Tough call, personally I would read all the books, but I am somewhat of a book nerd. My brother started reading at book two, after the first season aired and he said he was fine with that. The books are loooonnnng, so be prepared for that. The next book, Book Four:A Feast for Crows, leaves out a few characters. You get a richer sense of the story and characters by reading, the TV series for me is just the gravy.

I just don't know if I want to go back and read what I already saw on the TV show or forge ahead into unchartered territory???

It's a tough call. I saw the first season and then went on reading starting at book 2. This was probably the wrong thing to do, I should have read the first book (which I did later).

Why do you want to read the books? If it was me making the call for you (at this point in the story), I would say don't read them. As long as you can avoid spoilers, I would stick with the show, which will no doubt pass the books by in about 3 years.

I want to read the books because everyone I talk to who has read them says how much better they are than the show.

Why did you feel it was a mistake to start reading at book 2 after the first season?

There is more detail in the books (obviously, they're huge) with very slightly different plot lines and events. That would be the reason to read from the beginning, for anyone.

Here is my main point, you've seen a lot of the story now, you know lots of spoilers. The books WILL NOT have the same impact on you as they did on those of us reading and not knowing the story. To me, not knowing is a huge part of the enjoyment.

It's your call of course, but that is my advice to you. I don't want to give anything away that could be a spoiler, so I'll leave it at that.

Just noticed that the actress who plays Rob Stark's 'medicine woman' also plays a femme fatale in a TV series called 'Dates'.

Oona Chaplin. She's rather attractive....

I haven't understood why the wildlings chose to climb Castle Black. There's 16 unmanned castles they could have chosen to climb, open the gates, and let their people through.

Book 1-3 are good but 4 & 5 drag on. Hopefully, 6 & 7 get better or HBO start making some significant changes to speed thing up for the show.

I got one question. Those dragons are not big yet. Won't they be in danger of being killed in the battle ? Won't a clever general find a way to put some arrows into these small dragons ?

At this point if it was my call, I would hold off on the books altogether.

Now if you're either going to do one or the other, then I guess you should start at the beginning.

agree, start at beginning and read books 1-2 and about 1/2 of Book 3 in order to catch up and prepare for Season 4

Some of the people in GOT ain't the brightest. Jon Snow turns up at castle black with two arrows sticking out of his back and they roll him onto his back!

I wonder what’s up with Roose Bolton not telling Tywin about the two Stark children that are still alive. If you remember Ramsay and Theon had a tender moment where Theon confessed to Ramsay, that he exchanged two farmers children’s bodies for the two boys. Now Tywin has made him warden of the north until Tyrion and Sansa produced an heir. So what do you think? Does Roose know that they are alive? What does this bode for season four?

Roose probably knows Bran/Rickon are out there, and he will probably try to deal with (i.e eliminate them) it on the low.

He cant ask northern lords for help, remember Starks have ruled in the North for 1000's of years, Bolton's don't have the best rep as a house, other northern lords would keep him as safe as possible, such as the Umbers, where Rickon is going.

AFFC imo is brilliant, apart from one POV character who shall remain nameless (''Im looking for a maid of 3 and 10'') I thought it was fantastic, though it could have been longer.

I think at this stage of the story, it's hard to tell what Roose know's and doesn't. Ramsay seems like a total loose cannon.

As with any book, it's in the eyes of the beholder. Really GRRM brought the general lack of love for AFFC on himself by the way he split up 4 and 5 (something the show of course will not do). If he'd have just stuck with the winning formula up to that point, my feeling is that it would not be everyone's (OK almost everyone's) least favorite book.

To me it was just OK, but a HUGE let down after ASOS.

I'm sure Roose has his plans. But they may not involve eliminating them as much as having them as a barganing chip.

I think a Stark has been King of the north since the first men. Which is 8,000 plus years ago. It was a Stark that built the wall (Bran the Builder). Lannisters have only been around like 6,000 years. Taragyens not even 500. Although Robb did his best to bring the name down I'm sure one of these Starks will find a way to survive. And you are right the northerners will always pledge allegiance to Starks.

Heck Maybe John Snows real mom was like his aunt or somehting and he ends up bangin Danerys. Then you have the ole fire and ice combo :)

Have not read past book three so this is on no way shape or form actually truth. I just wouldnt past GRRM to pull that off.

question to anyone who's read the books.....if I were to start now, should I start with Book 1 or start at the point where the TV show just ended?

I was well into season two before I read all the books except the last one. Why have I not read it? The release date for the paperback was in August last year but got pushed back (or is that up?) to October. I was so looking forward to reading this last book during my recover from my last surgery (colorectal cancer stage lll). Everyday I would ask my husband to see if it had arrived in the mail. I finally got the energy to check my Amazon account (I had preordered it) only to find out about it not coming anytime soon. BTW I’m doing fine, and I’m cancer free as of now. I will be having my regular checkup with blood work and CT scans in two weeks. I’m very optimistic about the results.

But I digress. I am rereading the books now (I’m of two minds about ordering the hardback of the last one) and it is almost better than the first time because I just inhaled them. I know now what is going on better and have more time to mull over portents for the future. So if you have the time I would start with book one.

Great books, great show. I have read through A Feast For Crows. I liked it albeit less than the others. ASOS was the best so far.

The ballots for the 2013 Emmy Awards have been submitted by the show.
Who do you think deserve a nomination, and who do you think was left off?

Supporting Actor: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion), Kit Harington (Jon Snow)
Supporting Actress: Emilia Clarke (Daenerys), Natalie Dormer (Margaery), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn), Lena Headey (Cercei), Sibel Kekilli (Shae)
Guest Performer: Ciarán Hinds (Mance Rayder), Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell)
The nominees this year will be announced on July 15.

On the left off list…
Charles Dance (Tywin)
Maisie Williams (Arya)

On the list my favs are…
Peter Dinklage
Lena Headey
Diana Rigg

Some of those are silly. Kit??? Really??

I think Lena and NCW should be the front runners this year. It almost isn't fair to have Dinklage in there as he has the best lines virtually every episode!

If you've read the books I'd love to hear your theory on who is mum is, which has been foreshadowed a bit in the books, with several red herrings.
Though on second thought this forum is maybe not the best place for it.

I do the Jon and Dany will meet at some point, but they are geographically very far away from each other.

On a side note, what do people speculate will happen in season 4, plot or additions wise?

Well we’ve got Joffrey’s wedding. I’m thinking this will be in the season opener. Will Walder Frey be invited to the nuptials? I hear the cook has a special pie (that’s to die for) he wants to serve him, it has onions, carrots, mushrooms, lots of pepper and salt, a rasher of bacon, and an unusual ingredient that only he knows. Maybe they will serve handburgers and staked fingers at the feast…mmmm taste like chicken and they’re finger licking good. Given what happened in the last wedding I don’t know how the show can outdo its self.

Jon and Sam are reunited. Poor Sam, how can a person go through everything he has and hasn’t lost an ounce of weight?

Ygritte and Jon, after their last meeting I’m thinking they will never ever get back together again. Feathering Jon will probably be a sticking point in their relationship…3 to be exact. But will they kill each other that is the question. Who does Ygritte think she is anyway…an evil dark Cupid? Besides using Jon as target practice is so…Joffery.

Arya looks like she has come to a crossroads in her life. I pity the next person who ticks her off.

Tyrion, Sansa and last but not least Shea, looks to me like troubled waters are ahead. Not to mention the ripe smell coming from Tyrion’s bed.

Theon, well maybe his sister can help him, and lift his spirits by bringing him a sausage on a stick…he must be famished. But considering what he has been through, it may be a mercy to just let him die a quick death.

Cersei and Jamie, who knows what kind of reception he will get from his maniacal sister. Throw Brienne in the mix and well… I would love to see her and Cersei exchange barbs.

Bran may be the key to the whole war if he can find this three eyed raven.

Daenerys, will she make it across the sea with all those people and their families following her? All I can say is she is going to need a lot of ships and a ton of toilet paper.

And speaking of the sea will she find Gendry lost out there?

Stannis, what (or who) will his red witch do next?

White Walkers just about the coolest men on the planet. Do they have a plan or are they just winging it?

When Bran told the story of the Rat Cook my mind went right to Frey but now that I have had time to think on it I wonder if Craster has done the same thing as Frey? I mean he sacrifices his baby boys to the White Walkers. What if one of his ancestors was the original Rat Cook? Will Gilly’s son take his place? Why do the WW need sacrifices for anyway?

The Rat Cook had cooked the son of the Andal king in a big pie with onions, carrots, mushrooms, lots of pepper and salt, a rasher of bacon, and a dark red Dornish wine. Then he served him to his father, who praised the taste and had a second slice.

Afterward the gods transformed the cook into a monstrous white rat who could only eat his own young. He had roamed the Nightfort ever since, devouring his children, but still his hunger was not sated. “It was not for murder that the gods cursed him,” Old Nan said, “nor for serving the Andal king his son in a pie. A man has a right to vengeance. But he slew a guest beneath his roof, and that the gods cannot forgive.”

Well we’ve got... *stuff*
Season 3 only got to about 2/3 of the way through book 3 (both parts) but then it also covered the end of book 2.

The TV series seems like it's getting more out of synch with the books as they go on. The books pace the key events out such that you have to reorder them slightly or end seasons with events that aren't at the end of a book. Joffrey's wedding for example, Sansa's next phase in life, as well as Littlefinger's, real Arya getting somewhere with her life at last, *fake* Arya coming into the fold, the faith of R'Hllor spreading in Westeros, the new era of the Nightwatch etc... many things are going on that they've not yet or barely touched on in the TV series.

I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't to start reading the books - from the start. The extra details you learn make the TV series more enjoyable. Even knowing what is coming up doesn't diminish the entertainment of the books.

The bad news is the White Walkers are coming.

The good news is they are keeping global warming at bay.

GOT is just like a water droplet in an ocean which is the warfare of ancient bharatiya(indian) kings. The tactics and the rules of the war will blow you up.
