Los Angeles Tennis Clubs?

My wife and I are moving to LA in a couple months. Apart from finding a place to live, finding a new club will be high on my list of priorities and will factor into where we live. While we haven't settled on any part of LA yet, our inclination is to stay somewhere on the Mid-City to the West Side of things.

Suggestions welcome and many thanks in advance!

If you could be a little more specific that would help. Are you looking primarily for purely a tennis club/center or a country club with tennis or a golf and tennis club? I mean on the Westside, a few that come to mind are the Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades (high end), Palisades Tennis Center and Westwood Tennis Center (which are public, but run clinics, lessons, and are well maintained, with good availability of people to hit with). I know of several other options, but let me know if you're looking for something else or more specific.

In addition, public courts are abundant especially on the Westside, but can become busy during peak hours. There's the LA Tennis Club in downtown or LA Tennis Center at UCLA. Plenty of options.

Hey there, thanks for responding!

To clarify, I'm not looking for golf at all. Just tennis. A club/center would be ideal—somewhere with a good number of courts that are lit, since I'll probably have to play after work. Not looking for clinics, but the occasional hit with a pro would be good. In SF, I mostly hit with 4.5/5.0 guys but as long as I can get regular hits in, I'm happy. I'm somewhat spoiled here, as I live/work within 2 miles of my club and I usually stop in for a hit almost every day. And I'm also not looking to be competitive in leagues and all that...just want to have fun hits.

Yes, then I'd most definitely recommend Westwood Tennis Center in Westwood, Palisades Tennis Center in Pacific Palisades, or Reed Park in Santa Monica. Just type them into google and look them up. See if they fit along the lines of what you're looking for. If not, then let me know and I can give you some other suggestions.

In addition to Palisades and Westwood, Cheviot Hills is also nearby and part of the same network. The same card/nominal annual membership fee gets you access at all three locations (plus other courts in the City Of Los Angeles group of facilities) . Shotgun 21 Tournament at Palisades is a must-see/must-play event (hopefully is happens again this year). Palisades has a great vibe and good staff. The South Bay area has a very active tennis community, if you decide to venture just a bit farther. West End is my recommendation for the serious player, but requires initiation and monthly dues.

West End is nice. Of course there are so many public courts here in the South Bay a club isn't that important. I probably have 40 courts within 20 minutes (if PCH isn't a parking lot) from me.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm used to paying dues...just depends on how much they are and how high they are. Do you guys know what West End charges? Also, it appears that it's in Redondo Beach...how's the travel time to say, downtown L.A.?

It's a poke from downtown, especially with morning and early evening traffic. If you are downtown, you have more convenient options. Personally, I would go nuts with the drive and the traffic. If you decide to live in the South Bay, it's a different story.

Hi, Just moved to la (south bay). Could you perhaps suggest a place to find some good pick up games? 4.0-4.5 level. I mostly like doubles but willing to play singles too. So far Wilson park is close to me, and also went to some high school on redondo beach.

+1. With the advent of the 105 things are better - but any little thing can completely foul things up and make it miserable. I've seen some real mind blowing interpretations of driving on that stretch of the 110 north.

Not sure there are many places people just hang out at looking to play - everyone has their regular playing partners.

To meet people I'd suggest playing a few ladders or tournaments and hope to make some friends. Good luck.

You didn't say where you moved from. Where were you and what was the tennis scene like?

Thanks, I believe I did turn it on now. I moved from Oahu, home courts were Kaneohe. The scene was simply a bunch of good people playing good tennis and drinking good beers (IPA's).

So far, I signed up for the Torrance flex league, but there are only about 3 players registered...
Also found the South bay tennis ladder.

The level wasn't that good, but at least I got to play a couple times. Unfortunately all the guys I played with so far only like singles... I don't get it.

I will head down to ALta Vista this weekend, I heard you just show up and play (round robin or something). They only have B-C on the weekends, A-B is on Tuesday mornings....guess all the A-B's don't work or something??

Anyway, hit me up anytime if you need a 4th. Still looking for a good doubles game.

I have played at all of these and I love them. If you want I can give you a name of a good coach through email. The nicest courts are definetly cheviot and they have a nice shop too. They host liveball once a week and you should definitely play it once its alot of fun.
