i really am speechless at the stupidity of the dumbsh!ts who seeded this tournament - ok not totally, here i go:

they're aware UVA was not only the only undefeated but also won the same major national tournament that UCLA lost in the semis of earlier this year, right???

what possible explanation??? besides - "a mathematical formula trumps common sense" - wow!

I bet Uva fans are happy about being on the bottom side of the draw though. No USC,OSU and maybe even Duke if they get their act together

they didn't do any shifting really! Kentucky still up there.

yeah, ridiculous, but makes me happy

duke only has two really awful SEC teams between them and the quarters and a fun match vs UCLA

yes, aware i said wake was "awful" which they still are, they lost to friggen UNC this season

if Duke can't get by South Carolina and Kentucky after the wake up call they received last week, they should dissolve the program

In January, I said that the five best teams were UVa, UCLA, USC, Ohio State, and Duke. UVa is on one side of the draw, and the other four are on the other side of the draw. I guess it would be an understatement to say that I cannot complain about the draw.

To the other four, I say: Best wishes, and beat each other senseless in the quarters and semis.

yeah, even if seedings were stupid, they took care of the ACC

free passes to quarters for Duke and semis for UVA by way of SEC cupcakes

Yeah, if I was UVA, I'd be pretty happy.

haha, glad you're taking the stupid #2 seed well, i bet a few are freaking on thesabre.com, but yes it really worked out very well for UVA

btw, i'll give the dawgs credit for having a relatively tough draw - wake may be awful, but they're playing with a lot of belief right now and some hot racquets, and OU is no joke the way they're playing right now

they'll have a nice reward in a Pepperdine team they have too much depth for if they avoid those two early pitfalls

btw, south carolina coming to duke is an interesting storyline

josh goffi, who just won sec coach of the year, was assistant coach at duke and has been credited for the brazil pipeline that most notably resulted in cunha but a couple others as well

will be a nice reunion b/t folks, hopefully doesn't take the edge off their fighting instinct

Round of 16 might have a rematch between Ohio State and Texas A&M.

USC-Baylor in round of 16 will be interesting if USC is not healthy, but maybe not so interesting if USC has healed by then.

I know not men, but Miami, FL got screwed on Women's side. They win the ACC beating UNC in the SF and drop spots to #11
Duke lost their regional host spot in the Women's tournament.
Somehow TN and Ole Miss both got at large bids.

well, 4 tennis players and a soccer player who wins a singles game occasionally, to be more specific

glad they aren't hosting - i feel for them and all they went through in an epic disaster of a season - but we don't need to see any more of that futile attempt in durham this year

best of luck to them all healing up in the offseason

I thought they were going to pull out the match vs. VA Tech, but couldn't come through at #4.

sad to think how much potential they had

they shut out two time defending champs UF - AFTER ALREADY LOSING arguably their two most important players, capra and kahan (though i would say mar is probably better than kahan nowadays)

oh well, **** happens, will be fun to see how they come back next year

Miami is #6 seed. Northwestern is #11, in Miami's path in round of 16.

And, Northwestern beat Miami at the Indoors. But, it was a close match and Northwestern has been very up and down this season (currently up).

I just hope Northwestern can get to Champaign-Urbana. Anything else is gravy for me. But, Miami is a winnable match on paper at least. Are they certain to meet each other?

In other words, are the seeds matched up perfectly - 1-16, 2-15, 3-14, etc. Or is there some variety as in professional Slams. I thought one year Northwestern was 12 or 13, yet drew Stanford who was 1 or 2 in the round of 16.

How about those potential quarterfinal matchups on the one side of the bracket - UCLA/Duke & Ohio State/USC - both at the same time though.

The ITA computer rankings seeded the field, not some silly conspiracy theory.

And Virginia has been on the receiving end of more than a few screw jobs when it comes to seeding the tournament. Like the year USC won the tournament as the 8 seed.

What happened to the Duke women? They were No. 2 or 3 earlier this year, and then lost a player? But, I keep hearing they still don't have a replacement?

Are they a dangerous floater then?

they lost four players permanently - one suspension, three season ending injuries

no, not a floater, just a sinking ship / animal wounded in a field waiting for farmer to put it out of misery

Ole Miss should be chomping at the bit, first being lucky to get in then drawing an underwoman team of Duke.

psh, usc hadn't done anything that season leading to their first ncaa trophy. other side of that draw was way harsher with an almost undefeated Ole Miss, a nearly invincible Ohio State at seed 3, and a ucla team that had beaten usc twice in pac 10s.

Robert Farah was injured, USC lost some matches and their ranking dropped, then Farah got healthy for NCAAs. The NCAA seeded by the computer rankings. If they start taking things like injuries into account, there is no end of juggling they could do, so they left it alone. I have no complaints about Virginia having to play USC in the QFs, because we were not going to beat them in any round that year, so I am not too concerned with the exact round of our loss.

You are exaggerating the strength of Ole Miss and Ohio State. Neither one made the final, so they were not quite all that.

Duke still has the ability to win #1 and #2 doubles and then three of the top four singles matches. Not against top ten teams, but others should not take them lightly.

Anyone think Michigan can take Kentucky?
Saw Michigan play last week twice.
Michigan's doubles are very weak, advantage UK.
After King at #1 the quality drops.
Vlad Stephan is a strong #4, should be playing #2, but other spots struggle against quality opponents.
My prediction: UK 4-2 with UM wins possible at #1 and #4 singles.

You are probably referring to the wrong year from the original quoted post. This year was Koniecko's senior year where their lineup was top notch between 1-3 and spring admit Chase Buchannan was placed at 6. It was the perfect storm that USC was able to outplay a Stanford team that they had split with previously, then beat a better Virginia team after multiple rain delays and beat an Ohio State team that went the distance against UCLA the day prior.

Anyways, I specifically mention USC's first NCAA championship in 2009 when they were seeded 8 because nobody expected them to win their first one.

Right, I remembered the USC situation from that year but forgot about Ohio State's lineup, one of their better lineups ever.

It was not until USC won their round of 64 match that I started taking them seriously. After the PAC-10 regular season and tourney, going into the first NCAA match, I actually thought that Farah was not really 100% and was just going to be an injured sacrificial lamb at #1. Instead, Farah looked like the top player in college tennis. Without him being 100%, USC loses to Stanford in the round of 16 and that's the end of that little drama. Farah and Johnson clinched the doubles point in a tiebreaker over Klahn/Thacher, then Farah beat Alex Clayton in three sets at #1 singles, and USC still only won 4-2. Farah beat Dom Inglot of UVa 6-3, 6-1 in the QFs, while losing for the only time in the NCAAs in doubles vs. eventual champions Inglot/Shabaz. Farah beat Kutrovsky of Texas 6-3, 6-3 in the SFs and won in doubles, and then beat Koniecko in three sets in the final and won in doubles. Finished the NCAA tourney 5-1 in doubles and 5-0 in singles, with a DNF in the first round. Anyone who did not anticipate how fit Farah would be would not have predicted much for USC, but that is deceptive once Farah, Magdas, et al. are all healthy.

All of the doubts that all of us had about USC that year were based on injury and the subpar USC results that were affected by injuries, e.g. Magdas not being able to play singles against Stanford and three guys moving up in the lineup and USC still only lost 4-3 to a #5 Stanford team (one reason USC ended up #8; they were #4 going into that match). Before that, Farah played injured against UCLA and lost badly in doubles and singles and USC still only lost 4-3 in early March.

All interesting history, but I am not sure that any team has a similar situation this year. Is there any team out there that has been subpar due to injuries and might suddenly get healthy? The only one who comes to mind is .... the 2013 USC team! If Gomez and De Vroome get healthy for NCAAs, the #5 Trojans might be better than the #1 Bruins. I would still favor UVa in the final, but if we see a healthy USC in the round of 16 and earlier, it would not be a surprise if they beat some top teams. I don't recall any other top 10 team being greatly affected by injuries on the men's side this year. Perhaps someone else knows of an example.

Vandy, Texas A&M, and Mississippi State regionals have the worst 1st round matches by far. Vandy/ETSU & Illinois/Ga State, aTm/Marist & Texas/aTmCC, and Miss St/Peay & Harvard/Samford. Every one of those matches should be 4-0 romps.

I'm surprised they didn't send Austin Peay to Nashville since Peay's campus is only about 45 minutes from Vandy.

Based on the impressive win Wake just had over Duke during ACC's, there's a good chance they'll beat Northwestern, and i think if they meet Georgia in the next round, it's going to be a close match. They recently ended UVA's 20 match winning streak in doubles, and had the match stayed outdoors, i think Wake would have pulled off a big upset.
Thoughts on the Northwestern and Georgia matches?

lol - yeah UVA was terrified i'm sure, they came back from losing dubs pt against a great OSU team in indoors, but probably couldn't do so against a semi-decent WF team that lost to UNC this season

it was only because the match was indoors that UVA demolished WF with four comfortable straight sets singles wins (none of those 8 sets closer than 6-4, and only 3 were even that close), leaving wake nowhere close to putting a second point on the board

enjoy your landmark win from last week though - sorry it still wasn't enough to get you guys the respect of a regional site or a decent draw - no one thinks you're a top team
