Apparently, Raonic couldn't even walk before the match

Raonic, the 15th seed from Thornhill, Ont., revealed after the match he wasn't given the green light to play until he was moments away from stepping on to the court.

"I had a tough day today. It wasn't as smooth of a day as I would have liked to have," said Raonic, who ended with 19 aces and 41 unforced errors in less than two hours.

"Until probably 45 minutes to an hour before the match, I wasn't even sure I'd play. I rushed over to get a quick MRI on my foot."

"I was having issues walking. I got the clear to play after that. I just had an anesthesia injection into my foot."

Raonic said he played while numb but managed to soldier on despite being diagnosed with inflammation in the joints.

"It was more how much it weighs on you mentally throughout the day when somebody is saying there might be a stress fracture," he said.

"I was able to actually clear it out of my mind pretty well before the match and just sort of go along with everything and just play as well as I could

So, what we saw from today's match wasn't healthy Raonic! People should stop judging this kid before even reading his post-match interview (well, the transcript is not up, that's probably why people still don't know the story)

At least, he showed up on court and tried his best with his injured foot when he couldn't even walk before the match.
Very comparable to Tipsarevic who would've withdrawn right away.

Not to be respectful to the Great Federer, but Raonic is such a classy guy for choosing to play this match!

I'm pretty sure almost everyone here didn't know he has such a terrible injury going into the match (most of them probably still don't know and are busy talking about Raonic's game). With his injury, he can still ace 19 times against Federer! (one at 233 kph)

It would've been a much closer match had he not suffered from an injury!

Some people will praise him for being a trooper.

others will say playing injured with medicated parts is unfair to his opponent when it should have just been a walk over.

I don't see how that's unfair, if you can play the match then well done to you..

and I am of the same thought...but there is starting to be lots of talk about is playing on medications for pain considered a form of doping ...since technically it is performance enhancing because without it you would have been unfit to play.

The latter, or the former with your mouth shut afterwards. Even Rafa (Rafa!!) had the decency not to talk about his knees being absolutely on fire during the FO or during any of Wimby until months afterwards. It is frankly rude to come out, play a match, and then go back and say "Oh, well, 45mins before the start of the match I still wasn't sure if my foot was broken..." It just makes you look like an idiot with a bag of excuses.

Exactly the point. Either keep your mouth shut or concede the match. Having played while drugged to the point of not being able to feel a possible broken bone is unfair to your opponent and makes you look bad anyway.

If you play, you're fit. If you're not fit, don't play. The old Aussie rule from the '50's. Still stands good today.

I don't think aussies of the fifties faced press conference after press conference where people were asking you about your performance.

People want to know what's going on and is he supposed to lie?

It sucks that he was injured, but if he felt he couldn't play at his best, he should of withdrawn. I find it a bit cheap to say these things after he lost the match, kinda like Nadal when he looses, we learn later that he was suffering from this and that and that...blabla, it's like they don't give they're opponents credit, and I find that disrespectful.

I've got this image of Raonic being wheeled into a press conference, covered head to toe in bandages and plaster, with a drip hanging off his arm, saying "No no, I feel fine"

Raonic showed some guts are fought through and gave it the old college try. Good on him. We could use some more of that pluck in tennis.

Excuses are excuses and facts are fact. If that was the state of his foot, there's no shame in being honest. From what I've heard he wasn't whinging about it; just telling the truth.

I don't think he meant it as an excuse but whatever, I hope it's nothing serious, the guy's very prone to injuries.

He would have read some books and given some thoughtful answers, and then retired.

:lol::lol::lol:

At this young age, he shouldn't be having such injuries. I am really not too sympathetic towards people who play sports and injure themselves.

Thats because as a club hack you never performed any sport at a level high enough to get injured. Your too slow and not fit enough.... :D
Walking about the court of course your not getting hurt.

But its different for ATP players. The make money playing.

Well put. That's all that needs to be said.

The press have always been around the players. Giving out lame excuses has become the modern way rather than simply admit you weren't good enough.

Well, I show up for work when I should. I lead my life in such a way that I can perform what is expected from me.

That should be true in any profession. If you are getting injured so early in your career, then it is a problem. Maybe you are not cut out for the sport.

If he had Isner's serve, he would have won.

No.

1. Raonic's serve is as good as Inser's, if not better. Just look at last year's stats on service (1st % won, fastest serve, % games hold, 2nd serve won %, etc.)

2. Federer has had no problem dealing with Isner's serve in the past, so your statement doesn't stand true.

3. Raonic has put Feder into trouble more than Isner has with his serve (look at the match between Fed and Raonic in Madrid, Halle, and Indian Wells. That's three different surfaces clay, grass, and hard court), so I would say Raonic's serve is more effective especially against top players like Federer.

That quick handshake he gave Federer at the net didn't look too "classy" to me.

If it's a WO the opponent doesn't get credit for a Win. Raonic was just being fair to Roger by opting to play the match.

Give me a break! This is amazing, my 12 year old son said "this guy will make an excuse after losing". Here's the deal, EVEN IF YOU DO HAVE AN INJURY, you don't bring it up after losing if you have any class.

This kind of stuff pisses me off, yet he only lost four times to Fed because of a injured foot, please.

That wasn't the same Raonic who faced Murray at the USO. Murray won in straights then and Raonic made no excuses there saying he was simply outplayed in the end but still put up a much better fight.
Raonic started off fine today but you could see half way through there was something not right.
And Fed also playing outstanding tennis just compounded everything.

Same as Simon vs Murray match.
Simon was too tired after winning Monfil. His body could not be recovered in time. He had many muscle cramps.

Remember the old saying "Believe half of what you see and zero percent of what you hear or read."

If Raonic is hurting, why would he give his Davis Cup opposition knowledge of a weakness? Or is he exaggerating the injury to make people and Federer think he was only at 80% or so?

You guys got it all wrong. First off I want to say I am a fan, and I woke up at 4:30 am EST to watch the match. He has a long way to go to be an elite player, and more than likely never will be - mainly consistency, return game and change of direction.

What I will also say is that Milos did not say he was explicitly injured, the guy asked him how it went the past few days and he said he was getting an MRI on his foot, but the anesthesia he was given allowed it to be a non factor in this match. He also went on to say that when Roger is at his best there is no game plan to beat him, as he is essentially unstoppable.

So basically per Nadal terms. "He put foot to sleep."

This loss/excuse **** is getting old from everyone. Win/Lose, whatever... if you can't play, then don't play, but don't make excuses like this afterwards... excuses that you wouldn't have made had you won.

Also, if you're truly injured, you have no business trying to play and possibly win due to some dumb luck only to get your ass handed to you in the next round after that.

Not true. Ask any real athlete. There is a very fine line between training, competing, and injuries. Most high level athletes are always pushing it to the limit. Injuries are part of their reality. Managing them is part of their main concerns. Sometimes they go too far.

Its easy for you to say it should not happen at all because you have no idea the physical rigour required from your lawn chair.

If you do something which injures you, and it is not a worthy cause like being in the military or law enforcement, it is not a good decision. I would say the same thing about climbing Everest too. No need to climb it since you can fly on a helicopter and get down there. But if you insist on doing it, don't complain about injuries. It costs the public lots of money to send those rescue squads out.

Great post. EXCEPT for the fact that Isner kicked his @ss on CLAY in the Davis Cup. Raonic, still looking for his 1st win against the Maestro. Fail.
