Murray back op done

It'll be interesting to see how Murray will recover, he is the first of the top players to have a surgery. Even Nadal and Federer, both of whom have had serious issues for a lot longer than Murray (knee and back respectively) haven't resorted to this.

He got a backbone implanted, finally.

That remark might have raised the odd smile a year ago when he was still seeking his first Slam.

Since then he has won the Olympic gold medal in front of his home crowd and won his first 2 Slams including a Wimbledon title. So I don't think jokes about him needing a backbone are still relevant in any way, do you?

it is possible that Murray never be the same after this back surgery. Back surgeries have very unpredictable outcomes. Murray may still have pain for the rest of his life

Djokovic apparently had throat surgery a few years ago to relieve a breathing problem.

Even Nadal and Federer, both of whom have had serious issues for a lot longer than Murray (knee and back respectively) haven't resorted to this.

It's obviously a risk but I guess he thought it was worth taking. Contrary to what many people believe on here, Murray almost always plays down the seriousness of any injury issues. The back problem was clearly getting worse and he must have felt that leaving it untreated was not going to work if he wanted to continue playing top level tennis. I'm sure he took the best possible medical advice before deciding to go under the knife.

We can now only wait and hope that the decision to undergo surgery will help him to get back to full fitness sooner rather than later.

Well, look at what accomplishing all that did to his back. Seems like a backbone is more than relevant. Especially if he wants to win anything with Nadal lurking around.

yes i agree with you..Nadal is a terrible matchup for the Scottish..Therefore Murray could defeat Djokovic..I'd prefer not to facing Djokovic every time in a major to get the trophy..:)
Murray had a decent head to head with the serbian..His game, expecially on HC seems to adapt perfectly and he has two weapon to match Joker:
FIRST SERVE and RETURNING
important thing is that inside out forehand of Djokovic is neutralized by slice cross court backhand..serbian struggle with a ball without pace to push..
other important arm is backhand slice DTL
if murray avoid the diagonal of the forehand has a chance to beat djokovic

This must explain why Murray's hardcourt slam record against Novak is so much better than his hardcourt slam record versus Rafa. Oh wait - it isn't, in fact the opposite is true.

And I've still to see Novak be bagelled by Murray for the loss of just FOUR POINTS.

You Murrayites will never shut up about this will you? It's absolutely pathetic the way you cling to that win in a 500 event in Tokyo like it happened in a slam final.

Murray is 4-13 vs Nadal and 8-11 vs Djokovic. While he has potential to challenge both it is plainly obvious which he is the tougher opponent for.

A 3 set win in a 500 final, even ending with a bagel, hardly compensates for losing 3 straight slam semis with the gain of a mere 2 sets that same year. I doubt Djokovic would ever beat Murray in 3 slam events in the same year. Murray has always played him virtually equal. As it is they have barely played in slams. I believe their first ever slam meeting was the 2011 Australian Open final.

No - what's pathetic is you getting your knickers in a twist about a fact.

What's even more pathetic is your borderline schizophrenia whereby you object to others saying anything you deem even remotely negative about Rafa whilst simultaneously posting bollocks about him that wouldn't be out of place at www.ihatenadal.com

Even with that I still always feel Murray has a good chance to beat Djokovic. Especialy now that Djokovic seems to be mentally losing it vs both Nadal and Murray. I see Murray's return once it gets going as more of an additional negative for Djokovic who will now have to worry about 2 people who have the momentum in their matchups with him now, and a positive for Nadal (who wont neccessarily have to play his toughest rival Djokovic in each event anymore). Ultimately only time will tell though.

I don't disagree with any of this mate - all fair comment.

I've said since he won the USO that the last big test for Lendlised Murray is Rafa - and on grass at that, where Rafa has pretty much owned Andy in his own backyard.

It's been way too long since they last met.

I honestly don't think Murray will beat Nadal on hard or clay if they meet. Grass is an unknown quantity for Nadal now, obviously. It may sound strange, as Nadal is the older player and the one with a lot more mileage on him, but Nadal has improved more since late 2011 (when Lendl first signed on as Murray's coach) than Murray has.

All perfectly valid views mate. I'd like to think that Murray can give Rafa some trouble on hardcourt and maybe grass. I'm not sure who has improved the most since 2011 - but you have to doff your cap to Rafa this season; he's been pretty immense since he came back.

The question on grass if Nadal will even play Murray or Djokovic. The last 2 years have been a nightmare, and one has to wonder if he can regain being a relevance on grass or not. I would love to see Nadal play Djokovic on grass again. I am sure he would gain sweet revenge and in emphatic fashion. Losing to dodgy grass courter Djokovic, the poorest grass court player to win Wimbledon in the Open Era in the 2011 Wimbledon final, was embarassing for a truly great grass court player like Nadal, and something he would rectify I am sure. Murray though would be more interesting. Nadal used to own Murray on grass, but not before Murray's newfound confidence and self belief. That would be a closer encounter if it ever happened I imagine.

The other question for Nadal is if he realistically needs to regain being a potential Wimbledon winning grass courter in order to break the slam record or not. I personally think he doesnt. He could easily win atleast another 3 French Opens, and atleast another 3 hard court majors. Regaining being a Wimbledon contender would just be a bonus.

I see Wimbledon being where Murray makes his greatest legacy. He can win more hard court slams, but his highest major count I would predict to be at Wimbledon. With Nadal floundering on grass at the moment, and Djokovic's dodgy grass court skills, he really should be the heavy favorite at Wimbledon for years and win 3-5 titles there total.

nole is bad opponent for rafa always . that's why he have won 15 matches against rafa ( no one achieved this)

Murray is bread and butter for rafa !!

that's why nadal 3-0 on grass ( Murrays best surface)

then forget about hard court .

I think hard courts is probably Murray's best surface in playing level, even though he is also an outstanding grass court player (and at his best a very good clay court player even). However given the field his greatest opportunity for success probably comes on grass. He is always a threat to win on hard courts, but it will be hard to pile up too many majors with prime Nadal and Djokovic to deal with, and other great hard court players like Del Potro, Raonic (in the future), Federer (in the past), Berdych, and Wawrinka to deal with. In any other era Murray would probably have won atleast 6 hard court majors though. While in the 90s he would have much less chance to end up with numerous Wimbledons as he does now.

No, what's pathetic is your constant need to bring up a match from 2 years ago in a 500, as if it will predict the future between these two. You do it all the time, and I am just sick of hearing it. I'm surprised you don't stroke on about the Rotterdam final between them in 2009 with the same fervency.

And you belong on Iloveandymurray.com with how you seem to home in on any comments about him that aren't glowing. It's been your job on this forum for eons now.

Sorry to interrupt this discussion of matches that are all over two years old, and before either of them had a long lay-off for injury, but anyone interested in Murray's actual operation and recovery might like to know he tweeted again - in two parts.

After spending 2 days in hospital you realise and appreciate how amazing a job carers, nurses, doctors etc do in hospitals all over the...

Rafa has had a huge comeback year after lots of injury worries, Murray is still flat on his back from surgery & Joker has got speed wobble!

I'm astounded at the number of people who want to wish Murray ill after he's gone through an operation. No operation is without danger. You really should have more respect. I hope no-one comes up to you as you're lying in your hospital bed recovering from an operation and whispers into your ear that they hope you don't recover.

Those who wish ill of anyone who has just undergone surgery should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm sorry for bringing up their last match Clarky. It is truly hilarious how much this meaningless match annoys you. Your head is just a big bag of cognitive dissonance, with all those mutually exclusive views being held at the same time.

I have made no mention as to what bearing Rafa being bagelled in their last set for just 4 points will have on their future matches. Those extrapolations are all yours and/or The Voices. But that doesn't change the fact that Rafa did get bagelled in a final or the loss of just four points in the last set they played. That was a remarkable event don't you think? I don't recall any other multiple slam winner come within 4 points of losing a golden set in a final. Or maybe Rafa has lost fewer than 4 points whilst being bagelled and it's not really remarkable at all?

andy has been cleaning up in majors with a bad back, so a truckload of majors could be going murrays way from now on..

he even wasted rafa at Tokyo in 2011 before lendl arrived and still destroyed rafa 3-6, 6-2, 6-0..rafa n djokovic are worried.

His tweets sound like he's under the influence of some nice painkillers at the moment lol. Enjoy that post-op goodness Andy!!!

The severity of back surgery is completely underestimated around here. There is a serious chance that Murray will never return to the 100% healthy physical shape he was in prior to the injury/surgery.

I hope he returns better than ever - I know for damn sure that the game needs him.

He will play WTF probably. Keyhole surgery is not bad at all. They said it was "minor."

I'd be surprised if he were back for that. Even if he feels physically recovered, he'd struggle to be back in top form, so would risk demoralising beat downs to end the season.

Hopefully he'll still turn up, and be part of the general razzamatazz of it. It's only up the road from where he lives, and he seems to be good friends with the organiser.

On one hand, it's in London and he probably wants to play badly.

On the other hand, I don't think he'll come back in a tournament in which all matches pit him against top tenners.

He should start with something smaller, like Nadal.

I am no Murray fan but that seriously sucks for him. Really hope he can recover quickly. It is a shame for someone to miss out on something they've worked for their whole life. Best of luck to him.

Well, because all operations are a pretty big deal. It's minor compared to other operations, but major compared to not having an operations at all.

I do expect he'll be back, but with every surgery there's a chance that the player will never be the same.

It seems all too similar to Hewitt's case when he was ranked where Murray was in the world, and missed the French Open due to injury. I hope I am wrong though.

He didn't talk to the press about it at every chance to make sure the world knows about it and the tennis press always mentions 'back injury' while talking about Andy. But it was bad enough for him to get operated. Speaks of his class.

I wonder what the future holds. Murray needed back surgery, Federer is a relative shambles, and Djokovic is mentally owned and generally outclassed now by Nadal.

Have the stars aligned for a Grand Slam year?

I like your optimism but I really don't think Jurgen Melzer is good enough to win the grand slam in 2014.

I thought of the worst case scenario at first, but Murray's operation was performed so smoothly in such a short time frame followed by a quick tweet from Andy. Gave me hope that it was very minor and he would be back soon.

I may be wrong, but I thought Hewitt's injuries were much more severe than Murray's.
