Sampras: Djokovic can challenge my record run at No. 1

No Sampras....If Federer can't then surely Djokovic can't. 4 More Consecutive YE#1....don't see it.

Either Murray or Nadal will end one of the following years as Number 1 end rank.

Maybe Sampras is jinxing. Next thing he'll say Nole can challenge his 14 slam count.

It looks like he will end 2013 as nº1 for the third consecutive year (something only Connors, McEnroe, Lendl, Sampras and Federer have done before).

To get to five or six (consecutive) YE#1 is still too far away.

On one hand it looks like the young players won't be a problem for Djokovic in the near future ( they can't even get to top-10 ).

On the other hand, he would need to stay injury-free, motivated, mentally fresh and still playing at a great level the next 3 years.

It is not impossible but it will be very difficult.

Would be cool to see...I am a fan of Djokovic. Frankly I want him to become a great, great all time player, we can have the GOAT and two high tier legends all in the early 2000s era

In order to do so he'd have to end his 6th year at #1, aged 29.

He could do it, although by the time he first reached #1 he'd already clocked a lot of miles so I'd say it's unlikely.

To be honest, I think Sampras' record of 6 year end #1's is going to last a very, very long time indeed.

  • Players' average age went up
  • Federer had Nadal problem which ended his run at 4 but Djokovic does not have anyone yet.

So maybe not impossible in this era.

I think Djesus will surpass Fed's record at #1 by the end of his career. Just like he will most likely reach Fed's slam count as well. I'll be laughing heartily at the Fedites who rooted for him endlessly against Nadal in order to protect Fed's slam count, only for Djesus to overtake it himself. Just desserts that they richly deserve.

This. Djokovic doesn't have a nemesis like Federer had with Nadal.

The sky is the limit for the Serb.

why not? federer seems to be out of the running. nadal has to be completely healthy for him to overtake djokovic and even then, it seems djokovic has his number. and murray seems to be a level below djokovic. and it will take a few years for an up and comer to overtake him eventually...so its possible

As much as watching the Federarinas squirm and despair is always of great pleasure, this post hints that at heart you are more of a Djokovic fan than you let on.

I'm done predicting what's gonna happen in tennis for the next few years when there have been so many twists and turns in the last 5 years.

But if I had to put my money on it I would say no.

The hell I am. I cannot stand him and have never liked him. Believe what you want, but you are WAY off on this one.

This is one I could see happening. Wont neccessarily happen but could. Djokovic is going to end 2013 at #1, that is already obvious. Even if someone else ended up with 2 slams vs 1 for him, they would not be consistent and strong enough over a whole year to make it (Murray and Nadal area already way behind in race points, Nadal is almost certain his usual poor post U.S Open, Murray isnt consistent enough, etc..). Another 3 or 4 years would be difficult but what are Nadal's odds to ever end another year #1 at this point. Probably not great. Murray has never ended a year ranked above Djokovic, atleast not since 2007 when both became top players for the first time. Del Potro or Federer are even more unlikely, and then there are the so called up and comers who stink currently but new ones will come at some point.

Sampras is just taking any opportunity to say the words "my record" while he still can, since it's about the only record he has left since the Federer era.

Haha good point. I agree that's pretty much the only valuable record he has left but it's going to take some time before it's broken as I don't see Djokovic doing it.

The obvious point that everyone is overlooking is that another great player is waiting to rise up and challenge the greats of today, just as Fed did in 2003, Nadal in 2005, and Djokovic in 2007. We are due for another great talent to come through the ranks.

My money is currently on Dimitrov but who knows who it will be in reality...

OP: Possible. Djokovic is an unusual force in the sport.

Sampras is just taking any opportunity to say the words "my record" while he still can, since it's about the only record he has left since the Federer era.

However, regarding one record--the most important record, they (Sampras and Federer) sit in the same position of players incapable of winning the Grand Slam.

Its certainly possible I guess. Fed-Nadal are reaching their last hurrah, Murray still has yet to prove he can take over top ranking, and dominate, and no other young up and comers.

Nole could definitely challenge ALOT of records barring injury of course (Fed's 17, Nadal's 3 slams in one year on 3 different surfaces, Laver's Calendar, Petes YE#1 etc)

It proves nothing. Do I have to start complimenting Djesus for you people to believe I can't stand him? Do you people realize how silly this all sounds?

I CANNOT STAND NOVAK DJOKOVIC. I FIND HIM, HIS TEAM, AND HIS BACK FROM THE DEAD FAMILY REVOLTING.

Is that clear enough for you? Lol.

Also, going by this logic, Monfed, Breakpoint, Magnus and several others are all completely in love with Nadal. Do you honestly believe any of those people like Nadal at all? They all want to see him 6 feet under and the sooner the better.

The more Djokovic wins this year the harder it'll be for him next year when trying to defend all those points. As guys like Dimitrov mature and Del Potro, Tsonga and Berdych show flashes of brilliance more often the chance of early losses is only going to increase.

Whether than affects him enough over the course of the whole year is the big question. Can someone else - Nadal or Murray most likely - reap the benefits?

Nadal has no points to defend past Wimbledon so he could very easily become #1 in the world come 2014 if he wins the Australian Open. It is unlikely but still possible.

Players I dislike, I rarely mention, if at all. Breakpoint, near as I can tell, doesn't "hate" Nadal personally, just is not a fan of his game. However, when little girls loudly announce in the playground how "revolting" they find a boy, but apparently can't stop talking about him, and how much they "loathe" him, lest anybody misunderstand, you know what they "really" mean. Chick logic, hehehehe

You must have missed the fact that Monfed was banned the other day because he took his Nadal obsession to new heights. How about Magnus? He hates Nadal too, as do many others on here. This is more like male logic, which a lot of the time, makes no sense at all to anyone but them. Lol.

I hope you will still be active in TTW, when I bump this thread after Novak retires.

No one protects anyone else records. Fed has earned it for himself and If Novak beats him, good for him.

Stop this nonsensical tirade of Novak being like an emissary of Fed sent to protect his records.

With Federer declining and if Nadal doesn't recover 100% from his injury I don't see anyone been able to dethrone him. Murray is not on par and I don't see Ferrer (getting older), Berdych or Del Potro doing it.

Though I hate to disagree with Pete Delpo can take out Djoker on any given day.

By definition that is not "any given day." Those are days when Delpo is on fire, and maybe days when Djoker is subpar or some combination of the 2. Those days don't happen all that often, and it's not a guarantee Delpo even takes him out on these days.

In 2009, I was actually able to predict Djokovic would dominate the game (in the coming years) providing he got fitter and motivated. I was actually pretty uch the only guy who didn't call him out for being a one-slam wonder like others. Back then all the hype was on Murray. Lol.
