So I am the point now where I am going to try to futures circuit. I have been having good results lately and want to see how far I can take my game. I have a few hitting buddies who are ranked top 1000 in the world and I am about at their level now, so I want to see how far I can go in the futures tournaments. his is just for myself to see how far I can go with my game. I plan on playing my first futures tournament in april. I will post some videos of my training in the meantime and post results when I start playing the tournaments for anyone who is interested :)

I know I will never actually make in on the pro tour, my goal is to get a few wins in the futures circuit and just just some kind of atp ranking. I teach for a living, and don't plan on trying to go pro or anything, I am just doing this for myself to see how far I can go. Thanks for the encouraging replies. I want to keep this threat alive for the whole time during training and playing. I will definitely post a training video in the next week.

Good luck. Having tried that route many, many years ago, I can tell you the most important thing you will have to have is some sort of financial backing. It isn't cheap. You either have to be rich on your own or have a rich buddy. :) Until you reach the top 200, you'll be paying for most of everything. The most expensive thing will be the travel costs.

Best of luck. I look forward to your updates. Not sure where you're located, but Decatur, IL has a Futures tournament in late July/early August. It's not far from me so if you make it to that one, I'll come out to cheer you on.

Good luck with your dreams! Will that April date include the USTA Futures swing in Florida? The first of those is in Vero Beach and I was lucky enough to do the stringing for them for seven years until I gave it up last spring. It's a very well run tourney on Har Tru at a nice club. The qualie draw is a 128-size so you've got to win four times to get main draw. Make sure you're well rested...that's a lot of tennis!

Its the level you go to if you want to spend much more money to play, and to travel away from home, and in return you get to lose to even higher level players than you usually lose to.

Which rank do you have to be to actually start making money?

Over time, the stringing, traveling expenses, leisure, miscellaneous (food, clothing, etc.) adds up...

there was an article a while ago of an Aussie player i think he was in the 200s and he said that he didn't make any money, all he won he spent on all you said. To make a good living of tennis you have to be 100 and up.

My goodness...

The odds of becoming a successful player is near remote... :(

That is one of the biggest complains of the players outside the top 100, in other sports, lets say soccer, the 200 best players in the world get paid really good money, the same for basketball players, rugby/american football, etc.

With that said it doesn't mean that they starve, a player in the 200 to the 100 position its supposed to make about 10000 to 15000 dollars a month, not including sponsoring, but that is the income, you have to discount all the expenses.

So it's Futures < Challengers < WTA < ATP (haha jk)

Another total noob question.. what is ITF? Is that purely college tennis?

Hey guys thanks so much for the support. I am not doing this to make money, I am simply doing this for fun just to see if I can get a few wins in the futures circuit. This is just for my own pleasure.

This is a video of my friend and I hitting some groundstrokes. My friend is a good 4.5 player, we have been hitting together for a long time. I edited out picking up the balls and what not, so there is just a sold six minutes or so of some baseline hitting. Hope you enjoy and I will be posting more soon. My next video will definitely be a match play video.

I am in the yellow shirt

That's awesome you did the stringing for that tournament. I think most qualifying draws are draws of 64. It is a lot of tennis. You have to make it through the round of 16 in the qualifying draw I believe just to get an entry in the main draw. Definitely would need a nice draw...

Correct. If you are outside of the top 100, you are poor basically. Even someone that is 75 in the world is not making much, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if someone who is 75 in the world is coming up in the minus column every year. It is a near impossible thing to do.

Not trying to be mean or to troll, just watched your video, you play well, but how old are you? Here in argentina you have to be between 15 and 18 to be able to play futures. You play quite well I will say 5 to 6 in your ratings. Here in argentina we have an amateur league from 9 to 1 levels and then the pro tournaments (with futures, challengers and atp tournaments). For what I saw in the video you would probably win the 2nd amateur league no problem and be between the best of the 1st league, but the futures would be a different story, you might be able to win a few games, probably a set but not many chances on a game. I have 2 futures that train every day next to me, one is Argentinean the other one is American they are around 17 years old and I can assure you they would double beagle me and it would be hard for me to get games or sets out of them, can't even dream of wining a match.
I couldnt find many videos of a futures but this one is of 2011 and it played at the club that I play at and its of the winner of the tournament: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLlq3gsmVLM
I have no idea what the level of futures in USA is, but if its near the argentinenan one you will have a hard time, I wish you all the best and that you win many games and if possible tournaments!

I still have some work in my game to do. I am training as much as I can right now. I have two friends that play in futures, I am a little under their level, but not by much. I would say I'm a half level, USTA rating wise, under them. If I can do it, great, if not, well then I tried! It's just for fun for me.
