Federer and Finishing #1 or #2

If Federer finishes the year # 1, it will be the 10th time that the #1 player appeared in only one Grand Slam final during the year. It also happened in 1973, 1983, 1991, 1996, 1998, 2000-2003.

If Federer finishes the year #2, it will be the 12th time that the #1 player played all four grand slams and appeared in only one Grand Slam final during the year. It also happened in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997-2003.

Obviously what stands out is that from 2000-2003, the #1 and #2 ranked players each appeared in only one grand slam final during the year. Whereas, from 2004-2012, the #1 ranked player appeared in three grand slam finals in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. WOW!!!!!

How does your second statistic work? Djokovic would be #1, and he was in 3 GS finals.

Honestly Djokovic is ahead in the ATP Race by nearly 2000 points. He's going to finish YE #1 and Federer #2. I'm ok with that. I just watch Roger to win Basel & London.

I don't really care about Basel (but I'm sure Federer does), all I care about is the WTF. His 7th if he manages to win it!

It doesnt matter, Fed has already managed to do more than 99% of tennis fans ever expected him to be able to do. Reclaiming ATP #1, picking up GS #17, beating Pete Sampras's record at most weeks at #1 I mean.

His outlooks of beating/equalling 6 years at final ATP#1 look meagre right now, if not impossible.
I don't care about that - you just cannot always get what you want, surely not without a proper serve as became obvious in his match against Murray in said semi final in Shanghai.

Some Fedfans tend to be a mite too greedy me thinks.

He is too far ahead in points earned this year. Federer will end the year as the solid #2 in the world.

Maybe if Federer fails at the WTF this year, he could come back next year at the end of the year and sneak by with the #1 ranking? That's if he can stay ranked in the top four after losing his points from this year.

I'm content, but I still want him to pick up his yearly win at Basel and possibly one other tournament.

If Federer never wins another tournament I'm fine with it. He's done enough.

If he were to do any more, i would like to see him stop grinding lower level events (maybe start regularly donking out in QF's or something) and make sure the goal it to be 100% at maximum fitness and energy level for 3 of the 4 slams. Forget the French - that's not going to happen unless both Nadal and Djoker are injured and out of it.

I want him to play the AO and even more importantly Wimbledon and the USO at the absolute MAX effort.

I truly believe he only has real shot at Wimbledon and the USO - i'd take either one.

While I'd love to see another USO win, If he did nothing more than try to maximize his grass court preparation and get Wimbledon #8 I'd be thrilled

You are thinking of defending points for individual tournament and keeping it to a minimum. However, that logic only makes sense mid way through the season, when you are determining year end ranking you're better off looking at the ATP race which keeps track of points accumalated strickly this year.
