Is this another situation whereby the top ones just make an appearance and let the other guys get a chance to win some moneY?

It's also Jules' 200th win. Poetic symmetry.

is it ?..lol, when benny was 2 points from winning a few of games before he actually did, and it looked like fed was storming back at 5-5 15-40 on bennys serve..i thought..bizarre if benny loses to fed AGAIN after being 2 points from victory like at wimby..but..he did not.

Are you kidding? These guys are champions and never want to lose. I did not see the match but heard Federer could not buy a serve. He can't win matches these days without his serve if he is facing any kind of decent player.

I didn't watch the end of the match and just saw the MP. That was a pretty do-able BH DTL to be honest by Fed's standards. But I guess Fed was too rusty today and his serve was another problem.

yeah, its starting to look like 2012 was the last hurrah.

ah well, who knows, he may eke out a win here and there but, its gonna be tough rowing.

Oh, come on now. Fed just had an off day and he lost. You've got it a heck of a lot better than long suffering Nadal fans like me. My fav really is done.

No he did not. He should be beating guys like Benneteau even at age 31 no excuses. Benneteau is the same age as Fed is after all. Federer's serve has been awful and players are reading it more easily, it does not have the same bite as it used to, at least not consistently. If he can't serve consistently, he won't win matches against the better players. Simple really.

Nadal is five years younger than Federer is and Nadal will find his game again.

you didnt watch the freaking match, you just came in here to slaag off federer

Fed just had an off day. Simple really! Even Fed's younger rivals have off days (i.e. Djokovic has lost to Querrey and Tomic, Murray has lost to Garcia-Lopez and Raonic, Nadal has lost to Melzer and Zeballos). All lesser players who normally wouldn't have much chance against the top 4, but have benefitted in certain matches from their own good play and some below-par play from their normally superior opponent.

Credit to Benetteau though, he played well and deserved to win on the day. Fed wasn't that great all week in truth. He will need to be much better in Dubai and I'm sure he will be. I hope Dimitrov can win in Rotterdam now!

I did not watch it but you don't have to be a genius to figure out that if Federer does not serve well, it is tough for him to win these days.

his serve isnt why he lost..not that you would know..having not watched it

it was everything else, his serve was ok-ish..maybe an untimely double fault, but his groundstrokes were wide and long or total shanks..and he let bennys attacking style get to him and fed rushed a few shots which didnt help either..at one stage he actually looked flustered.

When I see him serve, it looks like he is wary of his back. I don't think he is done because he took a loss at Rotterdam, however.

And Nadal should be beating mugs like Zebs at the age of 26 no excuses, but he didn't did he?

I watched the match and Fed didn't serve his best, but I still think he will be fine. He looked like he really didn't want to be out there so I doubt this loss will be the death of him.

I just looked at the match stats, 57% 1st serve percentage is Federer serving well? My point was that if he does not serve very well these days, it is more difficult for him to win a match against the better players because we know he is probably going to have periods of inconsistent groundstrokes and shank balls. He needs the insurance of having a very good and consistent serve. It just seems to me that lately the better players are reading his serve a little better.

Fed is not gonna repeat his unexpectedly glorious 2012, that's for sure. Everybody already knew time is not on his side. But he can still pull the occasional big win probably.

I would not make much conclusion from this match. He probably got enough
appearance money and was not gonna make much efforts on an off-day.

But, in general, I'm curious why French players would bother Federer more,
like Tsonga, Simon and Bennetau. Do they share tips on how to read
Federer's serves or something like that?

Nah, I think Federer's big win days are over. Will he beat Djokovic or Nadal at a slam again? I don't think so. Murray is such a choker at Wimbledon (ala Tim Henman), so maybe, but it wouldn't be so big as we all expect it.

Last time Federer and Djokovic met in a slam, Federer won 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3.

And how about the last time Federer met Nadal in a slam? Federer leads Djokovic a measly 6-5 in the slam h2h. Can't see that going in Federer's direction anytime soon... :p

be more worried about nadal's knees.

the way things are going nadal may retire before fed hangs it up.

It didn't look like he had his "keep his back warm" protective gear on, and especially since they were playing up north and in the evening, I was kind of wondering why.

No I did not watch the match but looked at the stats and he definitely was not serving well. When he does not serve well usually the rest of his game is not in sync. At least when he serves well it compensates for the shanks and errors he tends to make these days.

I can comment on any match I choose to comment on, if you don't like it, put me on ignore please.

As a Dutchman I can say it's so typical. All the big players always seem to collect their big payment for appearing in Rotterdam but they often leave early.

Well how come he always manages to get to the semi - finals /finals in the slams!

I don't think Federer wanted to leave early/didn't care. He said so much in his presser, that he wanted to play more and stay longer. He just got outplayed by a better opponent on the day, it happens.

So why did grandpa tank this one ?

(a) To say 'thank you' to Benny for Wimbledon last year
(b) Was scared of getting destroyed by Baby Fed in the final
(c) To show solidarity with his BFF who lost to Zeballos on clay

Looks like Delpo is the favorite to win this but would love to see Benny pick up the title here, however unlikely it is.
