The "What's Wrong With Her?" Thread

Of the top four seeds (the others being Kanepi, Petrova and MaKiri), I'd say she is probably the least likely to take the tournament.

I'm not so sure there. Kirilenko might be the one most likely to win it. Petrova is too hard to predict while Kanepi missed a few months so she'll be shaking off the rust.

Wozniacki vs Kanepi for the Korean title..... I told you Wozniacki could win this. Kanepi is such a headcase I have no idea what she'll do.

Petra wins, Petra loses. Martic knocks out Kvitova 6-4 6-4 in her first match since USO.

Kvitova is almost useless outside of grass and indoors. Outside of Canada and Cincy, she has BOMBED at the Premier 5 and Premier Mandatory events this year. Would not surprise me to see Kerber finish in front of her at the end of the year.

Did anyone see the Radwanska- Jankoic match? Some of the shots jankovic was spraying all over (and way out of)the court was shocking

What is the matter with Jankovic these days? She seems to have completely lost her motivation. Doesn't she care anymore? If not, I wonder why she is still playing?

judging by the score and length of the match, Jankovic must have been hitting lot of balls in, 1h 36 min is not exactly a walk

Well, let's be honest: several years have passed by where no one on earth thought she was on the short list of potential majors winners. With each year, she seems like an older player doing one of two things:

1. Playing because she has nothing to do.

2. Still feeling the universal sting of being a major-less #1 (a period she should have put behind her), she's desperately trying to prove that she was not another career nobody.

I think the answer is somehere amongst the two choices.

Or 3. She still makes hundreds of thousands of dollars ($589K this year and probably more from sponsors) to play a game, so as long as the money's still coming in she'll probably keep playing, even though it's obvious that no longer is she not a major threat, she's plateaued and is regressing as the weeks and months and years go by.

I don't think she gives a damn ab being a majorless former #1 at this point, or else she'd actually be trying to improve her game, something that even little Wozzi is trying (and failing) to do.

Wozniacki scraps her way into the QFs over Li Na. I didn't see the first two sets of the match, but in the third, Wozniacki's defense was extraordinary. Li Na's overall W/UE differential was disgusting as usual but they both played well towards the end.

I think little Wozzie is improving her game. Don't think she'll ever be #1 again but she does deserve to be a top 10 player.

I noticed Serena is not playing, does anyone know why? Desperately trying to avoid that number #1 spot?

It's non-mandatory. Serena will get the #1 ranking sooner or later. She'll play Beijing next week.

they were parts off the match were she played some really good tennis but that would only last for a game or two then she just went off the boil and started producing more errors, made some silly decisions and getting broken pretty easy at love in some games

In other news Serena is considering partnering with LLODRA in her quest to complete the Grand-Slam Boxed set next year at the AO & FO.

She already has a golden slam in singles and doubles.

I read a comment that Aga ware so tired at the end of this match she could not even hit the ball out at the end of that match, is that true? was she that tired on court?

Li is a bigger joke on Asian events than Kvitova is on US hardcourts. In the 2008 Olympic SF vs Safina, Li made 70 UEs in two sets. She just does not want to play in Asia. She's more of a mess in Asia than Stosur is when playing in Australia. Ugh!!!

yeah she was, near the ending stages of the match (i think it was the last 2 games) there were really long rallies and after some points she was just trying to get her breath back, even walking to the net for the post-match handshake took a lot out of her

What else is new? It is the story of her career. She can't go a few tournaments in a row without retiring. Disgusting for a number one in the world.

Sets up a semifinal between my two favorite players, Agie and Kerber. Honestly, I wouldn't mind any of these four left winning the tournament. Stosur is due some results and Petrova back on form is good for the game.

At least she's trying to play a full season. Not a fan of Aza at all but I think she deserves the #1 spot more than anyone.

Petrova looks in the best shape ever but is her back back in form this week?

I didn't say Azarenka does not deserve the number one spot, I just said she retires too much in matches especially for a number one or top player.

Serena withdraws from Beijing with a flu. Suuuure. Hopefully she skips the YEC too so Li can get in. Stosur will most likely take the 8th spot since she's done well in Tokyo and is also planning on playing an event every single week until the YEC.

Yep, time to update this list...

It'd be one thing if she didn't have a HUGE history of 'strategic' retirements:

2006 Pittsburgh F vs Wozniack 2-6 RET

2007 Hobart Q-R16 vs Gagliardi 3-6, 2-5 RET
2007 Prague SF vs Morigami 3-6, 5-4 RET

2008 Hobart R32 vs Govortsova 1-3 RET
2008 Rome R16 vs Pironkova 2-6 0-1 RET
2008 Eastbourne R32 vs Rezai 2-6 RET
2008 Zurich QF vs Medina Garrigues 6-4, 3-6 RET

2009 Australian Open vs Serena 6-3, 2-4 RET
2009 Year End Championships vs Radwanska 6-4, 5-7, 1-4 RET

2010 Marbella QF vs Martinez Sanchez 4-0 RET
2010 Charleston R32 vs Mchale 6-2, 2-2 RET
2010 Madrid R64 vs Peng 0-3 RET
2010 Montreal SF vs Zvonareva 6-7, 0-1 RET
2010 US Open R128 vs Dulko 1-5 RET
2010 Beijing R32 vs Bacinsky 6-4, 2-2 RET

2011 Indian Wells QF vs Wozniacki 0-3 RET
2011 Stuttgart R16 vs Goerges 6-4 RET
2011 Rome QF vs Sharapova 6-4, 0-3 RET
2011 Eastbourne QF vs Bartoli 2-6, 0-2 RET
2011 Beijing R16 vs Pavlyuchenkova w/o

2012 Rome R16 vs Cibulkova w/o
2012 Canada R32 vs Paszek 3-3 RET

That's 20 retirements and 2 walkovers in 7 years on tour (3 a year). Granted this is her first retirement of the year, and she has improved (had nowhere to go but up after last year) but her reputation certainly precedes herself.

Ill give her the benefit of the doubt as this year she has pulled through a lot of matches in which she would have previously retired from (and/or had a meltdown). She has kept Retirenka in the closet most of this year!

She looked genuinely dizzy yesterday (though I thought she was fine in Rome and just pulled out to prepare for FO)

In all fairness, she was genuinely ill on some of those occasions. I remember her match against Serena at the 2009 AO. It was an intensely hot day and she just fainted while trying to serve in that 2nd set. She had to be stretchered off court and was taken away in a wheelchair. She was obviously suffering from sunstroke.

Some of her retirements may well be strategic, but she does seem to be prone to ailments of various kinds.

Not to be a hard-ass but no retirements by top players should be "strategic." If you think back to the great champions like Graf, Evert, Navratilova, Seles, you can never picture them giving up in a match when down just so they can be "fresh" for a slam. They fought every match hard. Graf for example certainly had her off days but she didn't give up, never tanked, and competed in every match. I just have to wonder about the commitment of these later generation players.

What I like about Radwanska is that she plays with her brains. She has a high tennis IQ. She knows her limitations due to her size and her second serve but she finds a way to win. I saw her play live at Miami this year against a young player who wanted to blast the ball. So Radwanska showed her a steady flow of backhand slices that stayed really low. She made the girl look really bad. And against Kerber, what other woman in recent history have you seen hit drop shot returns of serve.

If one of the big hard hitting girls is "on" then Radwanska stands little chance but most of the time they are not (except for Aza and Serena) and she wins. Unlike Wozniacki, Radwanska has other options than just get the ball back. You have to be on your toes to play her.
