Hey guys. I have a lot of issues with my knee, I get sharp pains in it when playing as well as other day to day activities. I feel like it could buckle. I am planning on getting a MRI to see what is wrong but in the mean time, do any of you have any tips on exercies I could do to stengthen it? I dont want to give up playing so any advice would be great

I know, but a knee specilaist in the UK is a 6 month wait or a very expensive appointment that I can not afford. So asking if anyone could give any helpfull advice rather than negativity.

Honestly, without knowing your medical (knee) history, personal fitness and goals, playing style, the extend of the injury, even medical experts on this board won't be of much help because the injury needs to be examined.

Anyone that's going to give you advice here is likely to cause more damage than help because of all the variables I listed, and then some.

I'm pretty sure feeling like it can buckle is a sign you have a ACL tear. You should definitely stop playing and get that MRI.

Absolutely stop playing and go see a doctor. I know it's not what you want to hear, but it's not worth playing on it and risking further damage. That's the best advice you can get. We are not being negative at all.

You can get the basic knee exercises by searching the web for ACL or meniscus rehabilitation exercises.

My opinion is you should not play through joint pain and may want to stop all tennis and exercise until you see an orthopedist. Most say it is OK to play through minor muscle pain but you should not play through joint pain. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation until the pain subsides. Then start rehab exercises slowly - stop if pain or swelling is significant.

Cheers guys, not had a chance to get back on here for the last few days, Played on Thursday evening, very sore. Going to try and organise an MRI, I play on indoor carpet mainly, this causes a lot of sharp stops. Fingers crossed i can get it sorted. I am heavier than I should be at the moment, but the knee is preventing me from training properly! Never ending!!!

You mentioned that a knee specialist appointment in the UK is a six month wait.

Do you need to go to a General Practitioner to get an MRI done? How long is the wait for that?

Agree. No more playing until the knee has been examined by a doctor ... and probably for a significant amount of time after that. Rest, rest, rest.

A friend of mine, in his early 40s, had a similar issue. He kept playing and had to have knee surgery.

Hopefully you can avoid that baseline_monster. Just rest it and get to a doctor.

Thanks again guys, going to go in the next week. Basically in the UK, with the NHS what about 90% of us use it takes a very long time. You have to go and see general doctor who will normally refer you to the relivent doctor. The referal takes a long time, you can go private but it costs more than I can afford at the moment. To be fair, I has bad heel issues last year and they got my steroid injection done in a few weeks. Fingers crossed.

Probably best to wait, but the truth is, if you are heavy, out of shape and older, then stuff hurts. Buckling does sound a bit like ACL though. Could be the meniscus, and the flap locking the joint. Last study I reas, said 50% of men over 50 had torn meniscus. Get old, stuff breaks. I have had two tears, ones fixed, the other the surgeon just kind of shrugged and said, well, live with it. Honestly I just kept playing. Acl tear doesnt really mean you can do anything either, just a lack of stability. Usually you gut instinc will be the best indicator of whether its serious or not.

Theres lots of exercises for the knees ,some stretch, others strength, others rehab the knee, without knowing wether the injury is knee joint, muscles or nerves or circulatory system, its kind a shot in the dark, I'd treat it using hot and cold therapy and see if this works, if it doesn't, I'd lay off of it until the doctor makes a diagnosis and prognosis. Wall drills with limited movement are an option with knee brace.

I've had meniscus tears in both knees and the symptoms were what you're describing. You won't know until you have the MRI.

Compression stretches and constant icing after exercise should work to reduce pain. But it wont heal unless you go see a doctor
