real gut coming:), prince natural 16, just strung 55/50 with co-focus 1.18; The coil memory is so strong that light prestretch with body weight doesn't work at all...

first session, a little boardy but pretty nice I can swing out. Spin not as good as 51/48 global gut/yonex poly tour pro 120 hybrid in same frame, maybe tension.

Realistically, there's no way you'll get the same spin with mains strung 4 lbs tighter.

But as it loses tension over time you may very well find it gets spinnier.

hmm, what tension difference gives max spin?

I meant the difference in mains tension between your current setup and your previous one.

There is no such thing as "max spin" tension AFAIK, but the looser your mains are the spinnier they get. So if "max spin" exists, perhaps it's somewhere around 20 lbs. And your crosses should generally be 2-5 lbs looser than your mains (although some folks do go even far looser).

got it, i strung main at 55lbs just to compensate the 10% gut tension loss after trying 51lbs. Hopefully it settles soon.

Does this setup get stiff after a length of time?

I had to stop playing for 3-4 months due to a back issue. When I hit after the layoff, my strings seemed VERY stiff. That could be attributed to my lack of playing though so not sure.

I string both my and my wife's rackets with the pacgut at 51 and the co-focus at 47... my wife doesn't break strings and if I don't remember to restring hers, she'd just keep playing and playing...

Since I wasn't string my racquets due to my layoff, I didn't think to do hers, and she just doesn't complain.

She came down with tennis elbow (so now SHE has downtime :( ) but I wonder if playing on these strings for 4 months may have created a very stiff stringbed and attributed to her tennis elbow?

She is a 4.5 and hits the ball very square and solid ALL THE TIME (I hate her), plays 3x weekly so tennis elbow is a real suprirse (hits with a Volkl Organix 8 )

How often should I restring her racquet? Mine is no issue because I fray/break strings before they go bad, she doesn't.

Just how weatherproof are they?

Bringing back a dead thread.

If any of you wondered just how weatherproof are these Pacific Classic. I've got an answer for you:

Weather:
It was a combination of mist and heavy/dense fog, enough to get the lines a bit wet, and turned the courts just one shade darker. The mist was ever-so-slightly palpable on your face. And enough to play with damp balls.

Duration:
~1 hour and 15mins. Warm-up and played one set.

Result:
I had maybe (at most!) 5 hours with these mains, and it went from fresh gut to this in ~ 1hour of mist/dense fog:

IMAG0221_zpsdab7b0f1.jpg

If I remember correctly, they started to feeling gummy after 30mins and snapped a little past 60mins.

You're probably wondering why I played these strings in misty/dense fog conditions. I knew it was going to ruin the gut. These were on a frame that I longer use. So the gut was going to sit in this frame for an eternity, or I can do a little experiment. And I chose the latter.

Has it really been 5 months??

What are you using for a backup setup? I've settled on PPA 1.25 x CoF 1.18. It's much softer than Pac mains but imo the spin is almost spot-on.

As a back-up for misty conditions, I am using Ashaway monogut ZX full bed, plays well from baseline but I still reserve judgment on net play

I have been hitting with my K95 6.1 18x20 with the Pac classic 16L/msv co focus 1.18 and been loving the comfort and spin it gets. I strung the gut at 50 and poly at 46 and it did take maybe about 5-6 hours to see the awesome spin like smasher described

I have another racquet strung with the Yonex graphite pro tour poly 1.25 at 46 and it hits real nice with more spin and control right off the bat but don't have the nice touch like with the gut

I am still deciding on which one to play with. I am leaning towards the yonex. I will try the yonex for my singles league match this weekend

I'm using this with thicker CoFocus. Great for doubles. Super comfy. Strung 52/47 but will probably go up to 54/49 next time in my Exo3 100.

classic gut 16L for me as with most of the others, some are using the 17g version also

I use the 17g and have had real good results with it. I only break it on clay.

Tough Gut was good when it was the copper stuff, but the newer on-copper version doesn't seem...as 'tough'...

I've tried them all (except for that fancy $95 bull gut). The only one worth playing was Prime. The guys on this thread play Classic which I found lifeless by comparison and broke very quickly. The best I ever tried was Pacific imperial blue spiral. That was like butter, but not made any more.

A large part of Classic's appeal is its value for money. To each their own, but imo guts costing 50% more don't play 50% better.

That said, I accept that the differences may be more noticeable in a full-bed setup.

ok, thanks, looking to get some for the uk summer.
never tried pacific gut,

compare it with performaxx whisper-touch (my opinion used to be best gut- crispier than babolat pre bt7/wilson)

memories of using the gut/co-focus combo

just an update, have bout 10 hours or so on my classic 16L/1.18 co-focus and it does seem to keep playing better and better each time out. Played a few sets with a buddy of mine and before i used to play my regular Tourna big hitter blue at 53-54 we used to play very even sets.

Last night with my gut/poly setup i breezed thru 6-3,6-2 Seems the 6.1 95 18x20s really take well to the gut/poly setup as my returns/defense/serves have improved some

It has started fraying ever so slightly. I think i will be happy if i can get 20 hours of this setup

About to buy some cofocus- but I'm wondering does this string change characteristics by the colour.
I've only used white- just wondering if the red/light blue have slight characteristics, which one you prefer

I'd stay with white, I'd rather not gamble on colors especially if they come in reels.

just put on the 5 set of 1.18 co-focus cross on my racquet.

I have prince gut 16 and co-focus dark blue.

This thread won't die.

So I may as well jump in.

I've been back into tennis for four years now after 23 year hiatus.

Starting back playing 4 years ago, syngut (mostly ogsm) then some multi's and now trying full bed gut. I've never really used poly, but now for the least year or so I've been battling TE/GE and a shoulder all of which have slowly been getting better.

I'm mid-range 4.0, all court, moderate topsin, solid volleys/netgame.
Playing a Microgel Rad MP (95 inch) at just under 12 oz, ~325 sw.
I usually string the above strings at #58, sometimes lower for cool weather.

How is this setup on the arm/elbow?

I'm very interested to try a gut hybrid but not sure which direction to go, OR IF I EVEN SHOULD. I like the idea of added spin potential and saving some money, but the poly scares me as I don't want to play dead strings while the gut just keps plugging along.

I don't keep much poly around but i have a few options on hand already (Pro Line II-17 being the "best", likely, as well as Prince Tour16, Polylon16 and some Moto that came with free glide hybrid). Maybe I'll get a set of Co-Focus. I have some Glide to try (got it free) as well as several syn/multi options.

Normal full gut (Klip 17g) at 58, what tensions would one recommend?

Your story is very similar to mine. I am now happily and completely TE/GE free thanks to this thread and string bed. It just plays so nice. Get the good stuff, Wilson Natural. I range between 52/48 and 55/51 in Prestige MP. I switched from co focus to mosquito bite recently, but both are great. You will never look back!

Agree 100% - though I'm using the Pac Classic Gut. I recommend keeping the tension down - I'm at 52-gutmain, 48-cross co-focus. Nothing to keep you from trying this out...

I just searched this thread for the word "distort" but did not find anything. Anyone playing gut/co-focus or other copoly crosses notice hoop distortion after many hours have been logged on these stringbeds?

Has anyone here tried the 1.23 or even 1.27 as a cross?

I'm asking because I seriously think the thin 1.18 is saw through my gut fast. With crosses doing marginally... nothing, I don't suspect 1.23/1.27 would have huge feel/playability impact, right?

I've used the 1.23 as a cross for 1.30 gut, but not 1.25 mains. I doubt you'll notice much difference.

So go ahead, be our gunea pig! ;)

EDIT: you're playing with your PS85, right? If so, I'd suggest switching to 1.30x1.23 because that open pattern will facilitate the sawing you're experiencing. If so, thicker crosses will help, as well as thicker mains.

Yeah I'll probably just do that. Thanks.

Yes, I am using the PS 6.0 85. Even when I was using the BLX90 before, I thought it was sawing through my gut mains really fast...

Also, I don't know how much of a guinea pig I'll be. I mean, it's the crosses. Chances are, I'll come back and say: "It's the same s***."

Having a thick cross poly string will kill the feel of the gut main more IMO, I think 16 gauge gut main with 16l/17 poly is probably the ideal combo.

Tbh, I didn't have any issues at all regarding the feel when using a 1.30 x 1.23 setup. The difference in the diameter of the crosses is only 0.04mm, so it's not enough to kill the feeling of the mains.

question:
I use prince gut 16(it is the same gut as wilson and babolat) for main and restring poly cross every 10hrs till main breaks.

If initial tension on the gut is 55lbs. How much tension is left on the gut main when I restring the cross the 2nd the 3rd the 4th time?

Does anyone restring poly cross only at all?

should be the same after each restringing I think… Gut loses some tension off the stringer and minimal tension after that, but after that it retains its tension almost completely. This is part of the reason why gut plays well until it breaks.

I do the same... My Mains end up lasting 80hrs. But I know the Gut lose a little tension in the first hour or two. So I am stinging my Gut 2lbs more today to deal with this.

No! That's a terrible practice.

even half set of good gut is not cheap. you throw away the gut after poly dies?

No I play until my gut mains snap. The gut should mask whatever "deadness" there is after the poly dies.

Besides, they're in the crosses, strings in crosses contribute next to nothing other to serve as a place holder.

my personal experience is when the poly goes dead the power increases and the ball goes out more often. Putting in a new set of poly cross often refreshes the feel and fixes the problem. I also mount the racquet before cutting the cross. Looks like opinions are divided.

That is the way to do it (if you were to cut out the crosses only). However, I wouldn't do it myself and it would certainly raise an eyebrow or two if I see someone else do it.

i have been restringing my co-focus crosses at about 10-12 hours usually. Co-focus is pretty lively to begin with and when it loses tension the stringbed gets pretty springy and it becomes hard to control volleys and service returns (usually with hard servers only)

With the fresh crosses the spin and control is back and have confidence to swing out more

everyone says its a bad practice but i haven't noticed any adverse effects on the frame

On my first Gut / Poly job, I actually popped the CoFocus first.

I also string my Cross 7lbs lighter than the mains and this causes the length to shorten a little.

Most high level players replace frames every 12 to 18 months anyway. The frames themselves don't stay the same.

Why I restring the Poly Cross Only....

Here is what happens to my crosses if I don't cut and restring after about 10 hours.

This was strung --> Pac 16L/CoFocus 17 - 60/53lbs

See how the GUT just barely Dented. I don't consider this notched.... Still perfectly good.

What Tension for a ProStaff 6.0 85"

Promised to string my friend's racket in the GUt-CoFocus Hybrid.

The normal tension is 55-65 - he plays at 60 in a syn-gut.

I would normally string this at 52main, 49 gut - make sense? Or should I go higher?

There's no right or wrong tension, it's all preference.

I play with a 4 pounds difference between the mains and the crosses. 53lbs in the mains, 49lbs in the crosses.
