Build a roof already

We keep hearing lame excuses I don't buy the land can't bear it. Total BS. Hong Kong built and entire airport on reclaimed land. The have the biggest collection of sky scrapers not far from USO site in Manhattan.

If this was the US of a few generations past they would just got it done. Sign of America's decline. Reminds me of reading "That used to be us" by Thomas Friedman. Which talks of same thing "That used to be us" building the tallest buildings, man on the moon. Now they keep whining about building a roof on AA stadium. I need to vent every year about this.

Manhattan, it should be noted, is essentially solid rock. Queens is not.

That's just an excuse. Like I said many countries have build much bigger structures on reclaimed land let alone Queens which seems to have so man tall buildings. If they wanted to find a way they can do it. Just sick of excuses excuses ... Not the America I know

But, it's not a government public works project. Though "United States" is in the name, the USTA is a private organization. It's on them, not America.

That said, I really don't think it's impossible to add a roof to Ashe, but more of a cost vs. difficulty vs. disruption equation for the USTA. Of course, some engineering/architecure genius could design something that kept the rain out and wouldn't add too much weight, but I don't see the USTA as a "bold design" proponent.

Ashe isn't that old. They want to get more years out of it, and when they finally decide to build a new main stadium (5, 10, 15 years??), they'll add a roof.

I got sick of paying USTA I stopped my membership. All they do is promote geyser doubles Tennis. US Open is the biggest sporting event that happens in the NY area in terms of spectators. Every other Slam has a roof.

Those immense engineering projects built on reclaimed land you refer to were designed and built with those goals in mind. AA and the ground underneath was not designed to have had a 50-100 ton roof added to it. If you feel you know better than a group of engineers that have more information than you will ever have access to, by all means, drive out to the USO and pitch them your ideas. Otherwise, zip it.

I'm an engineer. This kind of acceptance of mediocrity is not what made America great. We built the Golden Gate bridge 75 years ago. I'm sure someone said the same thing that it can't be done but we did.

It may not happen now but there could be future plans using lighter materials.

Chris Widmaier, the USTA’s Managing Director of Communications, told me, “We don’t have a roof solution (for Ashe) yet, but we believe we will have one in the not too distant future.”

One plan, once the USTA is satisfied that the new materials are viable, would call for the upper bowl of Ashe, which is made of heavy concrete, to be demolished and rebuilt with one of the newer, lighter materials. The weight saved combined with the added weight of the high-tech roof just might cancel each other out, leaving Ashe with a roof but with no more internal stress or on-the-ground load than it presently carries.

Keep note that Ashe would also need a freaking huge AC system. Article says a room would raise the temps 15 degrees inside.

Cant build a roof then build a new stadium with a roof on it nearby !! The whole point of this stadium is to put on a show. If its not on Sunday most of the world wont watch it.

It would be more prudent to install a giant magnifying glass around the upper deck so those sitting there could actually see the match.

do a quick google search for all the Chinese infrastructures that are COLLAPSING or HAVE COLLAPSED in the last few years.

Please do not reference Chinese construction, and let the engineers worry about this.

Ashe will probably never get a roof built over it---too expensive. What a great idea, to build the biggest (23,000 seat) tennis stadium in the world. Bigger is better, right? Wrong.
You really can't see anything up in those nosebleed seats---the players look like ants. You have to look at the video screen.
And how come no one here has ever complained about all those sunlight reflections on the court from all those luxury box windows?
The only sensible thing the USTA has done in the past was tearing the upper deck out of Armstrong stadium....
