
ive only added 4x4 inches of lead tape to 3/9 4g in total,i did add 2g to 12 but i could feel it on my arm/shoulder so took it off quick sharp!!!!

isnt it strange that adding all that weight and you dont feel a thing but in stock form its giving you a few twinges??????
i went back to stock and then had my issue with TE/shoulder pain but i think that was down to the added weight at 12!!!!!

as for singles jim my knees wont do it anymore:(
anything short or too wide i dont even go for them and as the people who i play with no that and thats what they do,does my head in so im playing doubles now and am enjoying the breaks at the net lol

thanks for reply ....i got 1 nat gut been around 2 yrs old -peformaxx gut - still in its packaging, so it be good to use, stringing it with co focus in 2 weeks time.

rest of my strings are poly sets and a few syn/multi sets,, got only sets no reels, should be fine to use, especially in england weather is good

Interesting that most people seem to be of the view that this string needs a breaking in period.

it sure does as when i 1st played with this string it was very very low powered, hard work to say the least lol

this defo needs to be strung low to get the most out of it or hybrid it with a more powerfull main/cross but im not experienced enough to comment on that or what string to hybrid with!!!

maybe someone else could recommend a possible string to go with YPTSS.

but i do like this string alot:)

I have only tried this string a couple of times and the first time was when I was experimenting with a bunch of different strings so I only used it once.

I just put a new set in my wife's racket and gave it a try and to me when this string is new it is as good as it gets, I will get to see now how it plays with some time on it.

But this is the 2nd time I have tried it new and the spin and control is off the charts, I just hope it takes a little while before it gains much more power. Because to me brand new this string is as good as any poly I have used.

Breaking in period? The YPTS absolutely does not need any of that..
The only string I know that needs to be broken in, are those dumb dumb CoFocus strings... :)

This string plays beautifully when freshly strung. Low powered, good control and good spin.

But... It does have a noticeable drop in tension after some initial play, resulting in what GarryClarke is probably experiencing... Trampoline effect.

However, even with 16 hours of play (I know... I'm too lazy to have them restrung), tension maintenance is pretty good after the initial drop. No TE or GE pain whatsoever. Just some loss in control and spin while gaining some additional power.

Seriously good strings considering its price.

Yeah.. It's perfect if you are using these strings for tournaments. Freshly strung, it's really good.

But if you're an el cheapo like me :), it's alright, still plays very decent after 8 hour mark.

i think i strung it a little high 52/50 for such a stiff racket that the 2012 PD is
i will defo be going 46/44 or even lower 40/38 next time out!!!!!

and again i did find this string got better with time due to tension loss
i havent seen any drop in the spin department after 6 hours of play and i have a heavy F/H topspin/heavy B/H slice.

for any one reading this thread this string is well worth a punt :)

I reckon a mid to high 40s would be nice and comfortable...
After an hour of play, it would have drop to the low 40s range...

For me, I prefer the slightly stiffer feel.

I just wish TW has this string in reel form. The only online retailer I found that has it is in Germany...

and as for a stiffer feel,i think the PD qualifies in every department let alone having a stiff string to match lol

to be honest i havent looked for a reel of this string in the UK as ive got a few more strings to try out 1st!!!!!

but dont you just no that you will end up coming back to this string lol:)

Really like this string, has tour bite kinda grip and control but with a fuller feel.
I strung it @47lbs and on a heavy wet first outing it felt underpowered but very controlled, could really give it a good hit, but in those conditions its a little hard going. So I attribute my initial bedding in period to heavy weather and the fact that I played straight from stringing which I dont usually do.

After that tho there was a small drop in tension which has stayed pretty much the same for another week or so. Control, spin and power seem to really come together in a great package.

Will look at the weather next time I string but mid 40's is pretty good in the 89t.

Cheers mate, have use SWorld in the past so will have to get some ordered. I actually prefer singles but all the league matches are doubles so no choice really.

The added weight at 12 probably put the SW at a level that made the PD swing too heavy, thus hurting your shoulder. I tend not to like weight at 12 either, much prefer it at 10/2 extending downwards and balanced at the top of the grip. Only problem with the syngut mains is that they move around, hence the move to full poly. Played a club tournie today albeit for 1 hour only at it started hailing! Bloody weather!

Hi jim

Shame about the weather washing your tournie out,and just as we get some decent weather too!!!!

Defo get some of this string as I think you might like it :)

And that weight at 12 was defo what caused my T/E and shoulder problem, shame as the PD was working well, but I'm never going to be a professional or play at a high level so why go and ruin myself for what!!!!

Very low powered at first but just got better and better the more u played it

The tension drop defo helps in the power department and after 6 hours of bashing its playing even better,I was wondering how it would play in a hybrid with something like power poly?????

The spin on it amazes me and it dive bombs in which amuses me to say the least lol

another 2 hours played (doubles) on this string so 8 hours in total.

its still playing well, spin is still good but not as it was when 1st strung!!!!
power is up as more tension loss and my 1st sever,s are like bombs
control is not quite as good but still killing points at the net with half volleys/drop shots.

the one thing that i do really like about this string apart from the wicked spin is the length of my shots, hardly any of them go long and they always seem to drop right on the baseline which catches opponents out as they expect them to go long.

comfort is as good as it was at 6 hours so this string defo need to be strung low mid to low 40,s

i would like to hybrid this string with a syngut but i just cannot see it being as good or any better than being in a full bed,but im going to try it out of curiousity.

and again im seriously loving this string:)

Why does it need to be strung in the low to mid 40's? I use poly at a lot higher tension than that and this string played fine at high tension for me.

I just received 4 sets of this string so I will be able to give it a good test in the next few days.

i was using black excel @56
then pro's pro blackout/pro's pro syngut @ 50/55

both of the above didnt produce anywhere near the spin this string does or have that feel/touch/control
low powered i no but it gets better and better and just better:)

i strung it at 52/50 and the power level was very very low in my 2012 PD
i was hitting it with all my might and was lucky that it went half court!!!!!

if you have a few sets you can then play with tensions but my advice is to string it mid 40,s but thats upto you.

ive got a couple of sets left myself and will be cutting mine out soon.
im going to restring @ either 48/46 or 44/42 as i want to try and emulate this string as it was at 6 hours....

hope you enjoy the string:)

Garry,

My next set-up in the PD was going to be Blackout/syn gut. How did you find it in comparison to the full set of Yonex? What did you like /dislike about the blackout set up? I was thinking of a hybrid of blackout/intense heat to see what a shaped smooth poly hybrid would be like plus the black/blue combo would look cool in the PD, lol!

hi jim

my take on blackout/syngut was that the power side was ok a bit better than the yonex and i strung bo/syn at 23kg/25kg

control was no where near as good as the yonex and balls did fly off of bo/syn,i also had to rein the power side of my F/H as balls did go long not like the yonex im playing with now

volleys/drop shots where much harder to control/create and with the yonex it really is childs play lol

the spin side of bo/syn,well i found it hardly produced any and i play heavy T/S F/H,thats what i put down to balls flying long!!!!!

comfort wise bo/syn was good and like the yonex felt better as tension loss occured.

remember jim im a complete novice with reviewing and im trying to compile accurate info for guys like yourself, but i no that you might find bo/syn plays the opposite to what i think it does and you also might think the yonex plays pants lol

go with bo/syn for now and if you dont like it give yonex a try:)

ive now got loads of strings to try but i dont want to cut the yonex out yet and when i do yonex will be going straight back in but at a lower tension..

keep me posted on what you go with and how you get on

what do you guys think about power level of this string compared to Alu power rough ?

Not as much power. It's a lower-powered string.

But, when I tried it at 50 in my VCT89, it was flying everywhere. I need to try it at 55 in it to see if that tames things down a bit.

I like poly at high tension anyway and I am using the poly tour spin at 64 lbs. in my rebel 98 and it is really nice. Great control, spin and power, plus it does not feel harsh even at that high tension.

Having your own stringer is definitely dangerous! I have 20+ types of string all competing for my attention. The good thing with the PD is that it eats string quickly. I cut out the last hybrid i did this morning and the mains were 3/4 notched after only two matches. Enables me to get through some of my inventory! Let me know if you are ever interested in any trades.

Will be stringing the PD later then playing tonight and a match tomorrow so time to try out a new hybrid me thinks. Can't decide between full poly or a poly main/ syn gut cross. The syn gut cross might win the day. I have a nice 17g syn gut which should provide some precision on volleys/touch shots.

dangerous isnt the word for it lol,im trawling the threads for more combo,s to try with syngut/multi or full beds of poly/syngut/multi,s

strings seem to last me ages in the PD,notching hasnt happened in any of the strings ive tried!!!!!

all my strings are in sets as im not going to put all my eggs in one basket,
the yonex string is the only one at the moment that i wouldnt hesitate to buy in a reel, but i need to try a few more as it would be a crime dont you think!!!!

am on holiday for 10 days so i will try and get a few more hours on the courts, need to practice on my 1st serve as its been a bit hit and miss lately!!!!
and my mate who i work with is away for all of it so there goes my hitting partner:(
got doubles practice on saturday if the weather holds out and my tuition next wednesday.

like you jim i need to give poly/syngut ago!!!!,got forten sweet 17/pro's pro 130-135/pro supex/multi touch, want to give them ago in a full bed but i no they wont last 5 mins?????
im just enjoying the yonex at the mo and i used racket-tune after i finally worked out how to use the bloody thing and my tension is 39lbs after 8hours of play, wish i had checked tension when strung then at 4hrs/6hrs and at 6hrs it played its best so im guessing low to mid 40,s.

control was no where near as good as the yonex and balls did fly off of bo/syn,i also had to rein the power side of my F/H as balls did go long not like the yonex im playing with now

volleys/drop shots where much harder to control/create and with the yonex it really is childs play lol

the spin side of bo/syn,well i found it hardly produced any and i play heavy T/S F/H,thats what i put down to balls flying long!!!!!

comfort wise bo/syn was good and like the yonex felt better as tension loss occured.

remember jim im a complete novice with reviewing and im trying to compile accurate info for guys like yourself, but i no that you might find bo/syn plays the opposite to what i think it does and you also might think the yonex plays pants lol

go with bo/syn for now and if you dont like it give yonex a try:)

ive now got loads of strings to try but i dont want to cut the yonex out yet and when i do yonex will be going straight back in but at a lower tension..

keep me posted on what you go with and how you get on

cheers garry

On hols too next week but no tennis for me:cry:

Why not try Poly Tour Spin mains and syn gut cross?

I have black syn guts in stock so that will be my route once I get hold of the Yonex string. For now might try BHBR which I bought ages ago. So many strings, so little time!

what the mrs got you doing DIY?????? lol

i did think of a hybrid of syngut in the mains but thought it would be a waste of yonex!!!!!

BHBR is another string in my top 10 to try but when i will get round to buying it is another thing!!!!

God no DIY! know my limitations. Off to sunny (hopefully) Norfolk.

Could trade you for 1/2 set of the Yonex if you like? Only have 1 set of BHBR and will use 1/2 a set tonight. Might try the Poly Tour regular as well as it gets good reviews on Stringforum. Let me know and I will get it posted before my hols. no worries if not interested in trading:)

Meaghan,

As you have played with both the PP Blackout and YPTS how would you compare the two in terms of power/spin production/ tension maintenance and most importantly, control?

Thanks.

Were you a Sergeant Major in a former life!

Should I drop and do 50 for suggesting such a thing?! Lol.

You are right sir! Will take the plunge and order some up forthwith.

It will be waiting for me when I get back.

For now i have the dilemma whether to do Blackout or BHBR mains as my PD is currently stringless and I have a match tomorrow.

we are used to crap weather when on holiday. At least we aren't in a tent like usual!

looks like the Poly Tour SPIN bandwagon is filling up now.

Since I used this string the first session I knew it was great, I had used many Luxilon, Babolat and Tecnifibre Black Code, I almost never use(d) cheaper strings (besides the YPTSpin hehe) or from smaller brands, with my experience with these strings I chose the Yonex Poly Tour Spin which matches perfectly my Ezone Xi, but this string outperforms overall any of the others, it is very high quality for nothing.

Yonex has done a great job, I'm almost saying you can't go wrong with Yonex, shoes, racquets, grips, shirts and now strings, what else can they do for us tennis players??
