Cahill on Tomic.

All the inadequacies of his in-house coaching and training are now showing up and a change of coach now is good but already too late.

That's a creepy picture.

I find it strange that he is doing so poorly. It's strange because it seems to be a motivational issue (if you watched him at the USO you will know what I mean). What's stopping him from being motivated? He was just beginning to do a little damage on tour and then his momentum randomly evaporated.

And people actually believed Tomic could usurp Hewitt and or Rafter as the best Australian tennis player of the last one or two decades? He's talented, but he hasn't got it all there in the head. Hopefully he will, but he probably won't achieve anything beyond a short stay in the top 10 and some time in the top 20. And that's after Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray have all faded away. And he wouldn't be anywhere near the top of the 10 best players either, probably ranked somewhere between 7-10.

I don't think he will ever be a top 10 player.

At least he's got age on his side. A lot can change in three or four years so I think he'll be an interesting one to watch. Actually, I think by 22 or 23 he'll either get his head together and get himself firmly into the top 20 or he'll fade away from the top 100 all together, and we won't hear anything more about him. I can't see him lingering in the 40's and 50's year after year.

I don't think all the coaching in the world can instill the will to win and give your best, all the time.

Guy actually is giving you percentages of how much effort he puts out.

people are so hot and cold on these forums. No one knows what will happen with Tomic in the next 2-3 years. Him winning a slam seems very unlikely, but putting a ceiling on the kid is pretty pointless right now.

That said, since his Wimbledon QF run he's done pretty much nothing and since the USO loss he's just been awful. Appearing unmotivated as a professional athlete is one of the most embarrassing things a person can do. Go get a real job if this doesn't interest you.

Hes a pompous spoiled brat raised to have the attitude of self entitlement.

Like BrooklynNY stated all the coaching in the world wont instill the will to give it your best all the time.

One thing is for sure though, without dumping his ahole father for a coach Bernard wont be a threat at the top of the game.

Right now, he looks worse than Gulbis. He's gonna have to do a complete 180 in order to do anything of note on the tour. You see his name right now and you're a Top 50 player, it's an automatic blowout win.

Cahill is one of the finest tennis brains in the world IMO - Bernie should listen to him.

A lot is made of his QF run at Wimby - but I remember another teenager having a run to a slam QF in recent years - his name was Ernest Gulbis. I like watching him play - but is seems that he's lacking something at the moment.

I watched old man Youzhny just destroy him in Basel. It brought a smile to my face thinking of the Hewitt Wimbledon training incident.

This guy has tons of potential. If only he could fix his head, he could do damage. Hope it's not gonna be another Gulbis type story :(

could be it be a reason that he has a "tennis dad". a lot of kids in tennis, classic music, figure skating... are basically forced to train by their parents because they want to brag with their little star (worst example of this was certainly although no athlete michael jackson).

Often if those guys emanzipate themselves from their parents they lose interest because they realize their sport was their parents dream and not their own.

''Then we told Juan Carlos what had happened and his coach said that if a leading player in Spain asked a junior to practice and the junior said 'no', that he would never get to hit with a senior player again, they would make sure he had all his funding and support from the national federation cut and that he would be, in the coach's words, 'strung up from a tree by his balls'.''

So that's what happened to them ...

LOL, we will see. Talent is there. but his game is just too weird and old style. it will be interesting to see for sure. this one is hard to predict

Thought for a second you were talking bout the election there..

I think his game is good enough , problem is his stamina and mental consistency and understanding of playing on foreign turf.

tomic seems like he doesn't want to win at the expense of looking like he had to try. maybe percentage tennis and scrapping out points doesn't suit the picture of the player he is in his own mind.
but who the heck really knows?

Astrologically speaking, 2011 & 2012 presented the opportunity to prove himself - imo, he has.

Rafter/Hewitt caliber he is not, as stated above, he missed that bus. This shouldn't prevent an otherwise successful career.

He needs to get his head around whether tennis is the most important thing to him or not. He's at an age where he's trying to figure his life out (for now).

A trainer said the same thing to me at the gym. Then he gave me his business card.

Cahill is just a little short in funding for his new swimming pool he just needs a few more g's to get that granite bottom.

Interesting piece.
The comparison between Hewitt and Tomic at the same age is rather stark:

Perhaps you could investigate the comparison between Rafter and Tomic at the same age?

Pat was 22 before he broke into the top 50 and the same age when he won his first tournament.
(he didn't win another one for 3 years, but when he did it was the US Open!)

Tomic is 20, Rafter was ranked 293 at the same age and had never won an ATP main draw match at a GS or 1000s event..

His career turned out ok, though, don't you think?

I think the kid has some huge issues with his attitude, but I wouldn't go writing him off just yet.

Nah, I won't be investigating anything.
The comparison with one of my favourite players, Lleyton Hewitt and Tomic will do me just fine.
I haven't written Tomic off at all, didn't say I had.
Don't like much of what I've seen of him though.

I do think comparing Tomic with Rafter is pretty rough on Pat - after all Pat is a classic Aussie tennis player of the old school - he a worthy successor to the likes of Newcombe, Roche, Stolle, Rosewall, Laver etc etc etc... while Bernard Tomic is ... well ... Bernard Tomic.

I don't like his personality one bit. (Tomic, I mean, obviously, not Pat!)

I just think it's a bit risky to cherry pick career comparisons. I mean, Rafter was still playing when Hewitt was on the tour (albeit only barely) and has even played (a very young) Federer on the tour (actually, 3 times on HC, Clay and Grass for 3 - 0 Rafter!), so I don't think you can fairly lump him into some 'historic era' just because he S&V all the time.
