What Fed yelled to Murray at net

Since Murray hooked up with Lendl, he's become a headhunter. Lendl was notorious for this behavior when he was on the tour. Did you see that way he took a short shot when Roger was at the net and tried to blast him with it some time after the heated exchange? Murray has done this quite a few times in the past year or 2. Murray, himself, was very critical of this type of action before Lendl changed his thinking on it. Class act?

OMG who cares?!?! It's a tennis ball, not a bowling ball. When you don't have angles at the net and you think you can beat your opponent with pace by making him flinch, it's fair game. you sound like Berdych.

Yes because a tennis ball coming at a good 70-80 mph's at your head wouldn't hurt at all

If you have another play you should take that one first. If someone is trying to hit you all day, you're not going to react well. Eventually you will get angry if the person constantly has another play.

Come on man. A tennis balls not gonna give him a concussion like the NFL is so worried about. If you dont wanna risk getting hit by the ball then dont come up to the net.

You mean he's not from Bangladesh?

What's wrong w/being from Bangladesh ?

I'm from Bangladesh & had no trouble making ppl understand what I'm saying since day-1.

We Speak Great English, an American Speaks English w/Amrican accent , we speak english w/bengali-accent , maybe hard to pick up when speaking fast but I've had very few guys/gals telling me they don't understand me.

Right Murray was known to actually berate his coaches.

Hiring them, firing them when he did not like what they had to say. The only reason he cant do that with Lendl is because he knows physically if Murray cusses him out during the match or after Lendl will rip his head off and use it as a football.

Lets not bring class into this. Too big a word for such a trivial incident.

Someone said that fed never gives credit to his opponent.

Really? Like Nadal stating I was injured whenever he lost.

Murray after every beating administered by Roger giving pressers that fed is not the best but Nadal is.

When asked about the legacy of Roger?

Fed is a gentleman. Lets see what the other three so called top four are.

1. Djocko (Lance, George of the Jungle)
2. Nadal (Butt picker, Sour loser, and maybe juicer)

3. Murray (petulant drama queen)

In fact I wish Fed lost it more often. Cracking some skulls together sometimes gives great results. Just ask Jmac

Haha.. I love it. It's not like Federer has a history of doing stuff like this. If everyone is going to take one little isolated incident, and make it a federal case, then well, ALL tennis players, yes even myself, are brainless classless thugs, who don't deserve the air we breathe.

These tennis players don't put themselves on pedestals, insane fans with no real perspective in life does. So that means they are human, and prone to human mistakes. Don't get mad at them, get mad at yourself for convincing yourself otherwise.

I'd like to know Fed said cause he didn't look happy w/Murray. It's very unlikely of Roger if Murray wasn't getting on his nerves doing something that he shouldn't - Murray did stop playing then hit a ball as if nothing happened.... but I'd like to know exactly what happened as does everyone else.

Murray got under Roger's skin... having Lendl on his side is one of the best professional decisions he has made. He's even playing tennis more aggressively.

Murray and class can not be used in the same sentence. Murray is the most notorious foulmouth on tour. So Fed loses it once. Can't compare.

Murray is only guilty of showing emotion. I like players being angry, and whilst swearing is not ideal, it happens. if the sport wants to lose the stuffy image it has, then a bit of needle and bad language is no bad thing.

Federer is less gentlemantly in defeat. What else is new?

Was he? I don't know. He seemed to congratulate Murray quite well after the match with the handshake and stomach pat and then offering no excuses in the post-match press conference.

I think Murray pulling the Djokovic act of looking for sympathy with the whole 'grimacing in agony from pain' and then playing immediately after like nothing is wrong is getting silly. All these younger players are doing it. And they're grunting a lot when they shouldn't need to.

Murray doesn't course at the opponent.

I didn't actually notice this incident when watching the match. His comment to the umpire was probably worse anyway.

It wasn't particularily classy but tell me the last time Fed did something like this.

It was gamesmenship by Federer and it's not the first time. He was pretty much down and out against Djokovic in the 2011 AO semifinals when he yelled something to Djokovic during his service ball bouncing.

Look, all of the big four have used gamesmenship when they're losing and are desperately looking for a way back into the match. Nadal with his medical timeouts and bodychecking of Rosol, Djokovic with medical timeouts, Murray with his "fake injuries".

People that act like their favourite player is holier than thou need a reality check.

http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/25/federer-loses-cool-as-he-loses-match-to-murray/

MELBOURNE, Australia — Calling Roger Federer unflappable is normally as bold a statement as calling Shaquille O’Neal tall.

Federer usually plays tennis seemingly without breaking a sweat, his silken hair remaining in place as he glides across the court, his presence closer to the ethereal than the vulgar. His face rarely betrays emotion and his mouth nary emits a peep—in sharp contrast to the labored groans of many of his colleagues.

So it came as a surprise, to say the least, when the BBC was compelled on Friday to apologize for Federer’s “bad language.”

Federer’s first clearly audible obscenity in his semifinal loss to Andy Murray came with Murray serving at 4-5, 15-30. Murray fired a body serve which Federer could just get his backhand in front of and sent him into mostly indistinguishable muttering, punctuated with a loud, hard expletive in the middle.

Federer’s second audible offense came with Murray serving at 3-4, 40-40, in the fourth set. Murray won a 17-shot rally, and Federer exclaimed that his opponent had been “lucky,” preceding that word with a choice adverb.

But the most surprising of Federer’s verboten verbiage came later that set, with Murray serving for victory at 6-5. Murray prevailed in 15-stroke rally with a forehand winner, with both players finishing the point near the net. But Federer, on the brink of defeat, appeared to have taken issue with a slight mid-rally by Murray, and shouted “you [expletive]-ing stopped!” across the net. Murray appeared at first surprised, then amused, twisting his face into an exaggeratedly satisfied smirk, laughing and nodding toward his player’s box.

“I mean, I wasn’t that surprised,” Murray said of Federer’s invective. “I mean, stuff like that happens daily in tennis matches. You know, in sport, the stuff
that some people say on football pitches and in basketball and all sorts of sports. I mean, it was very, very mild in comparison to what happens in
other sports. It’s just one of those things.”

Federer downplayed the event even further.

I mean, it wasn’t a big deal anyway,” he said. “We just looked at each other one time. That’s O.K., I think, in a three-and-a-half hour match. We were just checking each other out for bit. No, I mean, that wasn’t a big deal for me. I hope not for him.”

Murray, who also cursed frequently during the match as he often does, said he was unfazed by how Federer chose to “check him out.”

“It didn’t rattle me,” said Murray. “I think he raised his game, you know, and that’s what happens. Sometimes guys need to get, you know, emotion into the match. He definitely raised his level and played in that game—I think he hit two balls onto the line and was extremely aggressive after that.”

Asked specifically what Federer had said, Murray declined.

“It doesn’t really matter,” he said. “It’s something that happens, like I say, all the time on tennis courts, in sport, all the time. Especially when it’s a one on one sort of individual combat. It’s not relevant. There’s no hard feelings.”

Six players have been assessed fines of up to $1,500 each for audible obscenities at the Open so far (though none since the third round). Federer did not receive a code violation during the match, and therefore will not have to add to the swearing fund.

Gamesmanship is used to help you win, within the rules but by a small margin. How is yelling at Murray gamesmanship? Time wasting, unnecessary MTOs, excessive ball bouncing, pretending you're injured when you're not; These things are gamesmanship. Losing your temper is losing your temper. I've never heard someone say that smashing a racquet is gamesmanship. How is this different? It's a spontaneous outburst. Getting angry can just as easily have a negative effect on the person getting angry.

I agree with this. Cheating, calling a false MTO or something is a sneaky tactic, showing bad gamesmanship. Temper is temper. Everyone has a moment when they curse. What Fed did is really rare, I've seen him curse maybe in 5 different matches, that's about it. Not a big deal.

You bet. That's why Federer yelled something at Murray while he was serving for the match up 6-5 in the fourth. Do you think Federer would have yelled something if the exact same thing happened in the 1st set? He was trying to rattle Murray.

The whole elegance facade is mostly a commercial origination. Federer, generally, is up to the part, but it's inevitable that one is going to slip up when under stress.

I'm not a Federer fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I've never understood the microscope focusing on his every act. Why do fans feel he needs to maintain that 'pure class' image all the time? Pretty much every incident (eg. this one, the 'lucky shot' remarks USO 2011, the backtalk to Djokovic's camp [well-justified at the time]) has been blown out of proportion. He's not a saint, but hardly a jerk either.

That being said, if Nadal had done anything resembling this, you can guarantee the TW pitchforks would be out in full force.

Truer words have not been spoken. Fact of the matter is his PR company plays up the image of perfection and the public eat it all up. When something like this happened, people act like the sky is falling.

I don't know why people are analyzing what roger said tot his degree. Every one has their quirks and annoying habits and Roger hides his best of the lot. Rarely do we see him curse or do something that could be considered unsportsmanlike.

Compared to him, Murray is no saint. Since the days of Lendl and one incidence involving Fernando Gonsales and radek stepanek, I have never seen anyone that goes for body shots consistently as Murray does. I think it's classless at the level they are playing at. Along with grabbing his body parts every time he loses a point and the cheap shots, Murray is probably the worst of the last decade in terms of sportsmanship. Now discuss that...

I love Fed and I think it's awesome when he occasionally shows that he's human and can be emotional. Murray didn't see it as a problem, being an emotional guy on court himself, and I think it just added to the drama of the match.

People forget what roger was like when he was a young up and coming player.

Because of how beautiful his game is, those amazing i-can't-believe-he-did-that moments of tennis he displays even in the most highly contested points, people lose sight of how fiercely competitive Federer really is. He has joked in the past about how it took him time not to let the animosity he felt for his opponent on the court spill over into what he thought about the guy off the court and as a person.

The sentiment isn't out of character at all, even if the expletives used are not his usual choice of words.

This ain't the first time. Fed full of class??

Against Djokovic's box in Monte Carlo: Roger: "Be quiet"
Against Del Potro at USO '09 final: to the umpire: "...I don't give a 5h1t what he said"
Against Roddick at Wimbledon '09 final: Wearing that 15 jacket
After winning the Australian Open 2010 SF, interviewed by Jim Courier: "Yeah no brit has won a slam in 10,000 years..."
Against Delpo at Roland Garros 2012: Telling the crowd to shut up.

Yeah class in a glass our Roger is ;)
Yeah, and Roger was totally right in each and every case.

I'd love to see it turn into a Lendl/McEnroe-like rivalry.
Wouldn't it be interesting if Federer hired McEnroe to be his coach?

Then McEnroe and Lendl can continue their 30-year on-going grudge match vicariously through Federer and Murray. :)
