abmk, Wer will never agree regarding Federer's competition (at least in comparison to Rosewall's opponents!).

LOL, I would be very surprised if you did that .... considering how much less you know about the modern era...... at the very least you could watch/learn before arguing with others who have actually watched plenty ...

That you can sleep peacefully: Hewitt is at least as good as Haas.

sleep peacefully ? you think that depends on your opinion ........ LOL, I'm having a good laugh here ......

hewitt was a far better player than haas ... face it, you just haven't watched much of hewitt or even haas for that matter ... you are just trying to blow up haas now because he beat djokovic recently .....

Not answering every sentence could also mean that I don't disagree every time.

it seems rude when you don't acknowledge a poster's point when he/she is right ....when you only respond to contradict ...

You can judge a player even though you have not seen him in his peak years by watching him later (Rosewall 1970, 1971), by reading books, talking and writing to players and so on.

yeah, but you haven't done that for the 2000s .. watching matches, getting to know the players etc etc ..

BobbyOne

G.O.A.T.
Lots of players had their best year in their late 20's.

Gonzales - 1956 - 28 years old - only one set from Pro Grand Slam + Tournament of Champions

Rosewall - 1963 - 28/29 years old - Pro Grand Slam winner

Newcombe - 29/30 years old - late 1973 to early 1974 - US Open winner, Davis Cup winner, WCT Finals winner

Laver - 1967 - 28/29 years old - Pro Grand Slam winner + Pro Wimbledon + every other significant Pro title that year

Agassi - 1999 - 29 years old - French Open winner, US Open winner, Wimbledon Runner-up - year end number 1

Tilden - 1921 - 28 years old - World Hardcourt Championship, Wimbledon, US Championships + Davis Cup

timnz, Good points and rather convincing.

Yet a few remarks: Rosewall was at least equal good in 1962.

Laver took some profit in 1967 by Rosewall's partly decline that year, by Ken's surprising defeats by Gimeno in two pro majors. Plus he could beat Rosewall (33) only in five sets at Wembley.

You are wrong that Laver won every pro tournament of significance: he lost several tourneys with tough competition to Rosewall (L.A., San Francisco after leading clearly and Newport Beach).

But generally you are right. I just wonder why Federer declined so early (at 26/27 according to his heavy fans).

I think you agree that a great player has not only one peak year. His peak comprises a few years even though it might cumulate in ONE year.

By the way, I just could not fall into sleep. Before standing up again now, I had many thoughts about tennis history. F.i. I realized that Rosewall has just another edge against Laver: In their common pro days before open era (1963 to 1967) Rosewall won four majors against Laver in straight sets while Laver won only one in straight sets. And Rosewall lost three in five sets while Laver lost only one in five.

I admire Haas not only because of his backhand but also that he is so strong as an old player. He not only beat Djokovic but also the younger (then himself) Federer last year. I doubt that Roger will be as successful in Tommy's age of now (35)

not just according to me ... its a fact ... you yourself have admitted you haven't watched much of the modern players ...

when you say peak levels of nadal/djoker are much higher than federer's ..that hewitt wouldn't be top 10 in other so called stronger eras .. when you say one of federer's weaknesses is lack of touch shots ...putting peak levels of newk, roche, becker above federer's ......its blatantly obvious you haven't watched much ....

and you don't know too much about the old players ;-)

I don't know as much about the 60s as I do about the present era, not even close ... but I do know far more about the 60s than you do about the present era ... that's the difference ....

lol, that's so typical of you ...another biased post vs federer .... I assure you federer at 35 will be much better than haas at the same age .....

yeah, haas is doing very well now for his age and the level of player that he is ... but peak to peak , hewitt was quite a bit better ....

and again, I gotta smile at the BH comment .... federer's BH is a bit better and you call that a weakness of his ......watch some of the haas vs nadal matches to see how badly nadal has abused haas' BH ....

even in many of the fed-haas encounters, federer has come out on top in the BH to BH exchanges ...

Mono at the beginning of 2008, at the US Open the commentators were saying that he was just that little bit slower now and it was throwing off his forehand timing. I think he lost a lot of confidence too. 2008 was just a really patch for him. From 2009 - AO 2010 he was playing better though, not at peak levels but he still made every final and won 3 slams. He really should have won them all, the AO 09 and USO 09 are two slams he never should of lost IMO. But alas not to be...

2012 was a really good year for Federer, I think he was very motivated. I know he had back injuries in 2010 which hampered at the very least his Wimbledon performance. But from the indoor season of 2011 up to the US Open 2012 he was the best player in the world. There were patches of good play in 2010 and 2011, he was just really prone to bad days...

Yeah, don't get me wrong he's still one of the best movers on tour. But trust me he's not as explosive and quick as he was at his peak. His speed declining is why his forehand has declined, he can't get into position fast enough to rip it like he used to.

yes, ignoring logical arguments is bad because it shows you just want to put your side of the argument, but not listen/acknowledge what the others say ....

I can be rude at times, but that's only when I encounter very silly/wrong statements , not in cases where it is somewhat close and it comes down to personal opinion..... now for example, I think federer has a slightly better BH than haas, but I am not going to be rude if someone says otherwise ..

but if someone says that roddick has better passing shots than nadal, duh, obviously that's ridiculous .....

ditto when one says hewitt wouldn't be top 10 in other so called stronger eras ....

respect comes when posts are close to reality .....if you are very far off reality , many people will criticize and be rude .....not everyone has the patience to respond correctly/politely to statements like those ....

Well, Holland almost beat us in the final, in the last minute they had a chance with the match tied but the ball hited the post. Then, as usual with the oranges, they choked in the overtime.

In retrospective, all the world cup was planned to give Argentina the cup. Remember that at the time, we had a corruptive military government, and they needed the world cup to maintain distracted the people from what was really going on in the country. Similar to the world cup held in Italy in 1934, under the pressure of Mussolini`s power.

Anyway, if Messi`s teammates are at a decent level next year, it is foregone conclusion, the cup is returning to Buenos Aires.

Cruyff, Neeskens, Haan, Rep, Rensenbrink. What great players and great teams the Dutch produced in the 70's. Deserved to win a World Cup in many ways and in both finals in 74 and 78, were up against the host country.
That Ajax side of the early 70's were one of the greatest club teams ever.

Speaking of World Cups, their quality as footballing spectacles has certainly gone down over the last twenty years or so.
