No chance. Guys like him never have the consistency in results to top the game. He would need to change so much of his game so as to basically make him a different player in order to be the top player.

He's still very young and the talent base is there, he can grow into becoming a great champion. Of course, he may not too. But I see the potential there for him to be something special. IMHO

For what it is worth : pretty well every coach that either had Bernard in squad or individual work has attested to his high skill level.

Talent will only get you say far, look at how hard Djokovic, Murray, Federer & even Nadal have worked. I say even Nadal because he had an amazing transition from juniors to ATP top 20.

We can argue what making it means but Tomic is around there, whether he breaks through top 20 or even top 10 will be up to him.
Staying there is even harder.

News from a couple of tennis reporters on twitter...

John Tomic allegedly arrested 3 days ago in Madrid 4 head butting/breaking nose/knocking out Bernie's French hitting partner.

ATP officially confirms to me there was an incident and they are investigating

W.P good....Bernard needs a new coach, a new attitude...this guy thinks he's rebellious Agassi though without the slams or a top ten placing before 20....someone will straighten him out...like a Brad Gilbert

it has the potential to be the best thing that ever happened for Tomic.

and the worst..

it's a miracle he even won 5 games against Stepanek in the circumstances, though

Tomic is just another good player without a head on his shoulders. He'll go the way of Monfils soon enough. There have been lots of guys come and go who think and act exactly like he is.

"... best ever to play the game." Jeez.

There's only one guy without a major who is allowed to even utter that sentence. Marcelo Rios. For those of us who watched him... we know that he's probably the only guy who could have potentially lived up to that statement.

I think a lot of the trouble with Tomic is the environment he's been brought up in. Fast cars, partying, big mansions have previously taken priority over working hard to be the best he can be. Theres only so much that can be attributed to himself at his age. I think they way he has been brought up by his father has been majorly detrimental. The way he carried on when Tomic tried to get away from the cops is a good example of this.

Damir Dokic, John Tomic - same branding. They are headcases.

Yeah, and unfortunetly the Davis Cup got barely a mention over here at all in the newspapers. It wasn't even on tv. The only way of following the scores was through twitter. If Tomic got smashed, walked out of the stadium and punched Pat Rafter in the face you wouldnt have heard about it. The media is just hellbent of squeezing every drop of blood out of a stone during football season - everything else is completly forgetten. The only time tennis is mentioned is during the Aussie Open and maybe an article or two for Wimbledon. Such a rag is the Australian media that the installation of a water fountain that delivers sparkling water gets precedence over the North Korea crisis. I kid you not.

Wow. o.0

That sounds pretty bad. In New Zealand we get a few articles for each grand slam and sizeable articles on the two tournaments.

I hope Hewitt is drawn to play Tomic in the AO then teaches him a lesson in front of the Aussie public by thrashing him 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.

Then maybe Tomug will grow up and put in the hard yards required to fulfil his potential.

And the only real points he is defending for the rest of the year are the Stockholm points he got from his run to the SF last year. Lost early at Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Shanghai and didn't even make the main draw of Paris.

Tomic's played many tournaments this year. He's only playing 4 or 5 for the remainder of the year.
Tokyo 5-11 October. ATP500
Shanghai. 12-18 October. Masters1000
Stockholm. 19-25 October. ATP250 (I think he should skip this but he was the semi finalist last year)
Valencia. 26 October- 1 November. ATP500.
And he'll most likely play the Paris Masters1000. November 2.

If he can get into the top 16 before the end of the year then he should be secured a top 16 seeding at the Australian Open which would see him not face a top 8 player til the 4R. It also could see him be the second seed at his favourite tournament the Apia International in Sydney where he won his first title and was a runner up the following year.

It's getting to the point where his ranking is now higher than his actual level and ability.

Topic a top 30 - 35 player? Ok.

Topic a top 20 and soon to be higher? No way.

what does he mean by Best EVer ???????? he couldn't even beat Murray in davis cup
Partied hard, got arrested several times, got kicked out of Davis Cup team, was told he had reached rock bottom,.......

....and then beat Hewitt in a Grand Slam and became World number 20!

This guy is so relaxed and cool.

It's mind boggling that the serious and fierce Ryan Harrison and Donad Young are not doing better ranking wise.

Thinking outside of the box does work wonder.

Just relax, dudes.

He's likely to be top 10 in the next couple of years. This really is the weak era in terms of depth. The complete absence of talented players aged 21-26 has hollowed out the field.
