The best wood player ever is really only a 3 way race between Gonzales, Laver, and Rosewall IMO. Best carpet though is between those three, and McEnroe, Lendl, Sampras, and Becker all having a good case too. Much harder decision than the best wood player is.

Peak for Peak, I think Sampras was would eat everyone for lunch in history indoors (hard or carpet)
Hell, Just watching those '07 exos with Federer made me forget what kind of a BEAST Sampras really was on those fast indoor courts. I still haven't see anyone with that kind of aggression and strike first mentality to that same degree mixed with the mental toughness and pace of shots on medium-fast courts

Lendl (7 indoor majors), Sampras (7 indoor majors) and McEnroe (8 indoor majors) are the most accomplished in the open era. becker is at a level below them in terms of accomplishment.
Becker was great on indoor carpet - yes. But not sure why people keep listing him up with Lendl and McEnroe who had obviously superior records on that surface.
Of Sampras' 7 great indoor titles (5 WTF's and 2 Grand Slam Cups) - the 2 Grand Slam Cups and 3 his WTF's (1991 & 1993 Frankfurt & 1996 Hanover) were on carpet. He also won important indoor carpet events like Philadelphia (4 times in that event).

McEnroe has the best winning percentage and won the most titles, including the most important ones. He is followed by Lendl, Borg, Connors, Becker, Ashe and Sampras.
Edit: Gonzales, Laver and Rosewall are deserved by these stats because they concern the open era only. Laver is eight of the list, just behind Sampras, on the sole basis of his open era years.

Nastase won 4 Masters indoors.Smith won a Masters, a WCT title and lost two Masters finals; a similar record to that of Ashe, BTW.

Let´s not forget Nastase, a Masters recordholder with 4 successive titles.In fact, he only lost a Masters final and that was the only one he didn´t play indoors ( grass ).

In which universe is this true? Federer has campaigned for faster surfaces, not slower ones. Players and journalists agree that he would benefit if the courts were made faster. See the comments by Andy Murray and Peter Bodo after Federer won Dubai in 2012 on an unusually fast court.

Fed whined to ATP about carpet - too fast. It was banned.
He has no chance against good carpet players. Indoors he has no chance anymore against Nadal.
Fed is good on medium to slow surfaces as the base line player he is.
And i am happy i could not watch Fedal against Becker or Sampras on carpet.
They would have slaughter both, taking their time away.

I'm not especially interested in hypothetical matchups, since they do little more than offer fanboys an opportunity to indulge their prejudices. Can you provide any evidence to support your claim that Federer complained about playing on carpet and that this is the reason why the surface has virtually disappeared from ATP tour events?
