The Petrova score makes no sense. I know Petrova is very erratic in her quality of play. I know Date-Krumm is an expert at redirecting pace, which Petrova will give her, but still.
Date-Krumm is 42 years old. I always thought that because she is so tiny, efficient in her movement, and the fact that she was off the tour for so long, she simply doesn't have that much wear an tear. In tennis years she's more like 32.
So, the fact that Petrova lost to a 42 year old isn't really the base of my confusion. Date has a minimal serve, Petrova has significant weapons. It wasn't that hot. How does Petrova win only 2 games.
BTW, Date-Krumm - back when she was just Date in the mid 90s -- was a fantastic, fun-to-watch, second-tier player. At one-time or another she beat most of the top players, and/or played them incredibly tough. She beat Graf in Fed Cup 12-10 in the third, and lost to Graf 10-8 in the third at Wimbledon. Made SFs at Wimbledon, French Open, and AO, and QFs at USO over her career.
