Pistol Pete: "Murray the man to beat at the USO"

New User
Now that a lot of the pressure has been lifted, I can see him taking it again, but like Pete, I don't see him getting into 5+ territory at Wimbledon.

Interesting also to see that Roger hasn't quite decided whether the 98 will carry him into the US Open, but that's not for this thread so I'll shut up now...

If he does then I will shut up and Murray will have had the best year. But I don't agree with this 'Murray is the man to beat' thing; Djokovic has still had the best year and is still the #1 player in the world. It's not like he was a non factor on the grass either. At the very worst they both equal in terms of favourites. Djokovic has had the better HC season thus far; Unless anyone thinks Djokovic's Wimbledon performances play any factor to the upcoming US hard court swing?

As for Wimbledon, Murray might end up with 5 titles their. I don't see amazing players outside Murray or Djokovic in the next few years.

I agree, Murray is joint top favourite to win the USO. Can't discount Djokovic.

Personally I am hoping for a good Del Potro run.

I'd put him about equal with Djokovic.

You can't discount Novak, he has 6 consecutive semis and 3 consecutive finals. He'll be the favourite against anyone except Andy, those matches are always 50-50 on hardcourt.

Well Murray IS the defending champ, AND demolished the #1 in their last slam.

That said, Wimbledon and USO are completely different surfaces and Djokovic is even better on HC.

Personally I think Djokovic will take this one. Nadal has a small, but significant chance depending on how he changes his play in the tournaments leading to USO. Problem is that he historically rarely does well in this leg of the year except at the USO, and that his changes tend to be under the hood rather than sweeping ones, the latter which IMO is necessary if he wants to win anything.

I see Murray as the slight favorite in a match on DecoTurf against Djokovic, but he is also more prone to an upset than Djokovic is. So I give them both an equal shot. And I think Del Potro is capable of beating Nadal, Federer AND one of Djokovic/Murray. I don't think this one is a definite for one of the top 4 just yet, unlike most of the recent Slams.

I agree with you. Djokovic is still the best player in the world, especially on hard court. Murray deserve to be the second favorite before Nadal and Federer (who is more a Darkhorse), but he isn't an all dominant player as Federer, Nadal or Djokovic have been in 2011.

As for Murray potential number of Wimbeldon titles, I don't see amazing grass players but Murray isn't one either. He was short against Verdasco, who played very well but isn't a great grass court player. Beside Murray is 26 now, and Falstaff showed that all players won the bulk of their major titles at a younger age. Lendl, the guys with whom we compare the career path, had already won 4 slams and 5 WTF at this age. Connors, the other outliner, had already won 5 of his 8 majors. Based on these datas, it's not impossible for Murray to reach 5-6 majors overall (provided he wins 3 more until 28), but he certainly won't be winning Wimbledon for the next 4 years.

I think this USO will answer a lot of questions, because right now we dont know for sure who the top player is. On paper its Djokovic, due to his consistency, but aside from Nadal on clay, nobody has been dominating the season.

So I dont think there is a "man to beat" at this USO, its more up in the air. But the winner of the USO will become the man to beat for the rest of the season

Pistol Pete better be renamed Captain obvious for this one..

Murray's the defending champion and winner of the last major, holding the ttles of the fastes 2 surfaces in majors. That's were he's at his best.

Yeah, unless he meets Verdasco or someone similar (Delbonis, Fognini,...) can finish him of without choking.

I'm loving this new Murray hater meme. When Roger, Rafa or Nole win a 5 set match on their way to winning a slam it's a sign of their indefatigability and mental strength.

Murray gets taken to 5 on his way to winning a slam and it becomes a cause for concern.

Murray beat Verdasco and now holds a 9-1 record against him. I'm sure Murray is sh1tting bricks at the thought of playing Fernando in New York.

Delbonis and Fognini? :) I'll crack the jokes mate.

Indeed we will mate.

Let's just put it that way: last week, on clay, if I had to chose to put all my money on Delbonis or Fognini vs Murray. I would pick the first 2..:)

Why are you saying "hate" right away? I just think those 2 are producing better tennis than Murray at the moment.

It's not unusual for a slam winner to win a few though 5 setter against second tiers players, and Murray is certainly not afraid to play Verdasco again. Yet, it shows that Murray wasn't playing at a level of dominance which could reasonably make us believe that he will win the next 4 Wimbledons. After all neither Nadal nor Federer were extended to 5 sets at the beginning of their dominations, but only near the end of it.

You are dead wrong here, Batz.

Many here, particularly the Sampras fanboys, were highly critical of Benneteau for "choking" against Federer.

And have you forgotten the treatment Djokovic got on this forum after he beat Wawrinka in January? I can assure you most people were not talking about his mental strength.

Fair enough Sid - but I think those are the exceptions. I certainly don't recall any posts leading up to RG that said Nole might struggle there because he was taken to 5 sets at the AO - or any threads before the 2012 USO that said Roger might struggle because he was taken to 5 @ SW19 - do you? That's what's being said about Murray.

Murray won a slam 2 weeks ago, Beating the world number 1 in the final and extending his grass winning streak to 18 - but 2 guys playing in a couple of piddling clay events are playing better tennis than Murray?

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Bookies have them tied or nole as very slight favourite - I make that about right.

A good Delpo run is most definitely on the cards if he can take his SW19 form into the US Open Series.

I hope either Murray, Federer or Del Potro wins the US Open....Murray to shut the haters up, Federer to shut the haters up and Del Potro because I believe he has the tools to demolish any competition.

Honorable mentions, Delbonis, Karlovic, Janowicz, Isner and Tsonga to have a deep run

Djokovic and Nadal are always favorites before anyone jumps on me.

1. Murray/Djokovic
2. Del Potro? Nadal? Federer?

murray, djokovic, del potro are DEFO favourites,

any number of players could be in the outsiders column like Federer, nadal, janowicz, burdych (if he has a brain transplant), sir john of isner (if he has a talent transplant )

can raonic sort his game out ??, probably not, Tsonga and his knee is a worry, dimitrov ?..hmmm a dark horse (almost an invisible horse).

can our lantern-jawed-hero daveeeed ferrer win ?..umm...NO.

Delbonis really?
He looks like a guy who hits way to many errors, and with that long loopy forehand technique it's not going to get any better on the faster hard courts imo.

I think if Ferrer somehow got to the final to face Murray (which I think won't happen, since Nadal is winning the US Open), Ferrer would have a much greater chance than if he faced Nadal, ***** or Federer. Their h2h is close and their last hard-court match had a final set tiebreak, and Ferrer had a match point. (Although Murray didn't play well in the first set.)

As a Murray fan I will say, Murray was apalling, that whole match, so if Ferrer couldn't beat him there then he won't beat him on form. But I agree out of the big 4 he's the most likely to lose to Ferrer

I'd put Murray at joint 5th favorite with Ferrer behind;

1). Djokovic (2nd player of the year, best hard-court player)
2). Nadal (best player of the year, owns Murray on all surfaces)
3). Del-Potro (the in-form man of the moment, won USO before)
4). Federer (never discount a guy that's won it 5 times)
5). Ferrer + Murray

Murray as high as 5th favourite? I guess it's better than the 7th favourite you made him for Wimbledon:

Putting Murray after Federer? Murray is in tip top shape and Federer looks like he can lose to pretty much anyone. Seriously if those two meet, Murray will win with an embarrassing scoreline. I think it's like this:

1)Murray
2)Djokovic
3)Nadal
4)Del Potro
5)Berdych
6)Federer
7)Ferrer

Oh, Berdych, I forgot him - he has a great record against Murray on hard. I forgot about Tsonga too.

So I'd rank it;

1). Djokovic
2). Nadal
3). Del-Potro
4). Federer
5). Berdych
6). Tsonga + Murray + Ferrer all have roughly equal chance

It's a possibility; it's Djokovic's weakest surface whilst on the other hand it's Murray's strongest. Their is a possibility of someone else coming through but that's a slim % at best. Lastly, the grass court field isn't really at an all time high right now. The only thing that's against him is that Wimbledon favours baseliners - like pretty much every tournament; Murray could lose to some guy playing off his head (enter Verdasco) but those 'on fire' players need to be in the right place at the right time. I give Murray 3 Wimbledon's at least. Don't applaud me for loving Murray Batz; I'm only being generous because the future of tennis looks very bleak.

1. Murray/Djokovic/Del Potro (If forehand is revved up)

Correct me if you think I'm wrong.

Last won USO: 2009

Murray ~

Murray won't win the US Open unless there is a Hurricane and/or Novak has another 5 hour marathon in the semis.

I guess that must explain Murray's 4-0 record v Nole in US Open Series events - it was windy and/or Nole was tired every time.

Keep stretching for those excuses.

There's a good chance of a Noleray rematch at the US Open and if it happens, well that's a tough one to call but my money would be on El Nolio. I definitely see those two as the main guys to get to the final, but I have a sneaky suspicion that one of them won't get there (if anything, the tennis Gods will not grant us yet another Noleray final so soon, for the sake of interesting tennis).

Some things I would like to see at this US Open:

Another impressive run from del Potro and some sort of evolution from Pony to Pegasus -- his version of Jesusfed, Nole 2.0 or .. just Nadal, lol.

For the young guns to continue to progress with some high profile victories.

A meeting between Scotland and Spain.
