What is your favourite film?

Interesting you used the word "passionate," I'd recommend The Passion of the Christ; a film you can get value from over many separate viewings.

The Truman show is my favourite film. Its original, very cheesy which can be annoying but it adds 1950s middle America charm and the actings great. American history x is another fantastic film with great acting. Quiz show is another. s luth another for amazing acting.

If you like war movies watch das boot German film set it a submarine Second World War.

So the question is about a movie one is passionate about ... I'd totally agree with POTC which deeply moved me, as also did various holocaust movies (hard to decide, but Life is Beautiful is very much up there).

Very passionate about animal related movies, and I liked War Horse (Spielberg).

If you want recommendations, I'd like to mention How Green is my Valley, ... Barry Lyndon ... Sunset Boulevard ...

If you want more recommendations, try to check out those that got Oscar nominations, or got the Best Pic, as well as those that won the Palme D'or, Golden Bear, Golden Lion.

See the ones that won or were nominated for Best Foreign Film.

Once upon a time in Anatolia, Amour, A separation, A Prophet, Once upon a time in the West, Life of Others, ...
(more later).

The Deer Hunter is masterful... They simply do not, no, cannot make films like this now. Will blow you away. There has been no equivalent in my lifetime. Best film Robert De Niro was ever in and is beautiful and true in parts in a way that current films cannot be.

"Life of Pi" has to be on this list.. It's about the meaninglessness of life...

figured no one else would mention this, but "the kingdom"

the col. al-ghazi character was one of my favorite in any movie I've seen

I think my favorite films include "High Noon" (a nice BW) and Citizen Kane. Can't go wrong with either.

I saw "Star Wars" again recently, which was a downer, since I saw it in '76 when it came out, as a youth and it was exciting to me back then, but now it's B-rate Saturday morning TV fare, imho; much has changed since then.

what you really want to do is avoid the Hollywood formulaic "sex and violence" stuff, which is SO tedious by now, in 2013; you want to find good plots.

Wanted to add some genre films:
  • Before Sunrise: Most romantic film. Chicks love this. I'm a sucker for idealistic pretty French women and Julie Delpy, which is kinda the same thing.
  • Gattaca: Sci-Fi/Drama about the triumph of the human spirit... Really resonated with me... will inspire in a non-Disney movie way.

Anyone feel particularily passionate about a film and would recommend it?

I'm not one for heavy films. I have no desire to see Schindler's List. So for me I watch films to be entertained. I always enjoy Harvey, Casablanca and Arsenic and Old Lace and The Little Shop Around The Corner are favorites for me.

I really like that film, easily one of my favorites, Top 10.

Shawshank Redemption is definitely one of my favorites right now if not my all time.

Lord Of The Rings and Shawshank Redemption.

The Big Lebowski, The Shawshank Redemption, Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite films. I in fact prefer the Turner cable cut of the film. There are some extended scenes with "The Sisters" that show their harsh treatment of Andy.

Great thread. I'd say that 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Godfather, Altered States, The Graduate, Marathon Man, and Taxi Driver are among my favorite movies.

In France, we have (had) a great comic actor: Louis de Funes. Do you know him?
For example in Les Gendarmes à Saint-Tropez, Rabbi Jacob, La Grande Vadrouille, Le Corniaud...

And also Pierre Richard, La Moutarde me monte au nez.

I have a bunch of French movies to watch - some pretty old ones, can't wait to start: rififi (1955), Bob Le Flambeur (1956), Le Doulous, Le Deuxieme Souffle and possibly French : Central Station, A Prophet, A Kid with a bike, Diving Bell and Butterfly, The Illusionist, the Beat my heart skipped...

I recently saw Intouchables and Amour. Great.
