Dunlop Ice: First Impressions

Well... It's clear alright... I would say its like fishing line clear. It feels like a generic poly in hand, doesn't seem like it will be to tough to string... Something else, it's DIRT CHEAP! I've found very little first hand experience from others. I hit with it once, but not in my racket, and with a racket I had never hit with before, so I have no reference point. I'm stringing it up tomorrow and hit with it Sunday after I hit the woods (yes, I'm a duck hunting tennis player, odd combo, huh?)

More to follow...

Also, I'm going to try a low tension string bed in one frame and a mid tension in another... Or YOU tell ME what I should string it at.

I was not a fan of the ice, a little bit too much pop and the strings moved a lot. Liked it for serving but thats about it.

I love how Dunlop released this string and didn't market it at all. I honestly had no idea it came out. For a string with its price, they should have definitely made a fuss. Truth be told, Dunlop really only needs 3 polys: a flagship, mid-grade and entry. In that order should be Black Widow, Juice and Ice. Right now, Explosive is at the bottom and it's simply woeful. Why they even bothered, I don't know.

Agreed, 3 is the magic number. And Explosive is abysmal at best.

Never even used Lux, I was disappointed but it is reasonably priced. My go to string is only $8 a pack though.

You're not the only one. I don't know what I love more my Dunlop 400 or my Faulk's bamboo duck call! Sorry, I never tried Ice but I do like me some Hexy Fibre

I went out to hit with it... It plays like Alu Rough, with a little less spin. It had some nice pop, a little less than the Kirschbaum Super Smash Orange, but more controlled. I strung up one frame at 55lbs and another at 36lbs. I didn't get a chance to hit with the 36, but I REALLY liked the extra pop. The power was controllable, with fair control. I felt like spin was lacking, but other than that, pretty good string for the price.

Hexy Fibre is some good stuff, I have a few packs of it... It sure smells like glue though.

Try the 36lbs ... then tell me about the spin it produces compared to Alu Rough :)

This string at that low tension will play very good for about 4-6hours, then you will notice some lost in tension.

Which thread is that? I saw your thread about Gamma doing away with their Ice line, but nothing about Dunlop.

I liked the 55lbs one a little more... I usually like my poly at low tension, but this I like at mid range.

How is this compared to other polys? Like MSV specifically? Im thinking about buying a reel. I need a good performing poly that I dont mind stringing every week.

MSV is one of the few strings I haven't used.... Sorry. Has a fair amount of control... Its like Alu Rough that holds tension... Buy a set and try it out, if you like it buy a reel.

How does this compare with bhbr, black magic, and isospeed baseline spin? I might want to pick up a reel if it as good as you all say.

I wouldn't say it's extremely spin oriented, but there is some spin. Moderate power, not too much. I can't compare it to much though, as I don't have much reason to buy strings that aren't Dunlop, although I have played with a couple other strings... Mostly multis though and a few polys... It sort of reminds me if Prince Beast.

Its a crisp string. Plays kind of like lux. Replaces 4g mains for me which is an accomplishment. The spin is really good for what i need. More importantly, the control is top notch.

Not to mention that the 4G is 3x more than the Ice...

Nice review folks.

If they are really discontinuing it, what are you guys gonna use?

Our Pal Zapvor got mixed up with the fact that Gamma is getting rid of many of their offerings and one of them is their version of ICE. Dunlop has just released their Ice.. and it is not going away. Therefore Gamma does not equal Dunlop. Maybe DD can come and clean out the mis-information. It can't be helping with the sale of Dunlop string products...:-( See POST #23..

Yah zapvor made a confusing post that barely cleared up what he said. Ice is actually brand new and is probably being sold right now at an entry price to get people hooked. I bet reels will go up to $80, but that is still a steal for what you get.

Dunlop has some nice offerings in their string line.. but they do very little to create any buzz around those offerings. They have some great price/performers. I used to play their Max Comfort multi which was dirt cheap..played crisp and offered great comfort. I think it is still being offered as Comfort Syn.. and it is like $5.50 a set? Have to look at the offerings from Tourna and Dunlop for some very nice strings.. before paying the big dolllars for string like RPM... ALU Power etc. If you really good enough to take advantage for the slight differences then go for it.

The Ice sounds like a great string for the price. If it made you move from the 4G.. it has to be a interesting string!!!

Happy Hitting..

It really is similar to 4G, but I think 4G is a little boardy feeling in comparison. And I'll pass that on to the marketing folks.

Can anyone compare the newer formulation of Cyber Flash to Ice?
In particular, which is softer/more comfortable, better spin, better tension?

Thanks

PP, if silverstring was as cheap as ICE would you use it instead? Or is it the value/performance combo of it that did it for you?

I strung up one of my Bio 200Gs at 48lbs. I liked groundstrokes a lot, but serves were meh. But when I hit my serves in, they were absolute bombs. Just not consistent enough on serve for me.

Pfft, who cares about consistency. Bombing in big serves on both 1st and 2nd regardless of percentage is what counts!

I could hit almost every serve in on the ad side... NOTHING (almost nothing) on the deuce side... I guess that's what happens when you get sick and don't play for 2 weeks.

I suppose I should call this the "Roddick setup".
