Durable hybrids

Hello folks,

As the name of the thread suggest, I am looking for suggestions for a durable and comfortable hybrid set-up. Been playing with multis for a while due to TE but need to cut down my budget for tennis. Multis last abt 2 weeks. Needs about 4 weeks from the hybrid set-up. NTRP 4.0 all court player.

Are the strings breaking in the middle of the string bed? About how many hours per week are you playing? What's your style (top spin, flat?)

I was going to suggest using Wilson's Red Alert or Head's Rip Control (16 ga.) Neither are multi's.

Also consider finding a local trusty stringer who can do the strings at a lower price point than a 'big box' store.

Or going with something like k l i p p e r 's Sterling or Pearl Zone (Multi's) as a main and syn gut as a cross.

Strings usually break in the middle. Mostly in the crosses with the Xcel that I have been using recently. My style consists of moderate spin with flat shots to attack..Play abt 8-9 hrs/week. And yes, I do have a small time shop nearby.They have been stringing the Xcel for me at a very decent price but breaking one every 2 weeks is just not helping my pocket. I did try a hybrid = K Spiky Shark/ Gamma Live Wire about a week and a half back and its hanging by a thread in the middle, literally.

I have a 4.0 friend for whom I've strung 2 racquets. I put Signum Pro Poly Plasma Hextreme on both as mains. On one I used RIP Control 16g as a cross and on the other I used Prince Premier Attack 16g as a cross. Both have been holding up for months (he should have restrung them a long time ago, but he has tough arms).

From my own experience, RIP Control and Prince Premier Attack in 16 gauge were durable multis in a full bed, so they should hold up well as crosses. I don't use poly. I actually found Klip Legend natural gut to be more cost efficient than multi because of the durability. If poly starts to bother your arm, I would suggest trying natural gut.

getting 16 to 18 hours with a multi in a hybrid is pretty good in my experience.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try RIP Control or PPA in my next set-up. Should I just leave the mains as it is ( K Spiky Shark)? I was thinking of going poly/polt too.. Soft poly like like Sonic Pro in the crosses.. Would that be any good ?

Hybrid in my Sig is great! I don't know how friendly it is for TE because I haven't had any problems with it, but it definitely lasts and plays great until it breaks!

Read some posts and I agree there's some viable options as a cross but if you're looking for an economical substitute, you could try something like Gamma TNT which saves some money on overall string cost, if you like the excel mains you could always try a syn gut cross, Xcel/syn gut hybrid will put you in that $10/frame for strings range so something like full bed Babolat addiciton may be a good trade off as well

Ive found that a hybrid of Weiscannon Silverstring and Pacific toughgut lasts and lasts and is pretty affordable and comfy. In fact I cut it out at 16 hours because the gut was really masking the deadness of the stilverstring at that point. I use silicone spray on the strings as well... that way the silverstring snaps back.

Looking at the price of sweet 16, I am really interested in this set-up. I was looking for a synthetic string too which I could put in my crosses.

I am getting 16-18 now. Was wondering if I could push this to 30+ hrs. How comfortable is this set-up ?

Good advice. Which synthetic gut would be ideal for crosses ? Use to break a full bed of syn Gosen in 1 week when I was a teenager but it might be different now that I am not hitting that hard.

i like duraflex as a cross but i have a lot of clients who swear they prefer babolats syn gut in crosses....Duraflex is on the stiffer side for syn guts ....anyways, most brands will suffice
