The "What's Wrong With Her?" Thread

Petrova is a talented player, much more talented than Wozniacki but Petrova's problem has always been her inability to close out matches(she has been a head case in this area.) She has seemed to be a little better in this area in the latter part of the year. Hope she can keep it up.

Moving toward 2013, one has to wonder who will still dream of a Wozniacki majors win--and not one accomplished by opponent brain farts, beating themselves, upsets at the hands of others, injuries, or not showing up at all...

Caroline's best match this year was at IW against Serena, and even then the win was mostly a result of Serena beating herself. She needs to be so much more aggressive while also getting back to her peak defensive abilities. Not an easy task for anyone.

Who wants to hand out grades for the top 10 players?

Azarenka - A- (Still needs to work on clay, but an impressive season)
Sharapova - B+ (going 3-6 in finals knocks her down a little)
Serena - A (when she did feel like playing)
Radwanska - B (started great, had a not-so-great fall campaign)
Kerber - A- (could have done better at majors and YEC, but was solid all year)
Errani - B+ (great slam results, but just so-so at PM/P5 events)
Li - B- (winning Cincy was the only high point for her.. Error Na comes out too often)
Kvitova - C+ (her results at slams was a bit on the underachieving side, but she improved her AO/French/summer hard court results. She isn't ready for heavy scrutiny.)
Stosur - C- (from USO champ to going 2012 without a title. Like Kvitiova she doesn't like all the attention and pressure.)
Wozniacki - C (fell off the map which was expected. Tried new things in her game and finished somewhat strong. Daddy reclaiming control again.....)

Reasonable grades--but Kerber probably deserves a B grade, as she had so much (false) expectation for the majors placed on her, and I feel she was buying into it to a degree, but when it was time to go "all out," she failed in a manner not in line with what the expectation would suggest.

Regarding Kvitova and Stosur disliking attention and exposure...tough crap, ladies. They picked the wrong profession if they believe the isolationist/hermit/weirdo act is going to give them a psychological profile to stand on the big stage--to want to stand on that stage.

Perhaps it explains how both entered 2012 as defending champions of majors, yet they were uttlerly incapable of defending said titles (both the recipent of hype as the "answer" in Stosur's case or in Kvitova's, the "future of tennis/next big thing"). Graf was a private person, but she was no shrinking violet to the point of behaving like she cannot deal with the fact live bodies were in the stands, so when it was time to mow through the competition....the rest is history.

Kvitova has this problem to a great degree, so even if she manages to win another major or two, it is fair to doubt her chances to really leave a mark for herself in the annals of the sport.

Stosur's USO title seems more and more like a once-in-lifetime fluke, considering how she's played since. From my POV, she's somewhere between a C- and D+.

Then, there's Serena. While the A grade is fine, after an abysmal French Open (and the usual suspects questioning her ability, age, etc.), to come back, wipe the floor with the top players (including the defending champion) to win yet another Wimbledon, make history at the Olympics, beat the best of the new guard in a stunning display of inner strength/strategy in the U.S. Open final, and to top it off, win the WTA championship, I think she deserves A+ for the year.

I wouldn't give Serena an A+. She didn't do very well at the Australian or French, so not really much for 1/2 the year. We'll see how she does this year. Maybe she can win all 4 majors. That would be an A+.

She is only 22 years old and has a lot of talent. I think she will sort out her problems with fame or whatever and win more slams.

I think you have to give Serena an A plus. 31 years old and won two slams, two gold medals, and the WTA championships and defeating players 5-8 years younger than her in the process. Legendary stuff.

I would give Aga a B+, she was brilliant in the start of the year (Qf's Aussie, won SEO). I think the only player she lost to until IW was Vika. She had an excellent cc season, won Brussels, but ran into a red hot Kuzy at RG. Wimbledon she got to the finals which i don't think anyone expected, but sort of fell off until the Asian swing where she picked up her game and ended up making the SF of the YEC. Considering where she was at the end of last year, I don't think anyone would have expected her to have done this well.

Gotta leave room for a potential grand slam.

Yeah, but that's not likely to happen, but she is capable of the kind of forecful year she had in 2012, so all things considered, I think it was an A+ performance--one where she also made history which is i'm betting will not happen during the next Olympics.

Radwanska had a nice start to the year, topped off with Miami win and Wimbledon runner-up. She tailed off during the summer and was unable to defend either Beijing or Tokyo. Still a solid year for the #4.

Folks have been expecting more from Radwanska for about three years. Me and jones101 were harping on her to make a slam SF for once. She did well, but it was kind of overdue. Hopefully she'll take more steps forward rather than backwards.

Post French I'd give her an A+. She only lost one match during this time. But a first round exit at the french (where after her clay season she was considered the favorite) her Miami loss to Wozniacki and the AO (even with the injury) as well as her post US Open hibernation all count against her. She won a butload, but A+ means near perfect all year, Serena was not near perfect all year. The French loss alone lowers her grade.

I give her an A.

And kvitova deserves more than a C+ she had a better year overall than Li (she won the US open series, which even post olympics still means something). She made 2 major SFs (Li came no where near that)

Agreed, Aga did fall off post Wimby, but her year in whole has been very consistent with great results.

She had stagnated the last 3 years around the 8-12 rank, but was able to up her game this year in all departments. Its been a while coming and im glad she was able to break through finally.

Lol Im very glad Quarteranksa is a thing of the past though:)

Was just about to post this. Plus really, who wears a short skirt and some heels to go watch golf?

(Not that I'm complaining or anything)

Girl just craves the spotlight, big time.

I have to wonder who has thicker thighs between Wozniacki, Lisicki, and Kerber. I think Caro is adding weight.

The chunky thighs thing seems to affect to a lot of (female) tennis players. Her legs and figure looked much better when she was younger:

Adorable. Reminds me of an old tennis commercial that showed cats of various ages playing with a tennis ball. Then a human hand comes into the screen and picks up the ball, and the ad ends with the cats moving their heads back and forth while you hear "thwack, thwack" in the background. Ronaldo, you got to touch the Stanley Cup? Lucky!!!!!! (wonders if the NHL will get it's problems solved...)

I didn't expect this question to be that hard to answer. Perhaps someone can tell us.

Also if you're going to make a Serena fat joke at least make sure a.) she's still fat and b.) there aren't a handful of players that are fatter than her fattest period.

Tired of women's players being fat cows, looking at the juniors their are a couple of fat cows coming up as well.

I guess coaches are teaching their girls to fatten up and bash balls.

ugh

lol poor Tati :(

her last Us Open

And about players being overweight, in serena's case its not a problem because she is the fastest mover on tour. but if it is hindering movement, i agree that a lot of these women need to lose a significant amount of weight.
