Nadal's late reply to Rochus' accusations

From Marca, yesterday.

Q: Have you had the chance of seeing Olivier Rochus (sic; it was actually Christophe Rochus and indeed Nadal's response seems to be directed at Christophe) face-to-face after he implied that there might be a silent doping ban behind yours and Robin Söderling's long breaks?

A: I haven't, and if I had, I wouldn't have said a word to him. I don't feel like it has anything to do with me. It's easy to say things from the couch back home to make yourself feel relevant long after you've stopped being relevant. He had a certain relevance as a tennis player (not much either, he didn't have it in him), but if he wants to feel relevant again by saying stupid stuff, let him do what he wants. I don't feel offended when someone like Rochus says something stupid.

For the record, C. Rochus and Nadal played twice, both times in 2009, and both times he was bageled by Nadal.

The real question is, why did Nadal delay his response for so long?

The kind of arrogance Armstrong had and avoiding the real subject by tarteting directly the man is obvious here...

So, out of nowhere, with zero evidence, you would have no problem with me accusing you of something? I say you're a sexual deviant. There's just something about the things you post that leads me to believe this. Now, prove to us that you are not, and in the process do not attack me. Stay on the subject.

Put yourself in his shoes...he was out for a long period of time with an arguably career threatening injury, was struggling emotionally and wasn't sure if or when he would be back, then some guy accuses him that he is on a silent ban. Imagine how p1ssed off you would be if you were in a low point in your life and someone was making false claims about you.

Nadal ain't no dummy, he know exactly what people were saying about him. He has every right to say what he did...which was pretty tame by the way.

What would you have said?

We got no evidence of a silent ban. I think if there was one, the information would have leaked through somewhere. Innocent till guilty. In the Armstrong affair, I think there were lots of leaks that said he did roids, no one has done so for nadal. If someone has evidence to the contrary, I 'll reevaluate my stance.

So let's get this straight for once and for all you fed "fans".

Rafa served a 7 month silent ban for doping. He comes back and reaches the final of every tournament and has a BETTER first 6 months to a season than arguably any year in his career. So, is he doping immediately after serving a silent ban for it is he? LOL failed logic has failed.

You are generalizing a bit there,Rafa haters would be better.

It is the reason I put the word fans in "".

So no I wasn't generalising, I was referring to the people who call themselves fans of Federer but really have an agenda against Nadal. You will find that most people on here accusing Nadal of doping and serving silent bans are these type of people.

I didn't know that.

Now you know .. your question remains valid though :)

Side note: I actually like Nadal when he's angry .. Always loads of fun to watch .. especially on court .. like when he gets mad at the umpire, he always goes: "No. No. Pascal what are you doing?! No. I dont want to play zis!" :)

How so? How would you expect him to respond to a fellow tennis professional who has accused him of having been on a silent ban?

He could have just denied it and claimed the accusations were unfounded.

Having a go at Rochus' tennis career is hardly relevant.

I'm not defending Rochus by any means, I was just surprised about Nadal's reaction.

I thought it was Christophe Rochus who made the accusations, not Olivier? Can somebody clarify?

I believe Christophe Rochus made accusations a few years ago; Olivier said something similar more recently (some time during Nadal's injury lay-off).

Not 100% sure on this though.

Good response from Rafa. He must be sick of these accusations and ex-pros saying these kinds of things seems like the bitter stirring of old men.

It was Christophe indeed, but the article was mistaken and I failed to correct it.

Which makes Nadal's response make more sense, since he was the less successful Rochus by far, also Olivier Rochus isn't even retired.

Edited the OP.

So this guy retires and then starts mudslinging pure class. Seems to me like he got his “evidence” from trolling threads here on TW. Oh wait, he has no evidence. What a coward to wait until you will never meet any of the people you accuse again, never look at them in the eyes across the net.

I thought players are tested by WADA randomly and regularly. I read he was tested 4 times after he announced he is coming back recently.
The only reason to believe the accusation is if you are a Fed fan.

They know Fed doped last year, so they want to blame Rafa as well

That's amazing to me how people can just accuse others of things and then refuse to provide the evidence.

Two things:

1. If it was true why didn't he take it to the ATP officials along with his proof?

2. Why did he wait until he was off the tour?

Nadal was correct. He was simply trying to make himself relevant.

People have such a lack of integrity these days.

What proof would you like? Or you think Rochus would administer a PED test himself?
Besides if Nadal was serving a silent ban, it means ATP already knew. It would be in their interest not to make it public.

wrong interview dude, you're thinking about the one in l'equipe

From the Marca interview

P. A week ago the French newspaper L'Equipe published a hypothetical ranking of the top five in 2018. Nadal was not. Do not know go play for then?

R.No know, I'm in 2013 and I'm playing, that's the most important. One of the major objectives is to Rio 2016. I will work all you can to get to that appointment. After being well and hopefully can continue until 2018, but these things I can not control or imagine. A long time and I can not foresee life.

2018 seems way to optimistic.

Am I to believe that Rafa will still be playing tennis at 32? :):)
