Racquets That Have "Jumped the Shark"?

I was curious to know what racquet iterations people think have declined or are just not nearly as good as before? If they have declined then what release or generation did this happen?

Ex: At what point did the 6.1 series, Prestige etc decline if at all? nCode? Ti?

6.1 series stopped being awesome for me after the Hyperstaff line. Ncode was okay, but after that it all went downhill for me!

Prestiges are always nice for me though. I don't like the FXP series at all, but even the LM has it's charm with the stiffer response.

For you what made the HPS awesome and the nCdode not so much?

-SF

I probably liked the ncode better than the hps 6.1.

Babolats went downhill when they added "cortex". I highly doubt that it does anything other than annoy me when I spin the racquet in my hands while waiting for a serve.

LM is garbage. It has no charm or redeeming qualities.

The volkl 10 series. C10 Pro was/is a great frame. Tour 10 MidPlus Gen 1 is where it peaked. The Gen 2 and V-engine werent as good (but still not bad). DNX 10 and Pb10 were worse and the current Organix 10 sucks in my opinion. They should just re-release the T10Gen1 MP

What is "jumped the shark" ???

(face palm, and eye roll). Even if I wrote that, I could identify that there would be no way anyone could come up with an idiomatic expression to make that sensible.

You mean "jumped the mark" And I know that wasn't a typo because "m" and "s" are way too far away on the keyboard :) I)

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm surprised they have stuck around as long as they have :0

I love my rebels =[

All in all i'd say the last good prestige was the microgel. Hefty beast. Really muted though. Reminds me of a Diablo Tour Mid. Hefty, muted, quick response off the stringbed, but nice if you're a big swinger.

Pro staff line... After the K for me. The K has such a nice feel. I actually enjoyed all the 95s in the prostaff line. Then all these muted sticks. Lost all the sharpness i enjoyed in every single previous iteration.

Favorite prostaffs. 6.0 90 & 95, 6.1 Classic, [K] 90 & 95, nCode 90 & 95. I've had a brief stint with the hyper carbon prostaff, a bit stiff for me, but i would have loved to mess around with some strings in that stick. The response was nice.

I can't quite comment on the prestiges as much siince i've only hit with each for about a day.

"Jumped the shark" is an expression that refers to an episode of the tv series Happy Days. Fonzie - one of the main characters, attempts to jump his motorcycle over a shark filled pool of water. After this, the series started going downhill, so this 'jumping the shark' episode was seen as the point at which the quality began to suffer. Since then, 'jumping the shark' has been widely used to describe any turning point at which things began to get worse.

It may not be a reference you're familiar with if you never caught the tv series.

It is actually jumped the shark -- unless its too late and I'm missing your joke. Anyway, Refers to a happy days episode where fonzi jumped a shark waterskiing. The show never recovered from that bit and it became an idiom for something that has exceeded it's run, gone on past it's prime, etc. One of my favorite idioms actually.

The idiom "Jump the shark" is derived from the episode of Happy Days when a leather jacket clad Fonz (Henry Winkler) jumps a shark while on water skis.
For something to "jump the shark" it means that the quality has deteriorated past the point of return. I'm borrowing the idiom usually applied to a TV series to that of any series of racquets.

Additionally, there are other similar idioms: Seeing leprechauns (Bonanza); Nuke The Fridge (Indiana Jones). We need one for Tennis racquets!

Love 'jumping the shark'. Try to use it as often as possible and love telling people how & why!! Anyway, back to rackets, Prince for me stopped being a major player when they started putting bloody big holes in the frames.

Well, still have a Shark MP from 2006.
The year after suddenly big holes jumped in it, and it wasn't for the better.

What's wrong with O-port rackets? I assume you're talking about the Prince line of EXO3 rackets. Personally, I like these rackets, especially the EXO3 Red 5. It has improved my game immensely. What is the specific objection?

I use Jump the Shark for a lot of refs, TV or otherwise.

As far as rackets go, how about "Handed off to Granny"?

The HPS is still somewhat reminiscent of the 6.1 classic for me, stiff but comfortable. The nCode has a different feeling flex to it when you really unload on the ball, not bad, just not what I look for in the 6.1's. That being said the K Factor is waaaaay too stiff for my arm. PSC/HPS are just made with the proper flex point/flex for me. :)

Haha! To each their own of course. IMO LM totally destroys FXP though. LM feels a bit harsher with more feedback. Obviously people who like the buttery feel of the prestige usually dont like the LM. I think it plays Okay though. That being said I much prefer the MG to LM. :)

We have a Turbo Shark MP and O3 Hybrid Shark MP. They play very similar, with Turbo having a bit more "raw" feeling. My Mrs likes the Turbo better, me the Hybrid. It's the matter of taste, I guess...

Totally agree (as far as MP goes). I'd pick up 5 if Volkl re-released the T10G1MP.

I still think the PB10mid holds its own and I can't wait to try the Org10mid when that comes out.

If I had to pick a racket that really jumped the shark it would hands down have to be Wilson's Hammer 6.2, the skunk These used to be everywhere (one of the best selling rackets of the 90's). Really popular racket, really versatile in the sense that it was good from all areas of the court and could be effectively wielded from intermediate players up to pro level players. There were a lot of descendants/variants - hypercarbon, stretch, power holes, not sure if there was a rollers version. The nSix-Two still was decent, there was a [k]Six-Two that I rarely saw anywhere, and I think the once-proud line went extinct after that.

I think marketing is to blame for its demise.... Since when has a pro played with a 6.2?

I can only speak to the 6.1 line. Some generations are better than others, but overall, I don't think they've dropped off. I haven't found a single one of them to be "unusable."

"O" ports are a ridiculous looking gimmick. Some of them play great despite the ports but even then they cause stringing to be slightly more complicated for no reason.

They are the least gimmicy of all so called "technologies" that marketing machine is bombarding us with... They actually are real.
Not hard to string. I string my own on a simple Klippermate and don't use boomerang or any other special device.
