They seem remarkably similar players these guys: good, consistent backhands, their forehands pack a punch, they are very nimble around the court, their serves are OK, their returns are great, and, most importantly (in this baseline era), both are not afraid to attack the net and are have great touch when they're up there.

What are the more subtle differences in their games?

And who has the most talent/potential.

Due to typical FOM'ing TT, I expect Fognini to run away with this poll.

Having said that, I pick neither of them to ever get to ever get past Round Four of any Slam again before they retire (not exactly going out on a limb there, lol).

Nishikori by far. Fognini can play insane when he's at his best but those performances are very few and far between. Nishikori on the other hand is extremely consistant in his results. He doesn't have the lapses in concentration that an on-off player like Fognini has. And when he's playing at his best has one of the most complete games on tour. The only thing that has held him back is injuries.

Talent they are probably even but Kei has the potential to be a much more regular contender than Fognini ever could, the guy is very inconsistent while Nishikori has shown glimpses that he could maintain a high level for a long period.

Nishikori. Seems to be the better mover of the two, and he is more consistent. Has a little more pop on his shots as well. I just hope he can stay healthy.

Nishikori I think. He's younger, has better groundstrokes imo and doesn't choke when playing higher ranked opponents. The only thing is that he HAS to stop getting injured all the time. He's only playing half of the season it seems. It's hard to make a decent breakthrough if you're injured all the time.

In terms of talent Fognini by a mile, the guy doesn't even look like he is trying, effortless power and great touch as well. Nishikori will definitely end up with a better career because he is more consistent and robotic as he is a product of the Robotieri academy.

I think nishikori is very strong mentally. I would key the two things holding him back as being regularly injured and sometimes a poor serve. I think his changes in serving technique will help him with that. In spite of this serve difficulties, he has a great hold game, his play on the second shot is fantastic.

Fognini is good, and I like him quite a bit, but he seems to rely on long odds and inspired tennis a bit too much. I don't see him playing consistently or grinding when necessary to maintain a high ranking or get seeded highly in slams.
