Tsonga says the refs always favor the Big4 in tough line calls

Tsonga says the ref cheated him vs Djokovic and that he is always cheated each time he faces a top 4 player

"But I'm used to these decisions when I play against a member of the Big 4. I know that every time there is a difficult decision, it will be taken against me. It is a story of power, and this is how the world works. Sometimes it is not easy to accept. And anger rises very quickly ... "

Extremely bitter. Very much how the football managers here in the UK moan about decisions going for the 'big teams.' It's a meek excuse.

I didn't see the match. Is there anything at all to what he says?. I suspect not, going by his whining after the Miami match against Rafa a while ago.

I've certainly seen many times calls go for the big teams in football, but I don't think that's at all the case in tennis.
Much less with hawk eye in use...
He seems to be looking for excuses for his results.

line call is one thing,
but what about top 4 getting away with up to 10 seconds until challenge while the rest get 2-3 sec ?

this actually happened in one of the recent matches.

I like Jo - but he also once blamed a defeat on the ballboys being too slow!

After that, I would take any complaints about his perceived victimhood with a healthy pinch of salt.

First serve from Djokovic in the tiebreak. Called out, Tsonga touched it, but clearly unreturnable. Djokovic challenged, got it right, and the umpire awarded him an ace. Very subjective at this point, obvously. Could have gone either way.

Or rather, Tsonga's take on it is that it *couldn't* have gone either way... ;)

I saw the incident on Sunday, it was live on Supertennis channel. I didn't watch the whole match beacuse I had to go out but watched up to early in the 2nd set.

I did record the match so can check it again when I get home but if I remember Djokovic hit a serve that was called out which Tsonga returned into the net (backhand side) but was overuled after a challenge. I must admit I was expecting a 1st serve to be called and so did Djokovic because I'm sure he got two balls to serve again but the Umpire gave the point to Djokovic which is when Tsonga protested. He didn't overdo it with the Umpire just made his point very stridently.

You could argue the Umpire was in his rights to award the point to Djokovic but it appreared to me both parties were expecting a first serve / replay the point.

I will have to watch it again to see if I recall events correctly.

I understand losing to the same players in the later stage over and over again must be extremely frustrating but he seems to play this type of card too often for my liking.

Does he also remember those wrong calls in the opening set that all went against Novak and almost cost him the set in their Rome match this year?

Plus, Lahyani could be the strictest umpire when it comes to the hawkeye system with a late challenge or a situation like this.

I will have to watch it again to see if I recall events correctly.

He already said something to this affect about Nadal after their Miami encounter.

Sour grapes then, sour grapes now. This is becoming a disturbing pattern for Tsonga. The Top 4 don't win their matches against other players in the upper echelon on the basis of a few line calls. If Tsonga has a problem with this, there's only one solution: get better.

Jo has lost to Djokovic in the olympics, FO, 1 Master and now a final of a 500, that could be what's under his skin

Well, Mohamed Lahyani is a pretty bad umpire so this isn't surprising coming from him.

But Tsonga should stop whining, he gets owned by the top 4 and he should take the defeats like a man.

Its entirely plausible that umpires are more unintentionally indulgent with the top players.

This is basically what everyone has argued with respect to Nadal and Djoko's time wasting between points.

Yeah, but Tsonga is still fat and Lahyani is still a badge.

I thought Tsonga looked big on tv but in person he is extremely slender, or at least he was the last time I saw him.

There have been studies that have proven that the so called "home team advantage" when it comes to refs is actually true. If you don't think that the big four get favorable calls, you're either a fool or in denial.

Absolutely...with success comes privileges/favoritism others don't get. You don't think the calls went Michael Jordan's way most of the time when the game was on the line? How about Tiger? You don't think he was given a bit more leniency compared to others - at least before the fall :)

IMO he's in the top 4 with Lars Graf, Ramos and Bernardes

Actually no
(are you referring to the Bryon Russel alleged push in the 98 finals?)
Anyway, if MJ fwas favored by refs in the 90's just imagine in the current era...

Seriously, is he claiming that Hawkeye is biased in favour of the Big 4 too?

No, he is claiming the "out!" call distracted him and prevented him from hitting a superb return winner. Which he was clearly going to do.

I saw it live. The serve was definitely not returnable from his back hand. I think By the time he touched the ball, the wrong call also came at almost the same time.

Well to blame this on top 4 is totally uncalled for. Get better Tsonga if you want to beat them. Not cry on a line call which you would have not returned anyway.

I have seen even Nadal on the receiving end of such calls, so it happens to every one.

Maybe it was returnable!
Ball hits the frame, bounces on the umpite chair, goes through the window, hits a bird, goes back through the window, hits the net post and fells in djoko's side

Yeah. Seeing the video it's clear it wasn't returnable. He got as much of the ball as he could have gotten and the call was when he was hitting the ball.... this along with what he said after his match against Rafa in Miami - where an obviously injured Nadal still beat him - show how much this is just sour grapes... a little pathetic actually.

There have been studies that have proven that the so called "home team advantage" when it comes to refs is actually true. If you don't think that the big four get favorable calls, you're either a fool or in denial.

Those studies would prove nothing in this case. The element there would the pressure from the public on the referee.
I can remember a very similar call against Nadal, only that in that case it wasn't an unreturnable ball, so he had a much better case. Still, the call went against him.

No it's not. It's actually common sense that there is more pressure on the umpires when it comes to important players. Why do you think Rafa almost never gets called out for his time violations, while a guy like Cilic gets downright ROBBED of a set because of it? (got a time violation as he was about to serve a second serve against Federer on breakpoint, DFs and Federer serves the set out next game)

It's hilarious how predictable some of the posters here are. I think you are projecting your own pettiness on Tsonga. If Tsonga is so bitter, how come he didn't whine after he lost to Djokovic in Rome, FO and Olympics? It's almost like, he is saying these things because he genuinely has a reason to believe this.

Meanwhile, here you are, being the brave soul that you are and defend the guy who has achieved more in his career, because that is what courageous posters do.

This is nothing new in the sports world. Tsonga needs to stop whining.

If you actually read his comments, you would realize that he never whined in the first place. "I got used to this" is an expression of apathy.

Yes because clearly Tsonga implied that given fair umpiring, he would crush all 4 of them and that ONLY bad calls are to blame for his losses.

Thanks for that.

I like Tsonga but I think the Umpire made the right decision despite the commentators' remarks.

Lol, how did he get robbed?. He double faulted.

BTW, I'm sure Cilic also almost never gets called out for time violations.

Except we can actually see what he's complaining about, and he has no reason.

The issue wasn't whether the serve was returnable or not. The issue was that Lahyani ruled that the call came after Tsonga hit it. Tsonga said it came at exactly the same time. It's a tough call, but when it's that close, I think the benefit of the doubt should go to the receiver (Tsonga). But, the sound is slightly off of the video, so it's really hard to tell, and if the umpire feels that the call came after the hit, then it's not a "replay the point" situation.

I don't think Djokovic would have argued the call if he called a let.

Noah has more intelligence in his pinky than you have in your entire body.

Noah's claims can easily be substantiated. But let me guess, you don't know anything about that. You only care that he implicated the country your god is from. So he must be evil.

Never mind the fact that Spain has frequently been involved in doping scandals and nevermind that the authorities have interfered several times with the investigation. HE ACCUSED RAFA OF DOPING. (he didn't) How dare he imply that athletes could take PEDs even though they have everything to win and the anti doping measures are ridiculously wanting in preventing it.

Type this into google.

Besides I thought it was well known that Spanish police intervened in that one case of that doped runner and that they aren't very open with their information. If they disclosed their info, many dopers in the world would get busted.
