The Greatest Spectator Sport On Earth 2013-2014 Thread (NCAA Football)

Noticed there was an NFL thread but no NCAA thread so had to remedy that. The greatest sport on the planet is only 1 month away.

A couple early season predictions:

SEC will be between SCAR, Bama and LSU, I think SCAR will be 12-0 and LSU/Bama will both be 11-1 heading into SEC champ. I'll go out on a limb and say 13-0 SCAR gets to the national championship.

Ohio State is overrated. Won a lot of close games without the pressure of the games meaning anything. Think they drop 2 games in conference, and Wisconsin (go Badgers) drop 1 in conference game and face Nebraska again in the champ (Michigan is overrated). That game would be a tossup, depending on how Nebraska's D develops.

Pac12 UCLA will be a surprise team and threaten for a pac12 title. Oregon still can't get by Stanford and I think Stanford gets to the rose bowl again

ACC is very very weak. Clemson would be a national title contender without their brutal schedule. I still think they win the ACC. Miami is overrated again, and so is Florida State.

Big12 has some pretty strong teams. Okla. St. is under the radar and could be a national title contender, Oklahoma has a power offense and Texas is back. I think Okla St. takes it though. Baylor a big darkhorse.

Louisville is the only decent team in the conference formerly known as the big east and will make the orange bowl.

For my heisman pick, I'm taking Mariota from Oregon.

Johnny Football is better than Mariota but Mariota is not facing NFL caliber defenses each week. SEC West is too tough, gamecocks are loaded w/ an easy schedule.

Great thread idea. Saturday's are awesome in the fall: wake up early and play tennis - after setting the DVR for College Gameday; see who Lee picks - call bookie in Vegas (just kidding - but he is right 70% of the time); watch great football.

I think SCAR will be 12-0 and LSU/Bama will both be 11-1 heading into SEC champ. I'll go out on a limb and say 13-0 SCAR gets to the national championship.
The Ol' Ball Coach will mess it up. Unless Clowney plays offense and runs back kicks too. :)

Look at the schedule though, if they beat georgia @ their place (severely overrated) who will they lose to? Florida and Clemson at home are the only possibilities. Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri are all 2-4 win teams.

Thread bump to re-establish precedence.

SEC already exciting (Ole Miss-Vandy)...can't wait for the cupcake sweepstakes to be done and get on to the real meat of the fall schedule.

Good on you, Clemson.

Looking forward to Georgia/SC and Michigan/ND next week. God, I love college football.

How is an American sport the greatest on the earth/planet ???

Why not universe or galaxy then ? ;) Or world history :)

Johnny Football is also an arrogant jerk who will have a massive target on his head this season. I for one welcome that.

Youth and fame...two ingredients for a stew of overblown self-importance. I'm doubting many Heisman voters will ever again vote for a freshman after his recent wild ride through the headlines. A two-quarter "suspension" for him was a total joke!

Meanwhile, great game at Howard's Rock last night! We were a bad FG snap away from an OT thriller. Clemson's defense seems a bit improved and will keep them unbeaten until October 19.

Sorry but no. NCAA "football" is not even close to "the greatest sport on the planet".

Not even close.

I agree. If he sad "the best sport in the US", it would be fine. But "on the planet"???? Sorry but no. Must be pretty ignorant to claim something like that.

Go 'Noles! Give Pitt a firm welcome to the ACC tonight!

OP's title refers to the whole experience the fans get on campus when attending games, for many of them the chance to return over the years for rekindling the spirit of probably the best four or more years of their lives. There really is nothing like that angle in any other sport!

Thanks!

To put it in perspective personally, I probably attended more USO sessions in my years living near Queens and going to both Forest Hills and Flushing than the number of games I saw at FSU. If I were to go to a USO now it wouldn't hold half the power over me that going into the Doak would. I saw a Stanley Cup series-winning OT goal in the Nassau Coliseum. Special ? Hell, yeah...but I'm not headed there to reminisce before the Isles move to Brooklyn. If they were to tear down the Doak, you can bet I would get a ticket.

I was at FSU before the Bowden era and the last year we went 0-11. Cheering for first downs was the norm. Bringing non-fan co-students that caught the fever still reminds me how special the atmosphere could become. It really can't get any better!

What a debut for 'Noles QB Winston! I should have trashed my fear of freshmen QBs after Manziel's success last year but this may be an even better start...25 of 27 and accounted for all 4 TDs in the first half. Bravo!

Calm down. It is called hyperbole. Only on message forums do people take posts like this seriously.

Game day is just a beautiful day, isn't it?

Miss my days of waking up at 8 am to start tailgaiting for Penn State games. Been to many sporting events like yourself, and nothing compares at all. It's not just a game it's a whole day of awesomeness.

Good to see your 'Noles crush Pitt. :D

That is the most outrageous statement EVER posted on the internet.

What! My post cannot be the most outrageous ever because your post insinuating my post is outrageous is even more outrageous. I demand satisfaction. I challenge you to a duel. Accept or proclaim women's beach volleyball to be the greatest spectator sport ever.

Did he throw a pass longer than 10 yards though?

Yes, two scoring TD's over 20 yards without much if any YAC. C'mon, the kid was brilliant for a first-time starter in a road conference game. I know Clemson looked great but that's a veteran throwing in a game plan built for that kind of experience. Fisher is smart enough to save bigger game plans for days when he'll need the confidence he's immediately building.

I'm happy for you and all Nittany Lions fans that you guys seem to be rebounding rather quickly from the Sandusky chaos. Keep going in the right direction!

Get the facts straight.....
First it would be Football...not our football but Soccer. That is the world beater by far.
Second is Formula 1 Racing.
NCAA football and everything else sucks in comparison to these sports and their fans.

I barely saw any of the game. That was just a comment I heard this morning.

Arm strength and accuracy won't be issues for Winston...in his spare time he hurls 90+MPH aspirins for the baseball team and fills in in right field where he has a cannon...yahoo sports has a video of him throwing a dart to third base to gun down a Clemson baserunner trying to go first-to-third on a hit-and-run. Check out the baserunner's reaction.

Yeah, I'm really happy with O'Brien and what he's done for us. Has brought a great system and our QB's coaching had improved immensely, Jay Paterno was just no good as a QB coach. Let too many highly touted QB's not live up to their potential. O'Brien on the other hand molded McGloin into a NFL third stringer somehow! :D

Is it Saturday yet?

Gators gave that game away. THREE TOs in the Red Zone?? Miami only converted 1 3rd down the entire game.

So far, SEC East looking as bad as I suspected.

It was a nice bounceback for the Dawgs today with Murray and Gurley decimating the ClowneyCocks.

The West is definitely the deeper division and has been for years but Georgia will test the better defenses and hopefully settle down on their own defense.

Interesting games the last 2 weekends. ACC gets two nice wins over the SEC (Clemson last week and the U this week). The Dawgs get a 'must win' over the Gamecocks. Texas, who many picked to win the Big 12, gets doubled-up by BYU...the same BYU that lost to lowly UVA last week...the same UVA that took an Oregon beat down yesterday. And any day ND loses is a good day. Still, Bama looks better than the rest (nothing new under the sun).

Looks like OK State will be in big trouble with the NCAA. Paying players, campus escorts having sex with recruits...nobody shows these boys a good time like the Big 12 and SEC! :)

I didn't even catch USC's game yesterday. *FACEPALM* Did USC just sleepwalk that game? There should be no way that WSU hangs around, let alone wins. PAC-12 South is really up for grabs with the winner being the PAC-12 North's lapdog.

Kiffin's 2 QB system needs to be scrapped. No completion over 8 yards against the COUGARS? Kiffin needs to be scrapped while we're at it.

Texas had no business being ranked that high......BYU exposed the teasips for the fraud they are. Lucky if they win 5 this yr.......time for Brown to move on.

The buck stops there...Brown just fired DC Diaz and has brought in highly experienced Greg Robinson to try and stop the bleeding.

Yesterday was the first time in a generation that ND, Texas, USC and Florida all lost on the same day. Not sure if there's much hope for any of them except the Gators.

Texas needs to get rid of Mack and move on. Amazing how far they've fallen over the last few years.

Glad to see my Dawgs get a W over the Cocks on Saturday night. Our defense is still highly suspect but we've got some studs on the offensive side of the ball. We're going to have to outscore people to win this year. Next big test is LSU in 3 weeks between the hedges.

BYU gained 550 yards rushing vs Texas. Thats about like Oklahoma throwing for 550 yards during the Barry Switzer wishbone period.

Greg Robinsons not gonna help much. He was the D Coordinator at Michigan when they had the worst defense in the programs history.

Granted Robinson is a re-tread hire but he's got way more experience (even winning @ Austin) than Diaz, who was under fire even before Saturday's debacle. It just gives Brown a little more time before he does the honorable thing and does his best imitation of Bobby Darin...please Mack, take the knife!
