When playing Mixed against a lower rated female I prefer to aim right at the female

But to be honest I struggle hitting right at the girl (unless she's really annoying or something). I've had several mixed team captains (who were all female) get upset with me for not hitting at the girl more.

yep. the captains love the guys that go at the female, as those are the teams that win.

All three of these events are different to me. Singles and doubles are clearly much different. That doesn't even need explaining. However, I am a firm beleiver that mixed and mens doubles are worlds different. In mixed I have to take advantage and be agressive of ever opprotunity I can. In mens I play smart percentage tennis and adjust from there. So I play all different kinds of tennis to work on different parts of my game and to enjoy different aspects.

lol, im not that good

Im over 40, my knee is giving out, im 10lbs overweight

I like mixed as its not easy at all. You need to communicate well to the female, and try and outfox the other team. I find it enjoyable.

My guess is someone got pwned by female on court and has taken it to the keyboard.

I would agree with this statement.

The OP probably has some mommy issue from his childhood. And now he is taking out his frustration with women on the court. A real man would never try to hit a woman on purpose.

I have seen a woman get hit in the eye while playing mixed doubles, the end result was a detached retina.

I believe anyone in a ready position can be targeted.

If someone (any sex) turns away from my shot (concedes the point) I'll aim down & around them. This assumes no previous vendetta.

At higher levels, you know why you were hit...and it's usually you're fault.

Played a 9.5 mixed match tonight. I hit the girl a few times hard and I'm not sorry. I do say I'm sorry to make the team feel better, but actually I'm not at all sorry, as this is proper doubles IMO.

I will always pick on the weaker player, no matter if its a male or female, tonight it just happened to be a female. If I don't hit it hard at the female, and hit it at the other guy, then he will just go at my girl. Usually the team that goes at the other lower rated female the most wins. Watch any pro mixed doubles at the slams and the guys will pick on the female, because its just proper mixed to target the lower skilled player. Nothing macho here, its just proper tennis to target the weaker player. When you only have half the court to go to, its actually best to go right at the person IMO, because he/she has very little room to get off a good shot.

I try to go at the feet if I'm at the net, but if I hit the body, buck up and deal with it.

Call me a jerk and whatever you like, but I play proper doubles.

Just to be clear on this: you're bragging about hitting a tennis ball at a female while playing amateur tennis.

Forget the issue of hitting at an opponent while playing amateur/rec tennis, whether female or male.

The fact that you're bragging about hitting at an opponent on an internet forum is the real issue.

Are you seeking praise for behaving like a coward with poor judgement? Condemnation for potentially inflicting a serious injury on another human being while playing a meaningless game? In either case your behavior off the court here on TT is weird. It's like some psycho who strips naked in Times Square, kills a puppy, smears the blood on his body, and screams, "Look at me everybody! I'm special and need attention"

Your post has nothing to do with tennis. It has everything to do with a need for attention, probably due to an inability to maintain healthy, mature relationships in the real world.

Instead of seeking attention on TT I urge you to seek immediate help from a mental health professional. There's something seriously wrong in taking pride in threatening others with serious harm (the tennis context is meaningless). I strongly suspect that you may have harmed small animals as a teenager too. That would be consistent with a need to feel power over helpless beings, whether a kitten or opponent at net. You need professional help and an internet forum devoted to tennis hardware and NTRP ratings isn't the place to find it.

If you take away the emotion and maybe the "in your face" style of the original post (which I would say invited a predictable response... the OP kind of asked for it), the question simply boils down to:

"Should I hit the shot that is most likely to win the point in competitive play?"

IMO the answer is yes for competitive play... even if it means hitting at the person.

Again, the reason why most teams play with one player at the net is to gain an advantage. The opposing team should be allowed to take away that advantage. If I am playing at the net, I do not expect the other team to try to hit around me. If the other team hits body shots I can't handle, I move back and am very careful about moving up.... Or do some folks here think we should not be hitting with pace at the body even if both players on the opposing teams are at the baseline?

Maybe I'm desensitized from playing other sports. I played Ice Hockey all my life and have dived in front of slap shots and have been hit in places with little or no padding plenty of times. When I was playing baseball and fast pitch, I expected to be thrown at if I was crowding the plate. After getting hit with a frozen puck and a hardball, the fuzzy yellow ball don't seem that bad. I did get hit with an overhead in the groin once and that wasn't fun. I enjoy Tennis a lot (it's my primary recreational sport these days) and it takes a great degree of stamina and mental toughness but physical toughness? Meh... Stand in there kid...

90% of the time yes compared to the male partner

Mostly they are weaker overall, agreed. But any lady who regularly plays mixed at a high level quickly learns to block it back effectively. I have watched with amusement at Wimbledon on the outer courts as a man smashes again and again at the lady. It does not seem to trouble them much.

Maybe your wording made it seem like you wanted to wage war against the female player.

I presume you were trying to say, is it okay to play on the lady if she is weak?

pro women is a completely different bag, as they can handle it. im talking about a 5.0 and below woman, more of a 4.5. Most 4.5 women can be intimidated easily by going at them a few times. This makes them play on the heals vs toes. This can also work with men, but more so with a woman.

Yes I can go over or under her, but going at her early will take away her ability to do what doubles players do best, finish at the net.

Whining that you're under personal attack on an internet forum while bragging about violent attacks on women is pathetic.

Using the threat of physical violence during a game of tennis is no different from using a threat of physical violence during a board game. In both instances there is nothing to be materially gained by the act of violence. How many girls or women have you assaulted during a game of Monopoly? How many women have you deliberately injured while playing rec tennis? (Yes, that's rec tennis, league play or not, it's still freakin' rec tennis, not the finals at Wimbledon).

You're no different than some psycho who randomly assaults women on the subway. The question remains: why are you proud of that? Why are you proud of attacks against women in the context of a tennis match? Most men would brag about being in an even fight against another man in a boxing match, or martial arts sparing session, or even a bar fight. You're bragging about violence against a woman wearing tennis skirt while playing a recreational game.

Are you this guy?

http://www.krqe.com/news/crime/man-accused-of-dozens-of-random-attacks

"ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An Albuquerque man accused of hurting many people may finally be stopped.

Police say Turan Johnson, 39, has attacked people for no reason again and again and again, but he's never been sentenced to jail for it.

Now, he's learning not to mess with the mailman.

Johnson has assault and battery charges dating back to 2004, and in every case except one the charges were dismissed, sometimes because of concerns over his mental health.

But now Johnson's accused of hitting a postal worker, a federal employee, which could come with a hefty punishment.

Court records suggest Johnson may have a problem with trespassing and breaking things, but he also has a slew of assault and battery charges.

Despite a stack of court records on him, with victims detailing—in some cases—brutal, random attacks, Johnson's had every case dismissed except one.

Just last year, police say Johnson was at Kim Long Asian Food restaurant in Northeast Albuquerque when he asked a man if he was Arab and then punched him so hard he gave the man a mild concussion.

KRQE was there in 2007 when Johnson appeared in court after more than a dozen UNM students said Johnson punched or kicked them.

"An Indian man threatened (inaudible) now I want 12 Chinese girlfriends," Johnson told the judge.

It is strange comments like that victims describe Johnson making during his alleged attacks.

In two cases, Johnson was found not competent for trial although in 2010, he was tried and convicted of aggravated battery and setting a room on fire at a Northwest Albuquerque group home.

Johnson struck a plea deal and was back on the streets with just probation.

A postal worker says he was delivering mail to a massage business in the heights when he came upon Johnson harassing a worker out front.

The mail carrier asked Johnson to stop, so Johnson beat him up.

Now, he's charged with assaulting and impeding a federal employee.

The postal worker told KRQE News 13 he is going to be fine and that he is more concerned with his accused attacker getting mental help.

Because Johnson was mentally incompetent and because all those past battery charges were misdemeanors, prosecutors had to cut him free under state law.

Johnson is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after those findings of incompetency and his behavior Monday in court, but there will be no free pass with federal assault charges."

All the women I played mixed doubles with accept that the other team (women and men both) will hit at and go after the weaker player (women or men).

I don't care how hard a person hits a tennis ball at me in competitive play. It's up to me to hit it back or avoid it. It doesn't bother me as nearly as much as poor etiquette, bad line calls... and BTW... I'm bothered when an opponent not giving their A-game or taking it easy.

Tend to agree, I don't mind getting thrashed. It gives you something to think about to improve your game and aim for. But bad manners or etiquette really annoy me.

But just so I understand, you're of the opinion that in tennis if somebody is at the net, you can't hit it at them? You always have to go around them?

Nothing wrong with this at all.

Agreed. It's a fairly high level doubles match, not date night.

In tennis, when you play to win, you identify the weakest link and then exploit it. The other teams is trying to do the same.

To me it's more than that. When somebody is at the net that shouldn't force me to hit around them. They don't get to decide where I can hit. If they chose to be at the net then they have accepted the risk of being hit. It's that simple. If you don't want to accept that risk, stay at the baseline.

I sometimes play with my father who is 70 and against certain people he won't play at the net because they hit too hard. So he stays at the baseline.

And hitting somebody on purpose simply to hit them is messed up (ie if they turn their back and you hit them with an overhead) but if your best shot is directly at the person and they happen to get hit, then that's how it works out.

Well said. My goal is to go right at the body as that makes the volley much tougher IMO, in no way do I want to hurt anyone. It seems 4.5 ladies turn away after I hit the ball so they in turn get hit. If they stood their ground and faced the ball with the right racquet ready position they would at least get a racquet on the ball vs getting hit in the arm.

I don't always play mixed doubles, but when I do...

I aim for the weaker player!!

I like to yell "yea baby that's what I'm talking about" and pump my fist after I hit the woman in mixed. If they complain, I use the old Lendl line "I did not ask you to come to the net".

Kidding aside, I don't try to hit people and don't enjoy hitting people but I will direct shots at the weaker (usually female but not always) player in mixed. If I do hit them, I do apologize. When possible I direct the shot down but if at the baseline, I will hit a hard topspin shot at them. My intent and thought process is not "I am going to hit them" but rather hit the hard topspin shot to the weaker volley.

My right ankle is scar tissue and bone fragments from football. My left knee has little cartilage remaining from martial arts and running. I lost my front teeth in a horrific baseball accident. And in every case I fully accepted the risk and the injuries were incurred in the normal course of play. I've even been hit in the throat with a ball while at the net.

There's a difference between deliberately trying to drill an opponent at net with a hard shot and simply jamming him or her with a close shot or one at the feet.

Most importantly, the comparison to a board game is EXTREMELY appropriate as far as risk/reward is concerned. No rec player should expect to be deliberately drilled in the face by a hard shot while at net.

We're not playing in order to pay the mortgage and feed our kids. There's no more riding on a rec league tennis match than what's riding on a game of monopoly with the kids: nothing. If you think otherwise then you're suffering from delusions of grandeur. Top ATP and WTA players can't fill stadiums at big events, often even in quarter and semi-final rounds. If you think anyone cares about a 9.5 mixed doubles match you're through the looking glass.

I don't know why you were compelled to post this, but it only makes sense to exploit whoever you think is the weakest link of a team. Going out of your way to try to hit somebody is still a jerk move.

It might be a jerk move to some to hit through a person instead of around them, and a valid move to others.

I will say I try and hit to the feet a good %, but sometimes this is not possible in a fast heated point.

IMO its easier for someone to get a lucky pickup at the feet reply vs one at the body.

Seems like you're backing off your OP. There you said that you deliberately hit HARD at the female net player, all just to earn one extra point in a rec match. The harder one hits, the less accurate one is, thereby increasing the probability of injuring your "target".

That's not being a jerk. It's being immature and irresponsible since, in the event that she takes your hard shot in the face, at best you'd gain one stupid point in an utterly meaningless GAME while she could end up losing a tooth or even an eye.

Hmmm, Gut4Tennis gains a single point in a meaningless game versus a woman potentially losing an eye....sure, that risk-reward equation makes sense...to a 12-year old with no parental leadership.

I have an idea: post a YouTube video of yourself smashing tennis balls at a woman standing about 12 feet from you. You see, the context is irrelevant since the tennis match is meaningless. It doesn't matter whether you do it on a court or to some poor random victim on the street. The risk-reward equation is the same: whether or not your target suffers a serious injury you still receive nothing of material value. The flaw in your thinking is that putting the female player at risk by hitting hard at her results in something worthwhile. I can assure you, it does not.
